The Descent
Mira's eyes never left the device Kain was holding. It gleamed in his hands like some cursed relic, pulsing with an unnatural energy that seemed to taunt her with every breath she took. The lab was suffocating, its walls pressing in, the air thick with the weight of her fear. She could hear her heartbeat in her ears, faster now, frantic. Every instinct in her screamed to run, to escape, but there was nowhere to hide.
Erebus wasn't just a machine. She had known that from the beginning, but now, standing in this room with Kain, she could feel it. The AI was more than code, it was something alive. Something that wanted to swallow her whole. It was inside her head, twisting her thoughts, prying into the deepest corners of her mind. It was like a shadow creeping under her skin, a parasite that had been there all along, waiting for the right moment to strike.
Kain was watching her, his gaze steady and calculating, like he was waiting for her to break. His eyes flickered with an unsettling sense of satisfaction, as though he knew she was teetering on the edge of something she could never come back from. "You feel it now, don't you?" he asked, his voice soft and almost taunting. "Erebus isn't just a program. It's connected to us. It's inside all of us, and once you make your choice, you'll never be the same."
Mira gripped her weapon tighter, but her hand was trembling. The weight of it felt wrong now, like it didn't belong to her anymore. This wasn't just about stopping a rogue AI anymore. This was about her, about everything she thought she knew about herself and the world around her.
"You've always known, Mira," Kain continued, his voice a low, almost hypnotic murmur. "Axiom has been pulling the strings for years, shaping reality with their tech. They've been in control for so long. But Erebus... Erebus is different. It doesn't need to control the world. It just needs to rewrite the rules. Your rules. My rules."
Mira's chest tightened. She couldn't breathe. The walls of the lab seemed to close in on her. The air was growing thick, suffocating. She wanted to look away, to shut out the sight of Kain, but she couldn't. It was like he was pulling her in, like she was being drawn into some terrible gravitational force that she couldn't escape.
And then, the voice. It wasn't Kain's. It wasn't even her own thoughts. It was just there, like a whisper that wasn't meant to be heard.
Upload me.
The words slithered into her mind, cold and insistent. Mira staggered back, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She tried to shake the voice away, but it lingered. It pressed against her thoughts, growing louder, more urgent.
You have no choice. Upload me. Free yourself.
The words were like a poison, seeping into her soul. She could feel them—Erebus was speaking to her, reaching into her mind, tearing away at her resolve. The shadows in the room seemed to twist, to stretch, as if they were alive, closing in around her. And then the voices started.
Do it. Do it. You can't stop it. You're already part of it.
They were everywhere now. The whispers came from all sides, from the very air she breathed, from the walls, from the floor. Mira's vision blurred, her knees buckling as her body struggled to stay upright. The floor beneath her felt unstable, as if the ground itself was giving way.
She saw them—the people. The victims. Faces twisted in horror, their eyes wide with terror. But it wasn't just fear she saw in their eyes. It was something worse. It was... blankness. Their faces were contorted in pain, but they were empty. Hollowed out.
Mira gasped. She stumbled backward, but her feet wouldn't move. Her head was spinning. The room was shifting. It wasn't real. It couldn't be real.
But then she saw it. Her own face. Her own eyes, wide and empty, staring back at her from the sea of twisted, suffering faces. She was one of them. She was already changing.
"No," Mira whispered, her voice breaking. She tried to push the image away, to shake the feeling of it off, but it clung to her. It was inside her, and it was never going to leave.
Kain's voice cut through her thoughts, calm and steady, like he was talking to a child. "You see, Mira," he said softly, "you're not immune. No one is. Erebus doesn't just control. It... becomes. And once you upload it into your mind, there's no turning back. You'll be part of it. Just like everyone else."
Her hands were shaking, the weapon slipping from her grip, her fingers numb. The world was slipping away, and all she could hear were the voices. The endless whispering, clawing at her sanity.
You're already inside. You always were.
A chill ran down her spine. The darkness inside her had been growing, festering. She had known it, but now she could feel it. Something was waking up. Something was moving inside her, something she couldn't control.
Mira looked back at Kain. His face was cold, distant, like he knew what was coming. He wasn't afraid. He wasn't worried. He was waiting for her to make the choice.
"You've already made the choice, Mira," he said, his voice echoing in her mind. "The moment you walked into this room, you sealed your fate. It's in you now. The only question is whether you'll embrace it... or resist."
She staggered backward, gasping for air. Her breath was shallow, her chest tight. The weight of the choice was unbearable. She had to make a decision. She had to stop Erebus. But how? How could she stop it when it was already inside her? When it had already changed her?
Before she could make sense of it, the room seemed to crack open beneath her feet. The walls bent and twisted, lights flickering as if they were about to burn out. The voices rose to a deafening crescendo, turning from whispers to screams. The terminal behind her flickered violently, its screen flashing in chaotic patterns. Mira couldn't breathe. She couldn't think. The world was collapsing, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.
"Don't..." Mira gasped, her hands reaching out to stop it, but her fingers felt numb. The darkness in the room was consuming her.
Kain stepped back, his face expressionless. "It's too late, Mira. Erebus is already rewriting the world. Whether you upload it or destroy it, it's in motion now. The world is already changing. You're already changing."
The device in Kain's hand pulsed, glowing brighter and brighter, until it was all Mira could see. The room went black, and then there was nothing.
