For a moment, Andrei simply stared down at her, contemplating whether to disobey his boss's orders or give Adeline the space she wanted. Taking a step back, he gave her a small nod. "Very well."
"Good," Adeline replied. She turned on her heel and resumed walking down the hallway.
"May I at least know where you're going, Miss Adeline?" Andrei's voice echoed behind her.
Without turning back, she waved a dismissive hand. "I'm just bored and looking for something to do," she said over her shoulder, quickening her pace.
As she wandered down the corridor, her eyes scanned the doors lining the walls. Most led to rooms she had no interest in—guest rooms, storage, and some office space. But one door at the end of the hallway caught her attention. She hadn't stepped inside of it before. It looked older, almost forgotten, with its handle slightly tarnished.
