For a moment, Rebecca and Pilar exchanged glances, their instincts telling them to put as much distance as possible between themselves and this newly "dangerous" individual.

But the tension evaporated when Ethan's expression softened, a faint smile replacing his cold demeanor.

The oppressive aura that had surrounded him moments ago was gone, leaving behind an almost comforting presence.

Rebecca blinked, processing the shift, before breaking into her usual brash grin. Without hesitation, she swaggered toward Ethan, her bold personality quickly resurfacing.

Slapping a hand on his shoulder, she laughed as if they were old friends. "Hey, kid! Thanks for saving us back there. Drinks are on me, yeah? Let's hit a bar!"

"Rebecca, what the hell are you doing?!" Pilar hissed, his voice laced with disbelief.

Pilar's expression shifted to one of exaggerated seriousness as he walked over, pulling Rebecca aside. But the moment he turned to Ethan, his face morphed into a sly grin.

Clapping Ethan on the shoulder, Pilar exclaimed, "Whoa, man! That cyberware of yours is insane! How'd you pull that off? That blast you fired earlier—hell, not even Adam Smasher could've walked away from that, right?"

Ethan met the praise with a faint smile, his demeanor calm as he replied, "Who knows? Maybe it could kill Adam Smasher. I'll have to find an opportunity to test it out."

Seeing Ethan's relaxed attitude, Pilar and Rebecca visibly let their guard down. Their earlier caution melted away, replaced by casual chatter.

Within minutes, the trio was laughing and exchanging contact information like old comrades.

A few moments later, the roar of a high-speed vehicle echoed through the alley. A sleek black armored van skidded to a stop near Rebecca's home, and three heavily armed figures quickly disembarked, moving with precision toward the source of Pilar's distress signal.

The newcomers were none other than Maine, Dorio, and Kiwi.

Maine hefted a Crusher shotgun, its massive barrel gleaming under the streetlights, while Dorio carried a Defender heavy machine gun, her imposing frame radiating power.

Kiwi, meanwhile, moved with a practiced stealth, taking cover as she scanned the area for potential threats, ready to launch a hacking assault at a moment's notice.

Their expressions were grim, prepared for the worst as they approached the alley.

But what greeted them left them stunned.

Instead of a desperate firefight or bodies scattered across the ground, they saw Pilar, Rebecca, and Ethan walking out of the alley, arms slung around each other's shoulders like old friends.

The trio's carefree demeanor couldn't have been further from the life-or-death situation Maine's team had anticipated.

Maine's brows furrowed in irritation as he stomped toward Pilar, his voice low and gruff. "Pilar, you better have a damn good explanation for dragging us out here in the middle of the night."

Sensing Maine's foul mood, Pilar quickly launched into a detailed recount of the events that had just transpired.

As Maine, Dorio, and Kiwi listened, their expressions shifted. Shock, disbelief, and a hint of skepticism danced across their faces as Pilar described how Ethan had not only miraculously recovered from his injuries but also obliterated an overhauled cybernetic enforcer with a single, devastating energy blast.

Internally, Ethan couldn't help but marvel at the speed of Maine's response. "They're faster than I expected," he thought, his gaze settling on the trio.

Meanwhile, a heated argument broke out between Maine, Dorio, Pilar, and Rebecca. Maine questioned whether Pilar and Rebecca were drunk or hallucinating, while Dorio openly doubted the possibility of such power existing.

Kiwi, having determined there was no immediate danger, let out a resigned sigh and lit a cigarette. She leaned casually against a nearby wall, her sharp gaze occasionally flicking toward Ethan.

As the debate continued, Ethan activated his life-detection abilities, scanning the surrounding area out of instinct.

To his surprise, a familiar figure appeared on his radar—a presence that sent a jolt through his chest.

Perched silently on the rooftop of a factory several hundred meters away was a strikingly familiar silhouette.

Her short white hair shimmered with a rainbow gradient under the moonlight, her violet-red eyes framed by delicate crimson eye makeup.

The soft light of the full moon highlighted her pale complexion and ethereal beauty, making her appear almost otherworldly.

Lucy.

Dressed in her signature cropped white jacket over a black sleeveless bodysuit, paired with white shorts and gray thigh-high socks tucked into black knee-high boots, she stood motionless, her gaze fixed on the scene below.

The sight of her under the moonlit sky left Ethan momentarily breathless. His heart, so recently replaced by machinery, felt like it skipped a beat.

But before he could dwell on the feeling, Rebecca grabbed his arm and tugged him toward the nearby building.

"Stop standing around like a statue. You're coming with me! We're getting a drink!" Rebecca declared, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Ethan offered no resistance, letting her lead him inside.

As they disappeared into the building, Pilar paused mid-argument with Maine and Dorio, turning to watch Ethan leave. Maine's sharp eyes narrowed, a calculating gleam replacing his earlier irritation.

"If that kid is as strong as you say, we can't let him slip through our fingers," Maine said in a low voice. "Recruiting him to the crew would be ideal. If not, we'd better at least stay on his good side."

"But I'm not taking your word for it, Pilar. I need to see what this kid can actually do."

Dorio nodded in agreement, her tone pragmatic as she suggested, "How about we take him along for that job with the Maelstrom? That should be enough to see if he's the real deal."
