BAILEY
I'm beyond anxious as I sit throughout Mr Matthews lecture when I notice he's not wearing the necklace, I look out the window to calm myself down and I startle when the girl next to me taps my shoulder and I glance to her but she nods to the front, I follow her eyes to find the professor looking at me with a raised eyebrow
Shit. Did he say something?
I clear my throat and sit straighter "I'm sorry, I didn't hear the question."
"Miss…" he looks at me expectantly
"Harper. Bailey Harper"
"Miss Harper" He drawls "I asked who was the witch who killed a group of humans just by casting a spell on them?"
My heart starts pounding and I say softly "I don't know?"
He raises an eyebrow "I didn't hear you"
"I said I don't know"
"I see, then stop staring at the scenery through the window and pay attention so that you can know"
I bite my tongue as he goes on with his lecture and I hear a boy mutter from behind me "So she's not only poor but she's fucken dumb too."
I grit my teeth and clench my fist and before I even know what's happening, the boy flies across the room against the wall. Everyone gasps and my heart sinks to my stomach as he coughs while Mr Matthews helps him to stand up, asking him "Are you okay?"
"I think I broke my ribs" he groans
I stand up "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to"
Mr Matthews looks at me in surprise "It was you?"
"Yes, but I didn't mean it. I swear" I look at him with pleading eyes to believe me
He stares at me for a moment before turning to the boy "Head to the nurses office to have yourself checked out." The boy nods and leaves but not before sending a glare my way and Mr Matthews turns back to me "Come see me after class, Miss Harper."
I swallow nervously before nodding and taking my seat again, ignoring all the glances people are sending my way. They probably think I'm some weird creature which is ironic because this is a school for fucken super naturals, not everyone is going to have it figured out.
When the lecture comes to an end, I wait until the last person leaves before making my way to the professor's desk "I'm so sorry"
"Don't apologise to me, I'm not the one you threw against the wall" he drawls as he takes a seat on his chair behind his desk
"Right, I know but I just felt like you deserve an apology for disturbing your class" He hums and he stares at me for a very long moment "You asked to see me?"
"You can't control your magic." He states but I find myself answering nonetheless
"You're right."
He raises an eyebrow "How old are you exactly?"
"I'm twenty" when he continues staring at me, I ask the first thing that comes to mind "How old are you?"
He chuckles and warmth pools in my stomach at the sound "I'm thirty-one" I blink about a thousand times and he says "I find it odd that you're twenty and don't have any control over your magic"
"I didn't have anyone to…guide me"
"I see. Well, I could recommend you to a friend who would have a field day helping you."
I frown "You'd do that?"
"Of course, It's my job to help my students" He opens one of his drawers and my eyes catch on the necklace that's in there before he closes it again and holds a card for me to take "That's her number"
I clear my throat and ask casually "Why can't you help me?"
His eyes narrow "Well I don't possess any powers that could help you"
I frown "What do you mean?"
"I'm no longer a wizard"
My eyes widen in surprise and it doesn't go unnoticed that he said 'not anymore' "But you're a professor"
"I'm aware of that" he says dryly
"So does that mean you're completely…human?"
He nods "I am"
"I see" I say as I finally take the card from him "Thank you, I'll call your friend."
"You do that." He says and I give him a small smile before heading to the door "See you tomorrow, Bailey"
A shiver runs down my spine at my name on his lips with his deep voice and to stop myself from doing something stupid, I just nod and walk out.
I stand around the corner as I watch Mr Matthews classroom intently, hiding behind the wall when he exits. I wait until he's gone before speed walking over and walking inside, immediately making my way to the drawer. I smile in victory when I see the necklace and I stuff it in my pocket and pause when I see a pen with the name 'Eli Matthews' on it. I glance at the door again before grabbing the pen too and making my way out, feeling a bit proud of myself for not getting caught.
