Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Beacon’s Call

The safe house was silent, the team huddled around Li Wen's laptop as he worked through the data retrieved from Gao's facility. The faint hum of the computer filled the room, broken only by the occasional sigh or muttered curse from Li Wen. The atmosphere was heavy, each of them knowing that Gao's words about the Rift being a beacon weren't empty threats.

"Got it," Li Wen finally said, sitting back with a weary sigh. "It's all here. Gao's plan, the next steps… everything."

Jiang Xia leaned in, her eyes scanning the data. The diagrams and calculations painted a horrifying picture. The Rift wasn't just a doorway or a weapon—it was a signal, a call to something far greater, far more dangerous.

"He's building a new array," Li Wen explained. "It's designed to amplify the Rift's energy and send it beyond our dimension. He's trying to attract… something."

"What kind of 'something'?" Qin Chuan asked, his voice low.

Li Wen hesitated. "I don't know. The data refers to it as 'the Convergence.' Whatever it is, it's not from our reality."

Jiang Xia's stomach churned. "Where is this array?"

Xu Min pointed to the map. "It's in the mountains, in a remote military base Gao repurposed for his experiments. If he completes it, there's no stopping the signal."

"Then we stop it before he finishes," Jiang Xia said, her voice hard. "We've come too far to let him win."

---

The Journey to the Array

The drive to the mountains was grueling. The narrow roads twisted and turned through dense forests and steep cliffs, the air growing colder as they climbed higher. Jiang Xia stared out the window, her mind racing. Every step brought them closer to Gao—and closer to the unknown.

"Satellite images show heavy fortifications around the base," Xu Min said, breaking the silence. "This won't be like the last facility. Gao knows we're coming."

"Good," Qin Chuan said with a grim smile. "Let him prepare. It won't help him."

Li Wen, sitting in the backseat, was unusually quiet. He clutched his laptop tightly, his eyes darting nervously between the map and the surrounding forest.

"You okay?" Jiang Xia asked, glancing at him.

"Not really," Li Wen admitted. "This is… bigger than anything we've faced. If Gao activates the array…"

"He won't," Jiang Xia said firmly. "We'll stop him."

---

The Mountain Base

The base was a sprawling complex built into the mountainside, its cold, gray walls blending almost seamlessly with the rocky terrain. High-tech security systems lined the perimeter, and heavily armed guards patrolled the grounds.

The team parked a safe distance away, using the cover of the trees to scout the area. Xu Min studied the map, tracing a route with her finger.

"There's an access tunnel here," she said. "It'll take us straight to the control center. If we can disable the array's power source, we can shut the whole thing down."

"What about the guards?" Qin Chuan asked.

Xu Min smirked. "Leave them to me."

---

The Infiltration

The access tunnel was narrow and damp, the sound of dripping water echoing through the darkness. The team moved cautiously, their footsteps muffled by the damp ground.

At the end of the tunnel, Xu Min took out the first two guards with silent precision, her movements swift and deadly. Jiang Xia and Qin Chuan followed, their weapons at the ready.

The control center was a massive chamber filled with towering machines and glowing screens. At the center was the array itself, a massive structure of spiraling conduits and pulsating energy.

"There it is," Li Wen whispered, his voice filled with awe and dread.

"Let's shut it down," Jiang Xia said, moving toward the nearest control panel.

---

The Beacon Activates

As Li Wen worked to disable the array, the air around them began to hum with energy. The lights in the room flickered, and the ground trembled beneath their feet.

"It's starting," Xu Min said, her voice tense. "Gao's activating the array."

Li Wen's fingers flew over the keyboard. "I'm trying to reroute the power, but he's locked me out of the main system!"

"Then we'll do it manually," Jiang Xia said. "Where's the power source?"

Li Wen pointed to a massive generator in the corner of the room. "There. If we overload it, the whole system will collapse."

Qin Chuan nodded. "I'll handle it. Cover me."

---

The Fight for the Array

As Qin Chuan moved toward the generator, the doors to the control center burst open, and Gao's guards flooded the room. The team scattered, taking cover as gunfire erupted.

Jiang Xia fired at the advancing guards, her movements precise and controlled. Xu Min fought beside her, her calm demeanor hiding the intensity of her attacks.

"Li Wen, keep working!" Jiang Xia shouted over the chaos.

"I'm trying!" Li Wen yelled, frantically typing. "But Gao's system is like nothing I've ever seen!"

Qin Chuan reached the generator, planting charges on its surface. "Charges set! Get ready to move!"

---

Gao's Arrival

Before they could retreat, a deep, commanding voice echoed through the chamber. "Leaving so soon?"

Gao stepped into the room, flanked by more guards. His calm demeanor was gone, replaced by cold fury.

"You've been a thorn in my side for too long," he said, his gaze fixed on Jiang Xia. "But it ends here."

Jiang Xia raised her weapon. "We're not afraid of you, Gao."

"You should be," Gao replied, a cruel smile spreading across his face. "The Convergence is coming. And when it arrives, your world will belong to it."

---

The Final Stand

The fight intensified as Gao's guards pressed forward. Jiang Xia and Qin Chuan fought side by side, their movements synchronized as they covered Li Wen and Xu Min.

The generator began to hum violently, sparks flying as the charges reached critical levels.

"Now!" Qin Chuan shouted. "Move!"

The team sprinted toward the exit as the generator exploded, sending a shockwave through the chamber. The array flickered and collapsed, its spiraling conduits falling to the ground in a shower of sparks.

---

A Hollow Victory

Outside, the team regrouped, their breaths ragged. The mountain base burned behind them, its once-imposing walls reduced to rubble.

"We stopped the array," Xu Min said, her voice steady. "But Gao escaped. And the Convergence…"

"It's still coming," Jiang Xia finished, her heart sinking. "This isn't over."

Li Wen looked at her, his face pale but determined. "We'll stop it. We have to."

Jiang Xia nodded, her resolve hardening. "Then let's figure out how."

As the first light of dawn crept over the mountains, the team prepared for the battles to come. The fight was far from over, but they were ready.
