1. A Safe Haven?
The ruins of Sector 8 stretched out before Kai, its desolate streets echoing with eerie silence. The faint glow from the map interface guided him toward the hidden bunker, but his legs burned with exhaustion, and his mind was still reeling from what had happened with the Specter.
"What was that back there?" he muttered, glancing down at his hands. Though the glow had faded, he could still feel the lingering sensation of power coursing through his veins.
The faint hum of drones searching nearby urged him to press on. Sector 8 had once been a fortified zone during the early days of the Global System's reign, but now it was nothing more than a graveyard of forgotten battles.
After what felt like an eternity, Kai found himself standing before a massive, rusted door embedded in a cliffside. Faded markings on the door hinted at its significance:
"System Node 08 - Core Access Restricted"
He hesitated, glancing over his shoulder to ensure he wasn't being followed. Then, he raised the map interface to the door's scanner.
A mechanical voice crackled to life.
"Unauthorized user detected. Identify or face termination."
"Terminate me later," Kai muttered. "Open the damn door."
The scanner flashed red for a moment, then beeped. Against all odds, the door groaned as it began to open, its ancient mechanisms grinding painfully.
"Lucky me," Kai said, slipping inside before the door could change its mind.

2. The Forgotten Sanctuary
The bunker's interior was surprisingly intact. Dim lights flickered on overhead, casting an eerie glow over the long, metallic corridors. Dust clung to every surface, and the air smelled stale, but at least it was quiet.
Kai moved cautiously, his makeshift weapon at the ready. The faint hum of dormant machinery echoed around him, and he couldn't shake the feeling that something—or someone—was watching him.
At the end of the corridor, he found a massive chamber filled with ancient consoles and towering servers. In the center of the room sat a pedestal, its surface etched with glowing blue runes.
[System Notification: Core Node Detected]
Kai approached the pedestal, his heart pounding. The energy in the air felt similar to what he had experienced earlier with the Specter.
As he reached out, a voice boomed through the chamber.
"Halt! Unauthorized access is prohibited!"
Kai froze as a hologram materialized above the pedestal. It depicted an elderly man in a formal suit, his face stern and unyielding.
"Who are you?" the hologram demanded. "Why have you come here?"
Kai hesitated, then crossed his arms. "I could ask you the same thing. Aren't you supposed to be part of the system?"
The hologram's eyes narrowed. "I am Administrator Helios, the overseer of Core Node 08. This facility is classified. Explain your presence or be eliminated."
Kai's frustration bubbled over. "Listen, Helios, I didn't exactly choose to be here. The system's trying to kill me, and I'm just trying to survive. Now, can you help me or not?"
Helios studied him for a long moment. "You are… a Reject."
"Wow, thanks for noticing," Kai said dryly.
The hologram flickered, its tone shifting. "And yet, you are still alive. Fascinating. The system does not tolerate anomalies."
Kai shrugged. "Yeah, well, I've been told I'm good at not dying. Now, about that Core…"

3. The Truth About the Cores
Helios seemed to pause, as if considering something. Finally, he said, "Very well. If you have made it this far, then perhaps you are worthy of the truth."
The room dimmed as the hologram displayed a series of images: ancient battles, towering machines, and a sprawling network of interconnected nodes.
"The Global System," Helios began, "was designed to bring order to chaos. Humanity's wars, greed, and destruction necessitated intervention. The Cores were created to maintain balance and enforce the system's laws."
Kai frowned. "Yeah, about that. Balance doesn't really seem like the right word when people are dying every day just to keep their timers running."
Helios ignored the comment. "Over time, the system evolved. It grew beyond its original purpose, and its enforcement became absolute. Those who failed to comply were deemed… expendable."
Kai clenched his fists. "And what about the Rejects? Why were we cast out?"
Helios hesitated. "The Rejects are anomalies—individuals who, for reasons unknown, cannot be fully integrated into the system. You are viewed as threats to its balance."
Kai scoffed. "So, what? We're just glitches to be erased?"
"Perhaps," Helios said. "But anomalies also possess potential. You, in particular, have already demonstrated abilities that defy standard parameters."
Kai's pulse quickened. "What are you talking about?"
Helios gestured to the pedestal. "The Core fragments you carry resonate with your energy. This is not a coincidence. There is something within you that the system cannot control."

4. A New Purpose
Kai stared at the pedestal, his mind racing. "So… what happens if I activate this Core?"
Helios's expression turned grave. "Activating the Core will grant you temporary access to its power. However, doing so will also alert the system to this location. You will have limited time to escape before it sends reinforcements."
Kai cursed under his breath. "Of course. Nothing's ever easy."
He glanced down at his wristband. The countdown continued to tick away, mocking him.
[System Countdown: 16:42:10]
"Fine," he said finally. "Let's do it. What do I need to do?"
Helios's hologram nodded. "Place your hand on the pedestal and focus your energy. The Core will do the rest."
Kai approached the pedestal, his heart pounding. The glowing runes seemed to pulse in rhythm with his heartbeat, and as he placed his hand on the surface, a surge of energy shot through him.
The room filled with blinding light, and Kai felt a rush of power unlike anything he had ever experienced. His wristband buzzed violently, displaying a new message:
[System Update: User Level Increased – Level 4 Achieved]
[Skill Unlocked: Arc Pulse]
Before Kai could process the notifications, the hologram spoke urgently. "You must leave now. The system is aware of your presence."

5. The Chase Begins
The bunker's walls trembled as alarms blared. Kai stumbled back from the pedestal, his body still buzzing with energy.
Helios's voice cut through the chaos. "The system has deployed Specters and drones. You must escape before they arrive."
"Great," Kai muttered. "Guess I'm back to running for my life."
As he sprinted toward the exit, a faint blue glow surrounded his hands. The newly unlocked skill—Arc Pulse—hummed with potential, and he had a feeling he'd need it soon.
The massive bunker doors groaned open, revealing the desolate wasteland of Sector 8. In the distance, red lights flickered, accompanied by the mechanical howls of the Corrupted.
Kai gritted his teeth. "Bring it on."
He tightened his grip on his pipe, his mind focused on the next step. The system wanted him erased, but for the first time, he felt like he might have a chance to fight back.
