Beyond the jurisdiction of the NCPD, the Badlands felt like an entirely different world—a place where the rules of Night City didn't apply.

The Badlands were infamous for their lawlessness. Crime in this vast wasteland rarely saw intervention.

NCPD's reconnaissance infantry was technically stationed in the area, but their involvement was sparse, reserved for the rare cases that escalated beyond control.

Most of the time, the Badlands were left to the Nomads—wandering clans that roamed the outskirts, living off theft and highway robbery.

Even NCPD knew better than to provoke the larger Nomad families; the cost of dealing with them outweighed the potential gain.

As Ethan sat in the passenger seat, his mind wandered over these very details—details he had once seen in the game's codex, now vividly playing out before him.

But his thoughts were interrupted by the sharp blare of horns and the unmistakable crack of gunfire.

Through the side mirror, Ethan spotted a convoy of Nomad raiders in lightly armored off-road vehicles barreling down the highway toward them. The Nomads leaned out of their windows, sand-colored Copperhead rifles in hand, firing wildly at Ethan and Jackie's taxi.

"Shit! We're being hit by a pack of raiding bastards!" Jackie yelled, smashing the car window with his gunstock.

Without hesitation, he leaned out, dual Chaos pistols in hand, and returned fire. The staccato burst of Jackie's shots filled the air, momentarily suppressing their pursuers.

Ethan, meanwhile, let out a dry laugh at the irony of the situation. Just moments ago, he had been mulling over the Badlands' dangers, and now, here they were—a prime example of its brutality unfolding in real-time.

But the absurdity escalated when the taxi driver panicked.

Instead of speeding up, the man slammed on the brakes. The vehicle screeched to a halt, lurching forward violently. Before either Ethan or Jackie could react, the driver flung his door open and bolted for the nearby shrubbery.

"Idiot!" Jackie shouted, but his words were wasted. The driver barely made it a few steps before a hailstorm of bullets from the raiders turned him into a gory mess.

The abrupt stop had also sent Jackie tumbling out of the car, his body crashing into a crumbling roadside barrier.

"Fucking hell! Why'd you brake, you goddamn coward?!" Jackie roared as he clambered to his feet, limping toward a nearby rock for cover.

Ethan stepped out of the car with a calm that contrasted sharply with the chaos around him. He turned to face the oncoming Nomad convoy, his golden eyes glinting like steel in the sun.

"You city rats!" one of the Nomads hollered from his speeding vehicle. "Time to pay the toll!"

"Drop your guns, and maybe we'll leave you with enough body parts to bury!" another sneered, firing a warning shot at the wrecked car.

"Don't bother running!" a third added. "This is the Badlands, choom! No NCPD to save your sorry asses out here!"

Jackie ducked behind cover, frustration boiling over as he loaded a fresh magazine into his pistols. "Ethan, get the hell out of here, mano! I'll hold these bastards off while you make a run for it!"

His voice carried a certainty that struck Ethan. Jackie wasn't just saying it—he meant every word. He was ready to lay down his life for Ethan's escape.

For a moment, Ethan felt a pang of emotion. In another life, he might have been forced to make a choice—run and survive, or stay and die alongside Jackie.

But that was before.

Now, Ethan was far from powerless. He wouldn't run, and he wouldn't die. He would end this.

Stepping forward, Ethan extended his arms, the alloy blades hidden within his forearms snapping into place with a sharp metallic hiss.

"Jackie… you're like a brother. Don't worry, I won't let you die out here in this godforsaken wasteland! You were with me at my lowest." Ethan's voice carried unwavering determination as he flashed a genuine smile at Jackie. "We made a promise, didn't we? To become legends of Night City—together!"

Jackie froze, stunned by the sheer sincerity of Ethan's words, but before he could respond, Ethan stepped forward. Without hesitation, he walked straight into the oncoming storm of bullets and roaring engines, his figure standing firm amidst the chaos.

"Ethan, are you out of your damn mind?! Get back here! We can't both die like this!" Jackie shouted, his voice hoarse with desperation. Gritting his teeth, he abandoned his cover and charged forward, determined to drag Ethan out of harm's way.

But Ethan wasn't planning to die.

Raising his right arm, he decided it was time to unleash something far beyond what these raiders could handle. Energy from the core reactor in his chest surged into his arm, its heat distorting the air around him. The ground beneath Ethan's feet cracked and hissed as the immense power built within his palm.

A second later, the world around him lit up.

The Incineration Cannon roared to life, releasing a torrent of searing, golden energy. It surged forward like a miniature sun, a devastating wave of heat and destruction.

The blast expanded outward, a blazing vortex that annihilated everything in its path. Vehicles, raiders, even the ground itself—all reduced to ash and rubble.

When the blinding light finally faded, a three-hundred-meter-long crater stretched before Ethan. The earth had been scorched to its core, leaving a deep, cone-shaped scar on the land. Nothing remained of the attackers except for the faint smell of charred metal and ozone.

This wasn't just destruction—it was absolute erasure.

Jackie, crouched near a shattered piece of railing, could only stare. His mouth hung open, his mind blank as he struggled to process what had just happened.

"Jackie? Hey! Don't tell me you're actually scared stiff!" Ethan turned, his calm demeanor offset by the hint of amusement in his voice.

When Jackie didn't respond, Ethan strode over and gave him a light slap on the cheek—or at least as light as Ethan could manage.

"Snap out of it, big guy," Ethan said with a smirk.
