"Hmph, that depends on whether Ethan is even willing. A mission like that is way beneath him," Pilar scoffed, his confidence in Ethan's power unshakable after witnessing the one-sided destruction of Murakami.
Maine leaned back slightly, his tone steady as he replied, "Regardless, I need to see his abilities for myself before making any decisions."
Inside Rebecca's home, she was busy clearing the clutter from the sofa, tossing random items haphazardly against the wall. From the fridge, she hauled out half a crate of vodka and a full case of beer.
Rebecca tossed Ethan a cold beer, her movements nonchalant. "Here, have one," she said, before grabbing her own and dropping onto the sofa across from him.
Ethan caught the bottle, feeling its icy chill against his hand. Without hesitation, he cracked it open and took a long swig, savoring the bitterness.
"Man, this feels good," he sighed. A wry smile crept onto his face as he added, "Didn't think I'd live long enough to enjoy another beer."
Rebecca tilted her head, watching him curiously. She mirrored his action, downing her beer in one go before tossing the empty bottle into a nearby trash can. "So, Ethan," she started, leaning back and folding her arms.
"I'm not gonna ask how you pulled off that insane comeback or how you turned into a walking tank." She gestured at him with a faint smirk. "But I do want to know—how the hell did you know my name? Don't think I've ever seen you around here before."
Her blunt question didn't faze Ethan. He rested the empty bottle on the table, his gaze softening. "I've known you for a long time," he said, his voice steady and calm.
Rebecca frowned slightly. "That makes no damn sense. We've never met."
"I know," Ethan admitted with a faint smile.
Rebecca froze for a moment, her sharp eyes narrowing as a flush spread across her cheeks. She quickly masked it with a scowl, standing abruptly.
"Pfft, what kind of cheesy crap is that 'I Know'?" she shot back, grabbing another beer from the table and chugging it down.
Slamming the empty bottle onto the counter, she pointed at Ethan with a defiant look. "Stop dodging the question! How the hell do you know my name?"
Ethan didn't answer, his calm smile still in place. Rebecca glared at him, her frustration bubbling over. After a moment, she let out an exaggerated groan and flopped back onto the sofa, arms crossed.
"Fine. Don't tell me," she grumbled, her tone softer now. "But… I gues…." Before she could say anything more…
The door opened, and the team made themselves at home immediately. Maine, Dorio, and Kiwi raided the fridge for drinks without hesitation, each taking a seat wherever they could. Maine dragged a chair over, positioning himself directly across from Ethan.
Lighting a cigar, he leaned forward, his sharp eyes locking onto Ethan. "Ethan, my man," Maine began, his voice steady but with a tone of interest, "I've heard about what you can do. How about working with us on a job?"
He didn't mince words, adding, "I'll cut to the chase. Show me what you're capable of, and we'd like you to join our team."
Ethan considered the offer briefly. Working alone wasn't part of his plan—if anything, he needed allies.
More importantly, Ethan knew he had to continue increasing his Role-Playing Progress. The stronger his connection to Genos's character, the closer he would get to unlocking greater power.
As he thought about Genos's personality and backstory, Ethan realized something crucial: Genos wasn't just a fighter.
He was a hero, driven by a profound sense of justice. Even though revenge for his family was his primary goal, Genos never lost sight of his morality.
Ethan understood that to truly embody Genos, he would need to embrace the hero's unwavering sense of justice.
Genos wasn't just powerful; his actions were deeply rooted in his desire to protect the innocent and punish the wicked.
In Night City, a cesspool of corruption and lawlessness, such ideals were almost alien. Yet, this chaotic world seemed perfectly suited for Ethan to execute justice and bring reckoning to all who thrived in its filth.
Ethan's golden eyes met Maine's as he spoke with calm conviction. "I'm willing to work with you. But there's one condition: no harm to the innocent."
Maine blinked, caught off guard. He hadn't expected such a statement from someone like Ethan—someone who had just obliterated a cybernetic enforcer with terrifying ease.
For a moment, Maine studied him carefully before nodding. "That's a fair condition," he replied seriously. "We're not terrorists. We've got our own code. But you'd better know—those gang scumbags we deal with? They don't deserve mercy."
Ethan nodded in agreement. "Justice isn't about sparing everyone. Those who deserve it will face the consequences."
Seeing Ethan's understanding, Maine's grin widened. He grabbed a vodka bottle from the table and raised it high. "Then here's to the future! To Night City!"
Without hesitation, he downed the entire bottle in one go.
Ethan smirked faintly and followed suit, grabbing a vodka bottle and finishing it in a single gulp. The alcohol hit hard, but within moments, his enhanced cybernetic organs processed and burned off the effects. While Maine's face turned red and his speech began to slur, Ethan remained as composed as ever.
Bottle after bottle, the two drank. Eventually, Maine reached his limit, his drunken antics leading him to clumsily try flirting with Dorio, only to be met with a swift kick that sent him sprawling onto a nearby bed.
Dorio rolled her eyes and muttered, "Damn lightweight." Turning to Ethan, she smirked. "You've got a hell of a tolerance, Ethan. I've never seen anyone outdrink Maine like that. Get some rest—we'll head out around four."
Ethan nodded, finishing his last bottle. "Understood."
Rebecca, meanwhile, had also been drinking heavily. Clearly drunk, she stumbled over and dropped onto the sofa beside Ethan, loudly exclaiming, "Let's keep drinking!"
Before Ethan could reply, she leaned back and passed out instantly, her breathing steady.
