Chapter 18 - The First Test of a Luna

The air was thick with tension the next morning. Though the pack went about their routines, whispers spread like wildfire. Lyra's conversation with Brison had not gone unnoticed, and many wolves speculated what it might mean for the future of their Luna.

Kate felt the weight of their stares as she helped a group of younger wolves with their training. She kept her head high, focusing on the task at hand. If she was going to earn their respect, she would do it by proving her worth, not by shrinking from the challenge.

Brison, ever-attentive, stood at the edge of the training field, watching her closely. His presence was a steadying force, but Kate knew she couldn't rely on him to shield her from the pack's scrutiny. This was her fight as much as it was his.

Later that day, Brison called a pack meeting near the central fire pit. The entire pack gathered, their expressions a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. Kate stood beside him, her hand brushing against his for support.

"I've called you all here to address the unrest I sense in the pack," Brison began, his voice steady and commanding. "Some of you have doubts about Kate's place as your Luna. I understand that change is hard, but let me make one thing clear—Kate is my mate, chosen by the bond that binds us. That is not up for debate."

A murmur spread through the crowd, and then a voice rang out.

"What if she's not strong enough to lead us?"

All eyes turned to Lyra, who stepped forward, her golden gaze fixed on Kate. Her tone was measured but sharp. "We've always believed our Luna should be a warrior, someone who knows our ways. How can an outsider truly lead?"

Kate's heart raced, but she met Lyra's gaze head-on.

"I may not have grown up in this pack," Kate said, her voice steady, "but I've faced challenges that tested my strength and my loyalty. I'm here now, and I'm ready to fight for this pack—for all of you."

Lyra's lips curled into a smirk. "Then prove it."

Brison's eyes narrowed. "Lyra, this is not the time or place for challenges—"

"She wants to be our Luna, let her show us she's capable," Lyra interrupted. "It's tradition, Alpha. Or have you forgotten?"

The tension was palpable. Brison's jaw clenched, but Kate touched his arm gently.

"I'll do it," she said, her voice firm.

Brison turned to her, his expression a mix of concern and pride. "Kate, you don't have to—"

"Yes, I do," she interrupted. "If I'm going to lead this pack, I need to earn their respect. Let me prove myself."

The challenge was set for the following morning. The pack gathered at the edge of a clearing, where Kate and Lyra would face off in a series of tests meant to measure strength, agility, and cunning. The winner would earn the respect of the pack—or so Lyra claimed.

Kate stood at the edge of the field, her nerves simmering beneath the surface. Brison approached her, his expression serious.

"Are you sure about this?" he asked, his voice low.

"I have to do this," Kate said, meeting his gaze. "For us. For the pack."

Brison nodded, pride shining in his eyes. "Then show them who you are."

The first challenge was a test of agility: an obstacle course through the dense forest. Lyra moved with practiced ease, her movements fluid and precise. Kate, though less experienced, relied on her instincts and determination, weaving through the trees and leaping over fallen logs with surprising speed.

When they emerged from the forest, Kate was only a few steps behind Lyra, earning murmurs of approval from the pack.

The second challenge tested strength: a sparring match in the clearing. Lyra was relentless, her attacks swift and calculated. But Kate was no stranger to fighting for her survival. She ducked and dodged, countering Lyra's blows with a fierce determination that earned her a few solid strikes.

When the match ended, both women were breathing hard, their bodies bruised but unbroken. The pack was silent, their gazes flicking between the two.

The final challenge was one of cunning: a hunt. Kate and Lyra were tasked with tracking and capturing prey in the surrounding forest. The first to return with their catch would win.

Kate moved through the forest, her senses sharper than ever. She relied on the instincts she was still learning to trust, letting the bond with Brison guide her. She caught the scent of a deer and moved silently through the underbrush, her heart pounding.

When she returned to the clearing with her catch, Lyra was already there, her prey laid out before her. But rather than looking victorious, Lyra's expression was troubled.

"What happened?" Kate asked, stepping forward.

Lyra hesitated before speaking, her voice quieter than before. "You followed the scent of the deer… but you didn't notice the shadows following you."

Kate's blood ran cold. "Shadows?"

Brison stepped forward, his expression grim. "The darkness is getting bolder. We need to prepare for an attack."

Lyra looked at Kate, her earlier animosity replaced by something resembling respect. "You're stronger than I gave you credit for," she admitted. "But strength alone won't be enough. We need to work together if we're going to survive."

Kate nodded, determination burning in her chest. "Then let's get to work."
