Chapter 1 - Arc 1, Chapter 1: The Reject and the System 0

1. The Outcast's World

The air was thick with the scent of rust and decay as Kai Eran trudged through the ruins of Sector 13, his boots crunching over shattered glass and debris. Known as the Skyfall Zone, it was a graveyard of forgotten industry and discarded humanity. Towering above him were the skeletons of skyscrapers, their glass facades long shattered, their steel frames exposed to years of abandonment.

Flickering holographic billboards still clung stubbornly to life on the sides of crumbling buildings, their static-filled messages on an endless loop.

"The Global System ensures balance. Obey. Progress. Thrive."

Kai snorted, the sound bitter in the desolate silence. "Obey, progress, thrive... Easy to say when you're sitting on top of the world."

But for people like him—Rejects—the words were a cruel joke. Deemed unworthy by the omnipotent Global System, Kai had been cast into the shadows to fend for himself in a world that barely acknowledged his existence.

The faint glow of his wristband caught his attention. A red countdown ticked away relentlessly:

[System Countdown: 03:47:12]

Three hours and forty-seven minutes. That was all the time he had left to complete whatever impossible task the system would throw at him next. If he failed, there would be no second chance.

Erasure.

Kai shivered at the thought and quickened his pace, his tattered jacket flapping in the chill wind. He turned a corner, stepping under the fractured remains of an archway, and leaned against the cold stone to catch his breath.

"Alright," he muttered, his voice barely audible. "Let's get this over with."

As if responding to his words, a metallic chime echoed through the air. A blue holographic screen materialized in front of him, cold and impersonal.

2. The Impossible Task

[System Notification: Quest Assignment]

Quest Title: Catalyst Retrieval

Objective: Retrieve the Catalyst Core from the Ruined Chapel.

Location: Sector 11.

Time Remaining: 03:46:59.

Reward: 24-Hour Countdown Extension.

Penalty: Immediate Erasure.

Kai stared at the message, his jaw tightening. The Ruined Chapel was deep in Sector 11, two zones away from his current position. The path was treacherous, crawling with Corrupted—glitch-born monstrosities that thrived in the system's cracks.

"This has to be a joke," he said, running a hand through his messy black hair. But the system didn't joke. The numbers continued to tick down, indifferent to his protests.

With a resigned sigh, Kai adjusted his bag, a patchwork of scavenged straps and fabric, and began his journey.

3. The Struggle to Survive

Sector 13 was a wasteland, a place where the discarded remnants of progress went to die. Rusted machinery lay in tangled heaps, their once-mighty forms reduced to silent witnesses of decay.

The people here—Rejects like Kai—clung to life with the tenacity of cockroaches. They scavenged scraps of metal, broken tech, and anything else that could be bartered for food or supplies.

Kai passed a group of them huddled around a makeshift fire, their gaunt faces illuminated by the weak flames. None of them looked up as he walked by. In the Skyfall Zone, everyone was a stranger, and trust was a luxury no one could afford.

A sudden crash echoed through the alleyway ahead, followed by a low, guttural growl. Kai froze, his hand instinctively going to the rusty pipe strapped to his bag.

From the shadows emerged a hulking beast, its metal-plated body glinting in the dim light. Its glowing red eyes locked onto him, and its claws scraped against the concrete as it advanced.

[System Alert: Hostile Detected]

Entity: Corrupted Hound

Level: 7

Kai's heart sank. He was only Level 3, unarmed except for the crude pipe. "Of course," he muttered.

The beast crouched, muscles coiling, and lunged.

4. The Fight for Time

Kai dove to the side, the hound's snapping jaws missing him by inches. He scrambled to his feet, gripping the pipe like a lifeline.

The hound growled, its claws clicking on the pavement as it circled him. Its movements were unnervingly precise, its glowing eyes locked onto Kai's every step.

"Alright," Kai said, tightening his grip. "Let's see what you've got."

The beast charged again, and Kai swung the pipe with all his strength. The impact sent a jarring vibration up his arms, but the hound barely flinched.

It retaliated with a swipe of its claws, catching Kai across the arm. He stumbled back, pain flaring as blood seeped through the tear in his jacket.

"You're tougher than you look," he muttered through gritted teeth.

His eyes darted around, searching for something—anything—that could give him an edge. Spotting a jagged shard of metal embedded in the rubble, he formulated a desperate plan.

When the hound lunged again, Kai sidestepped, leading it toward the shard. As the beast skidded to a halt, Kai swung the pipe, driving the shard deep into its exposed wiring.

The creature howled, sparks flying from its body as it collapsed in a heap.

[System Notification: Enemy Defeated]

XP Gained: +50

Level Progress: 3 → 3 (45%)

Kai dropped the pipe, his chest heaving. Blood dripped from his arm, staining the ground.

"That was too close," he muttered, clutching his wound.

The countdown on his wristband glowed faintly.

[System Countdown: 03:29:12]

He couldn't afford to waste any more time.

5. An Unexpected Ally

The transition from Sector 13 to Sector 12 was marked by the remnants of a massive gate, now little more than rusted beams and broken stone. As Kai approached, he felt the distinct sensation of being watched.

"You're not half bad," a voice called out.

Kai spun around, his pipe raised defensively. A young woman stepped out of the shadows, her arms crossed. She was dressed in a mix of armor and scavenged tech, her short hair streaked with electric blue.

"Who the hell are you?" Kai demanded.

The woman smirked. "Relax. Name's Lyra. I've been watching you."

Kai didn't lower the pipe. "Why?"

Lyra shrugged. "You've got potential. And I could use someone like you."

Kai narrowed his eyes. "I don't trust strangers."

"Smart," Lyra said, her smirk widening. "But trust me or not, you're going to need help if you're heading to the Ruined Chapel."

Kai hesitated. He didn't trust her, but the timer on his wristband left him little choice.

"Fine," he said. "But if you try anything, I won't hesitate."

Lyra laughed. "Fair enough."
