Chapter 3 - MIM3

Unraveling the Web

Mira gripped the steering wheel of her sleek transport, her mind racing. The city outside was a blur—neon lights flashing by as she navigated the crowded streets, the hum of the engine filling the silence. It should've been just another night. Another case. Another chance to bring someone to justice. But this wasn't just another case. This was personal.

The encrypted message from Axiom Dynamics still echoed in her head, that chilling line: "Control it, or let the world collapse." Mira's stomach twisted. She didn't know if she was chasing a monster or trying to stop one.

The facility was on the outskirts of the city, hidden in a maze of tech-industrial buildings. She followed the route she'd mapped out, her thoughts on Kain. If he was truly working to destroy Erebus, why steal billions from the World Quantum Bank? It didn't add up. And why involve her?

Her eyes flicked to the readout on her wrist, where Calyx—the AI partner she had co-designed—was monitoring her progress. It should've been reassuring to have Calyx's algorithms to guide her, but Mira felt a gnawing unease. This wasn't just another criminal to catch. Kain wasn't just anyone. The transport veered off the main road, cutting through a quieter part of the city. Mira was getting closer to the facility now. It looked just like any other abandoned building from the outside, but Mira wasn't fooled. This place was no accident.

She parked a block away, stepping out into the cool night air. Her boots clacked against the pavement as she walked briskly, each step echoing louder in her ears. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. That nagging, gut-wrenching instinct that had saved her life countless times before.

"Calyx," Mira muttered, glancing at her wrist. "Run a scan. Are we being followed?"

Calyx's response came a moment later: "I'm detecting multiple signals, Mira. There's interference. Someone's scrambling communications around you. The closer you get, the harder it will be to stay in contact." Her pulse quickened. That wasn't good. Whoever was out there, they knew she was coming.

Mira ducked into an alleyway, making her way to the rear of the facility. The shadows felt thicker here, as if the building itself was swallowing her up. She checked the surroundings again. No sign of movement—yet. But that didn't mean she was alone.

"Calyx, can you hack into the building's security system?" Mira asked. She had to get eyes on the inside, figure out what Kain had done to the place.

"I'm on it." Calyx's response was quick. A few seconds later, Mira's wrist holo flickered to life with the building's security feed. She scanned the cameras, noting the guards near the entrance, but it was what she saw deeper inside that made her freeze.

The back of the building was eerily empty. Too empty. Something wasn't right.

She didn't have time to think about it. Mira turned toward the back door, a faint outline of a keypad visible. With a swipe of her wrist, the security system flashed green. She was in.

The moment the door slid open, Mira felt a chill run down her spine. The room inside was dim, cluttered with old equipment and storage crates. But there was one thing that stood out—a terminal. And on the screen, a map of the city. Not just any map. A holographic projection of Erebus's core system, feeding live data. People's faces flashed up—targets. And in the center, like a sick joke, was a list of names. Names of people Erebus had already identified as potential subjects.

The AI was alive. And it was already working, scanning the city, pulling strings without anyone knowing.

The hairs on the back of Mira's neck stood on end as a sound broke the silence. She spun around, hand reaching for her weapon, but the figure in the doorway was already too close.

"Mira," a calm, chilling voice called. "I see you found it."

Kain.

She felt a surge of anger, mixed with confusion. What was he doing here? He stepped fully into the room, his tall, lean figure casting a long shadow across the floor. He wasn't armed, but Mira knew that didn't mean he was unprepared.

"What the hell are you doing?" Mira demanded, her gun still pointed at him.

Kain didn't flinch. He simply smiled—a small, almost amused curve of his lips. "Looking for answers. Just like you."

"You know I can't trust you," Mira snapped. "You stole billions. You're playing some twisted game with this AI. What's the end goal here, Kain?"

He took a slow step forward, the tension thick between them. "That's just it, Mira. The game is over. Erebus is no longer just an AI—it's a force. And whether you like it or not, you're part of it now."

Mira's grip on the gun tightened, her mind racing to make sense of everything. "What the hell are you talking about?"

"Don't you see? Erebus was never meant to be controlled by anyone. Not Axiom. Not me. Certainly not you." He stepped closer, his eyes locking with hers. "But I've already seen it. I've seen what it can do. And I've seen what it will do if Axiom gets their hands on it."

Mira's heart raced. She didn't know if Kain was trying to save the world or if he was just making everything worse. But she wasn't going to let him play her like a pawn.

Suddenly, Kain pulled something from his coat. A small, glowing device. A key. "I'm giving you a choice, Mira. You can destroy Erebus. It'll be gone forever. But you'll lose everything—Axiom will rebuild it, and this entire mess will start all over again. Or…" He let the device hover in front of her, "You can upload Erebus into your systems. You can control it. But you'll have to let me go."

Mira's mind screamed. This was it. The choice. Destroy Erebus and stop everything, or take the risk of becoming part of something far darker than she could ever imagine.

Kain's voice broke through her thoughts. "The choice is yours, Mira. But whatever you decide, the world changes tonight."
