"Lindsay?" The Minister's inquiring voice called out at her, reminding her that he was waiting for her to agree to his offer or not.
"Yes Pastor. I am deeply grateful for this. It came as a pleasant surprise to me that you would even consider giving me that opportunity," she replied.
He only smiled and nodded. "So when can you start? I know Matt will need you around because his health," he said.
"Right away Sir. My son is getting better every day, besides, he his surrounded by his other siblings and his grandmother most of the time and won't feel my absence that much," she replied.
"Oh yes. I am afraid for a while there, I completely forgot about your mum. Such an amazing bundle of energy. Anyway, it's the holidays, you can manage your time well," he added.
Lindsay felt a presence at the door but before turning to know who, heard the voice of the Pastor's wife say, "I hope you accepted the offer?"
She walked over to Lindsay where she was sitting and patted her on the shoulders. "We would be glad for the help, I know how intelligent you are, your mother speaks highly of you."
Blushing at her statement, Lindsay nodded and said, "Thank you very much, I will start right away."
"Good. Take these ledgers with you and work on them at home. I would like to have them by tomorrow, I am going over to the city council for a meeting the day," he said, handing over a couple of files to her.
"I would like a financial report sent to my email after you are done," he said. My best regards to your husband and your mother dear," he added.
They both watched as she took her leave.
Lindsay, now out of the office and making her way out of the church was telling herself that, " indeed there was still hope."
She walked back home still lost in thought and only realized she was almost home when her phone began to ring.
"It was her room mate from her days at the university, several years ago, they had kept in touch since parting ways but they had last spoken when she had Matt."
"To be frank, Lindsay was surprised that Nancy would still call her because she had temporarily forgotten about her."
"Hi, what is this I hear about Rex losing all of his business and going bankrupt? I just came into town and heard news of all sorts," Nancy exclaimed as soon as Lindsay answered the call.
"How have you been? It's been five years since we've both been out of touch. I see that you have heard, well, it's all true. Will you be staying in Boston for long?" Lindsay said.
Finally home and walking through her garden, she decided to sit down on one of the armchairs as she continued her conversation with her, "one time roommate."
"Oh my God. What a shame! I still don't get how he steadily lost everything, I am still trying to come to terms with the news. I have always thought of just how lucky you were to have landed a wealthy husband," Lindsay heard her say, and could detect a trace of envy in her voice.
"Really? If she had been that way I never noticed," Lindsay thought to herself. "She and Nancy had been great as roommates but never got to the level of best friends," she recalled.
"Nancy travelled a lot and lived life on the fast lane, and Lindsay wasn't sure she was ready to match that energy even though Nancy had wanted more than just being great roommates with her."
"Lindsay had been content having her twin sister, Loraine as her best friend and wasn't actively looking out for one. However, she and Nancy had found themselves paired together and luckily, it wasn't a disaster," she reminisced.
"Nancy and her brother, Christopher had been the only children of parents who had both died in a car crash when they were both still in elementary school."
"Yes, I am still around. I will be staying with my brother and his wife until I figure out what to do. I just recently got divorced from my Italian husband, I am sorry I didn't tell you about my wedding, it happened so fast," Lindsay heard her say.
"You mean Christopher lives here in Boston?" Lindsay asked, "totally surprised at this revelation. And he was now married, that's good," she thought to herself.
"Indeed. I won't be surprised that you both haven't run into one another, the city is quite vast, plus you live in the middle of the town while my brother lives in the outskirts," Nancy said.
"Well, Christopher was always by himself," she recalled from their university days, "he was always around his older sister and rarely made friends"
"Well, I am hurt you eventually got married and I wasn't invited for the wedding you know, I was one of the agitators for you to settle down," Lindsay teased.
"She had told Nancy several times over the years to give it a thought when she had revealed to Lindsay that she was fed up with being in and out of relationships."
"I am truly sorry Lindy. My secret wish was to call you from the maternity room telling you I had given birth to my first baby. Sadly, it didn't work out," she confessed.
"I am sorry too. It's been crazy around here since my husband's sudden misfortune and I couldn't check up on you either," Lindsay said, her voice sad.
"I am okay now. I closed down my business in Italy and took a vacation away from it all. Boston was an ideal option at least my brother is here," Nancy replied.
"I think we should all meet soon. The strangest thing is that I have had several other great friends since you and I parted ways but for some reason my brother never stops talking about you," She heard Nancy say.
