Chapter 13 - Lucas's Confession

The days passed slowly in Evelyn's anxiety and confusion, and every minute and second was like torture for her. The doubts hidden in the bottom of her heart were like heavy boulders, weighing her down so much that she could hardly breathe. Finally, one evening, Evelyn received an invitation from Lucas, asking her to meet at the seaside. Looking at the short text on the screen of her mobile phone, Evelyn's heart tightened instantly. There was both the expectation of seeing him soon and the fear of uncovering the truth that might come.

Evelyn carefully chose a sea-blue long dress. The hem of the dress swayed gently as she walked, as if the waves were rolling gently. She let her hair down, and several strands of hair were blown by the evening wind and stuck to her somewhat pale cheeks. She looked at herself in the mirror and tried hard to force a smile, but that smile was tinged with bitterness and couldn't hide the worry in her eyes at all.

When she arrived at the seaside, the setting sun had already dyed the entire sea surface a magnificent orange-red. The sparkling water was like scattered pieces of fine gold, truly a beautiful sight. The sea breeze blew gently, carrying a salty smell, blowing up her dress and hair. It should have been an extremely pleasant scene, but Evelyn only felt extremely nervous.

Lucas had already been standing by the seaside rocks waiting. He was still wearing that iconic long black windbreaker, and the corners of his coat fluttered in the wind, making his figure look even taller and more mysterious. His face, under the illumination of the afterglow of the setting sun, had clear contours. His deep eyes were looking at the sea, as if lost in deep thought or carrying endless worries.

Hearing Evelyn's footsteps, Lucas slowly turned around. When he saw her, a glint of tenderness and joy flashed in his eyes. He said softly, "Evelyn, you're here." Evelyn nodded slightly and tried to make her voice sound steady as she replied, "Well, the seaside is really beautiful today." However, the slightly trembling tone still betrayed her inner panic at this moment.

The two of them were silent for a while first, just standing there quietly, looking at the dreamy seascape in front of them. But that silence seemed to weigh a thousand pounds, making people feel uncomfortable. Finally, Evelyn took a deep breath and summoned up the courage to break the silence. She raised her head, looked directly into Lucas's eyes, with complex emotions in her eyes, and asked, "Lucas, I... I've discovered some things recently, things that made me very confused and scared. I think I must talk to you about them."

Lucas looked at her, with his brows furrowing slightly and a puzzled look on his face. He asked, "What is it? You look very uneasy. Don't be afraid. You can tell me anything." Evelyn bit her lip, unconsciously clenched the hem of her dress, hesitated for a moment, and then slowly said, "I... I've discovered some records about special creatures. They have extraordinary abilities, are afraid of sunlight, live by sucking blood, and have an extremely long lifespan. I... I always feel that there are many similarities between you and those descriptions, Lucas. Can... can you tell me what's going on?"

After saying these words, Evelyn stared nervously at Lucas's face. Her palms were sweaty, and her body was trembling slightly. She was both afraid of hearing the answer she least wanted to hear and eager to know the truth, even if that truth would completely overturn her world.

Hearing her words, Lucas first showed a bitter smile on his face, and then slowly sighed. He turned around and looked at the sea again, as if drawing the courage to tell from the vast seascape. After a while, he said in a low and slightly hoarse voice, "Evelyn, since you've already guessed so much, I don't want to hide it from you anymore. Actually, most of what you guessed is true. I... I'm indeed not an ordinary human being."

Evelyn felt as if a thunderbolt had exploded beside her ears when she heard this. She widened her eyes and looked at Lucas's back in disbelief. Although she had been somewhat prepared in her heart, when she heard this answer with her own ears, she still felt that her whole world had collapsed. Tears instantly blurred her eyes. Her voice was choked with sobs as she asked, "Why? How could this be? Lucas, how could you be such a... such an existence?"

Lucas still didn't turn around. His back looked a bit lonely and was filled with a deep sense of helplessness. He said slowly, "It's a long and painful past, Evelyn. My origin was full of mysteries. I didn't want to become what I am now either, but the track of fate led me onto this unusual path. Would... would you like to listen to me tell my story?"

Evelyn wiped her tears with her hand. Although her heart was full of pain and shock, she still nodded. She knew that at this moment, she had to understand everything about Lucas, no matter how cruel the truth was. After all, she loved the man in front of her so deeply, even if he wasn't what she had originally thought.

Lucas slowly sat down on the rock and patted the place beside him, indicating that Evelyn should also sit down. Evelyn hesitated for a moment and then slowly walked over and sat beside him. The sea breeze was still blowing gently, but the atmosphere between the two of them at this moment was extremely heavy, as if shrouded by a thick fog of sadness.

Lucas looked at the distant sea level and fell into memories. After a long time, he slowly began to tell that long-buried past. "It was a long, long time ago. I originally lived in a quiet small village and had a simple and happy life with my family. I was just an ordinary teenager at that time, and all I thought about every day was helping my family with work and playing with my friends..." Lucas's voice carried a hint of distant recollection, as if it had traveled through the long years and brought Evelyn into that long-lost time and space together.
