When Jackie didn't respond, Ethan strode over and gave him a light slap on the cheek—or at least as light as Ethan could manage.

"Snap out of it, big guy," Ethan said with a smirk.

The "light slap" sent Jackie sprawling onto the dirt, but at least it worked. Blinking rapidly, Jackie scrambled upright, his chest heaving as he sucked in lungfuls of air.

"What the hell was that, Ethan?!" he finally managed to croak, pointing a shaky finger at the massive crater. "Did you just throw a nuclear bomb at them?!"

Ethan chuckled, unable to resist teasing. "Yeah, you could say that."

Jackie stared at him for another second before shaking his head, a mix of awe and disbelief plastered on his face. "Dios mío… you're insane, mano."

Fifteen minutes later, the two sat in a new ride they'd commandeered, the previous chaos now behind them. Jackie, seated in the passenger seat, had finally regained his composure, though the lingering amazement was evident in his voice.

"Seriously, Ethan. I thought I was gonna piss myself back there. But man, that chrome of yours is something else. If you hit Arasaka Tower with that, I swear, the whole thing would come crashing down!"

Jackie's excitement was infectious, his tone equal parts admiration and pride. His best friend wasn't just strong—he was a walking weapon.

Ethan, however, was more pragmatic. Hands gripping the steering wheel, he replied matter-of-factly, "That blast was no joke, sure. But it drained about a third of my reactor's energy. It's not something I can use recklessly."

There was no exaggeration in Ethan's tone. Even now, he could feel the faint emptiness in his core, like a deep hunger that hadn't been fully sated. The reactor in his chest was already working to replenish its energy, but the process was slow.

Jackie whistled low, leaning back in his seat. "So that's the catch, huh? Still, it's one hell of an ace up your sleeve."

Ethan nodded, his golden eyes focused on the road ahead. "Yeah. It's powerful, but it's not infinite. Gotta use it wisely."

As the barren landscape of the Badlands stretched out before them, Jackie let out a hearty laugh. "Choom, with firepower like that, we're gonna rewrite Night City's history. Just don't forget to give me a heads-up next time you decide to nuke a bunch of raiders, alright?"

A faint smile tugged at Ethan's lips. "Sure thing, Jackie."

…..

Ethan leaned back in his chair, his fingers idly shuffling the worn deck of cards as he glanced toward Jackie, who was equally restless. The two of them sat in the dim, musty confines of an abandoned farmhouse deep in the Badlands, their current mission hanging precariously in limbo.

Ethan's mind wandered, replaying the events of earlier in the day. The crater he'd created with his Incineration Cannon was undoubtedly causing ripples across Night City and its sprawling corporate networks. He could imagine the suits in Arasaka Tower and Militech headquarters scrambling to figure out what the hell had caused such devastation. It was almost amusing to think that his single, unintentional act had likely sparked a wave of paranoia across the city.

But as much as Ethan might have been tempted to bask in the chaos he'd unintentionally sown, the hollow emptiness that had followed the cannon's activation kept his thoughts grounded. His chest reactor was still recharging, and the gnawing void within him had only just begun to recede.

"I've got a long way to go before I can take on the corpos," Ethan thought, his eyes narrowing. His current limitations were a sobering reminder that even with his abilities, he wasn't invincible. A prolonged fight against an entire corporate army or one of their war machines would almost certainly end in his defeat.

Jackie's voice broke through Ethan's thoughts. "Mano, seriously, you gotta chill with that big-ass cannon of yours. If you go setting off another one of those nukes in the city, you'll blow up more than a street. We're talking entire districts—gone."

Ethan nodded, acknowledging Jackie's concern. "You're right. It's not something I can use carelessly. Besides, the fallout from earlier is probably already causing headaches for the corpos."

Jackie snorted. "Headaches? They're probably shitting their pants right now. I mean, did you see the size of that crater? If I didn't know better, I'd think someone was trying to start a war out here."

Unbeknownst to either of them, Jackie's words weren't far from the truth.

Back at the scene of the explosion, NCPD reconnaissance teams and representatives from Night City's major corporations were already combing through the area. Surveillance drones buzzed overhead, and corporate operatives in tactical gear scoured the perimeter.

The scale of destruction had everyone on edge. Speculation ran rampant—was this the work of a rogue Militech unit? A Nomad uprising? Or perhaps something far worse?

The chaos that Ethan had left behind was quickly being framed as the prelude to a full-scale invasion. Corporate boardrooms across the city were filled with heated debates and hasty crisis management strategies.

Deep within the Badlands.

Inside an abandoned farmhouse, Ethan and Jack were killing time by playing cards, waiting for V's arrival.

Suddenly, Ethan recalled something from the plot of Cyberpunk 2077. In the game's Nomad storyline, Jack had already retrieved the cargo and was waiting here alone for V. But according to the information Ethan had received from the fixer, V would be the one transporting the cargo this time. Ethan and Jack's job was to protect the cargo and escort it to the border, where they would enter Night City together with V to deliver the goods.

Although this deviated slightly from the original plot, it wasn't too far off.

However, after waiting for almost two hours—far past the agreed time—V still hadn't arrived.

Ethan and Jack began to suspect that something troublesome might have happened on V's end. They decided to send someone to investigate and see if they could locate V.
