Chapter 11 - Power Play

Christopher continued looking at him, knowing there was more. "Senator Luther was leading in the race for who would govern the city of Boston and so far, he was succeeding."

"He was the president of the board of city council and the others sucked up to him because he could make or mar their individual businesses."

"Christopher had casually told him that he would back him with everything needed just as long as Rex Michaels could no longer work in their city."

It was he who masterminded the sabotage of Rex's business empire, planting spies in his business and using the same people to wreak havoc leading to huge losses and a vote of no confidence in Rex's franchise.

At first, they had wanted to resist Christopher because the philanthropist was loved by many but with the threat to their political ambitions, they quietly agreed.

"After all, by helping the needy, many of the well-to-do found themselves being boycotted by the poor and helpless who realized that they could get financial help and job opportunities from Rex," a development they could do without.

Christopher ensured that he opened their eyes to these facts and the rest was history. The man sitting before him had already gained a lot from Christopher.

As the senator looked at Christopher's reaction to the news, he hoped that his Godfather would be happy.

"Even his wife has been frustrated from getting a job," he added gleefully. He saw Christopher look straight into his eyes then relaxed his face, smiling slightly.

"Thank God," the senator whispered inwardly as he made an imaginary sign of the cross. "The last thing he wanted to happen was Christopher Wells becoming upset."

"Really? You mean she is actually looking for employment?" He asked, voice raised in wonder. "Wow. That woman is an enigma," he thought to himself, meanwhile.

"Oh yes. I must confess that she has an impressive c-v just like her husband, from the news I hear on television about him over the years," the senator added sheepishly.

"Don't tell me you are becoming impressed by them. You had better not lose focus Luther, and I don't need to highlight the reasons to you," Christopher's barely concealed threat didn't go unnoticed.

"Not at all. I was merely recounting what I know," the senator quickly countered. "I will like to assure you of my complete allegiance to you sir," he told Christopher.

Finally appeased, "Christopher picked up his phone and made several calls while Luther stayed quiet."

As he sat listening to Christopher, Senator Luther told himself several times not to make an enemy of this man.

"It was ironic that he feared this man who although wasn't a politician, could make things happen very quickly. He had heard tales of how he took care of his enemies."

"The latest of which was Rex Michaels." Well, he didn't care whatever happens to that former philanthropist and entrepreneur and his home just as long as he got to govern the city of Boston this time around," he thought.

"Any update from that church they both attend? Are they making any moves to reconcile them both?" he heard Christopher ask.

"Wow! Even right to the church they attend? That is very thorough," Senator Luther thought to himself.

Christopher, expecting a response from him, continued staring at him. "Did these clowns not understand what he was on about?" he queried inwardly.

"I will look into it and get back to you soon enough," the senator replied. Christopher stayed calm, "he had his ways anyway and would find out about it himself.

"We are done here I am sure, so you can run along now, I have another appointment to get to," he told the senator, dismissively.

The Sena took his leave and Christopher watched him leave. "So Lindsay was looking for a job, how could her so-called husband let her do that?" He pondered.

"My woman is not cut out to suffer. Rex Michaels has failed in his duty and I am going to show him just how it is done," he promised himself yet again.

"Tomorrow, there was going to be a meeting of the board of the city council and the various clergymen were expected to be in attendance," he recalled.

"I will get more information about what is going on between husband and wife," he assured himself.

Leaving the garden he drove home. He had lied about having another appointment just to get rid of the senator.

On getting home, "Nancy was nowhere and he was glad. She would have wanted to know where he went several hours ago instead of keeping her company," he deliberated within himself.

"Tonight, he wanted distraction and planned on going to his wife's bedroom to pass the night just as soon as he was done listening to the news," he thought.

"It was already seven o'clock that evening and he turned on the television. Almost two hours later he was still glued to the television, "when heard the faint sound of a door being opened."

"It was his wife's bedroom and he waited, knowing she was about to interrupt his personal time."

"Oh, how long have you been home? I returned this afternoon to find your sister all by herself, complaining that you left her like you didn't want her company," Leonora began to say.

"I will take care of my sister, now what do you want?" He challenged. "Lots of times, he wished he lived alone but it was too late for that now," he thought, filled with regret.

I would like to spend quality time with my husband, is that too much to ask?" She equally challenged him.

"She is lucky that I am in the mood to be distracted," he told himself before putting off the television and turning to face her he said, "Let's go to bed."

She nodded and led the way. Much later in the night, just when he was about dozing off she said, "We need to talk about starting a family Chris, I want to have children."
