Chapter 11 - Evelyn's Astonishing Discovery

It was another sunny day, yet Evelyn had lost the leisure to enjoy the nice weather as she usually did. The curiosity and doubts about Lucas in her heart still lingered like a shadow, driving her to continue on the path of exploration. She was dressed in a light pink knitted cardigan over a white dress, looking gentle and elegant. However, the slightly furrowed brows betrayed the struggle and uneasiness in her heart.

Evelyn came to the alley where she and Lucas had first met once again. Standing at the entrance of the alley, she looked at the familiar yet somewhat secluded passageway, trying to catch a whiff of an air that might be related to Lucas. The sunlight fell on her, casting a faint shadow, but her mind was completely absent from this warm atmosphere. In her mind, the bits and pieces of Lucas kept replaying, those mysterious moments, those words that he had held back on the tip of his tongue, which made her feel as if she was touching a forbidden yet fascinating world.

She walked slowly along the alley, not missing any corner. Her eyes scanned everything around her as carefully as a scanner. Suddenly, she noticed a scratch on the corner of the wall. The scratch didn't seem to be caused by the friction of ordinary objects but rather by something sharp and hard that had been dragged across forcefully. The shape was strange and had an indescribable fierceness. Evelyn crouched down, leaned in to take a look, and gently touched the scratch with her fingers. An inexplicable nervousness welled up in her heart. She felt that this might have some connection with Lucas. Although there was no basis for it, her intuition kept reminding her.

Just then, a stray cat sprang out from behind the pile of debris beside her, startling Evelyn. She patted her chest and watched the cat run away in shock. And where the cat had run past, a tattered piece of paper was brought out and fluttered gently in the wind. Evelyn quickly got up, chased after it for a few steps, and reached out to grab the piece of paper. The paper had already turned a bit yellowish, with its edges in tatters, and there were some faint and blurry words on it, as if it had been torn from a book or a document.

Evelyn carefully held the piece of paper and walked to the place with good light at the entrance of the alley, carefully making out the words on it. Although most of the words were hard to read, she still managed to distinguish a few words, "the Dark Night", "Immortality", "Special Abilities". The combination of these words gave Evelyn's heart a jolt, and an inexplicable chill spread from the bottom of her heart. Her eyes widened, and the doubts in her heart grew even heavier. These words seemed to point to a direction beyond common sense, but she didn't dare to think in that direction, for it was too absurd and strange.

With this mysterious piece of paper in hand, Evelyn hurried home. She sat at her desk, turned on the desk lamp, placed the piece of paper under the light, and examined it carefully once again, trying to interpret more information from the blurry marks. Her hands unconsciously clenched, and her breathing became a bit rapid. All kinds of strange thoughts kept flashing through her mind, and the figure of Lucas was always looming in those thoughts.

After some efforts, Evelyn still couldn't get more useful content from the piece of paper. She leaned back on the chair dejectedly, but the urge to explore in her heart didn't weaken at all. She decided to search online. Maybe she could find some clues related to these keywords.

Evelyn turned on the computer and quickly tapped on the keyboard. After typing in those keywords, various kinds of information popped up on the web page. Most of them were introductions to fantasy novels and movies, which didn't offer any substantial help. She didn't give up and kept changing the ways of searching, browsing the content of those web pages one by one. Her eyes became a bit sore from looking at the screen for so long, but she still found nothing.

Just when she was about to give up, a post on a niche forum caught her attention. The title of the post was "Those Mysterious Beings Hidden in the Dark Night". With a glimmer of expectation, Evelyn clicked on the post. It told some folk legends and mysterious stories. Among them, there was a paragraph that mentioned a kind of humanoid creature. They possessed extraordinary powers, could move freely in the dark night, were afraid of sunlight, lived by sucking blood, and had an extremely long lifespan, almost immortal. Reading this, Evelyn's heart seemed to stop for a moment. Her lips trembled slightly, and her palms were sweaty. A terrifying and unbelievable thought popped up in her mind - Could Lucas be such a being?

Once this thought emerged, it grew like wild grass in her heart. She wanted to deny it immediately, telling herself that it was just a absurd legend. How could Lucas be like this? However, recalling those distinctive aspects of Lucas, such as always appearing at night, being extraordinarily agile, and the occasional sense of vicissitudes in his deep eyes as if he had gone through countless years, everything seemed to faintly confirm this terrifying speculation.

Evelyn covered her face with her hands, trying to calm herself down. Her heart was caught in a huge struggle. On the one hand, she loved Lucas deeply and didn't want to believe that he could be such an existence that defied common sense. On the other hand, the various clues in front of her made her unable to easily ignore this possibility. She didn't know what to do next. Should she continue to explore and completely uncover the truth that might break her down, or should she stop here, maintain the status quo, and continue to indulge in the wonderful time spent with Lucas? She sat there, lost in deep confusion and pain, as if trapped in a dark fog, unable to find the direction forward.
