Chapter 22 - 22. ABILITYLESS

Here's a refined version of your passage:

[You have completed your first Walk.]

[You have profoundly altered the past, ushering in a new fate and a realm of possibilities.]

[You have received {An Old Man's Kindness}.]

{An Old Man's Kindness}

[Category: Special Auxiliary]

[Description: A token that provides an endless supply of Mahogana cigarettes, given to an Unnamed Non-Existent Entity as a memento.]

Vikram slowly opened his eyes and saw that he was in a pod of some kind. He was floating and an oxygen mask was on his face. He panicked for a second, doubting that some dubious experiment was running, but a buff man with muscles bulging looked at him and signaled him to calm down.

He was definitely not calming down.

The man pushed a couple of buttons, and Vikram felt that the water draining rapidly. After moments, he felt the oxygen mask disconnect from his face, and the pod slowly open.

"Congratulations Walker Vikram! You have successfully integrated into the Mother System." The man towered over Vikram and looked at him with a stiff smile that really didn't belong on his face.

Only when the man stood in front of Vikram did he realize he needed to check if he was wearing clothes, and indeed, he was—he wore skin-tight black sportswear.

Feeling at ease, Vikram looked at the man, feeling all sorts of puzzlement.

"Walker Vikram, follow me. My name is Brunus," the man introduced himself. As he had promised, Brunus led Vikram into a quiet and peaceful room and explained everything his confused mind had been yearning for answers to.

It seemed that the Earth Regime had been completely eradicated, leaving no trace behind. In its place, a new regime had emerged: the Mother System.

The system was... Vikram didn't have an accurate grasp of the scale, but it was at least a galactic power, and there was a centralized land in which the Mother System reigned supreme.

The land he had visited before, the Blood Desert, was a small part of the Axis, and what he lived through was a recording of the past...

The Genesis of Axis.

It was the capital of the Mother System, so to speak. Vikram inquired about the figurehead of the Mother System, and the man explained that it was, simply put, an AI program.

Vikram also noticed that the muscles that the man had weren't for show, similar to the Hulk he had fought before. The air around him was somewhat different, which meant that the man had power beyond the ordinary.

Brunus mentioned that he had been assigned an apartment but would no longer be able to return to his original apartment, nor was he allowed to share anything about the Awakening on social media. He had to comply due to the upper echelons conducting 'behavior analysis' of recent 'participants,' as the only alternative was death.

He did, and when he stepped outside, he was completely stunned. What lay before him wasn't Kerala, but a sprawling metropolis far more advanced than anything from this era.

Towering buildings reached into the sky, with one in the distance soaring beyond the clouds. The technological advancements surrounding Vikram were far beyond the capabilities of the present age.

"One of the reasons the Mother System can effortlessly occupy multiple planets with minimal resistance is its ability to offer technological advancements once thought impossible," Brunus remarked, walking alongside him as they both made their way to the canteen.

Brunus was wearing a loose black shirt and a khaki cargo, as he walked beside Vikram, giving Vikram, whose nerves were taut, a sense of peace and serenity. "We also give multiple merits to the authorities that ruled the planet, which makes the process very easy,"

"What if they still don't agree," Vikram asked, and for the first time, Vikram saw a flash of fierceness in the face of Brunus, who had a carefree expression as he smirked, and gave him a side-eye.

Upon finally reaching the canteen, Vikram ordered a variety of dishes, as he was famished. The table appeared to be made of a black stone—both hard and soft at the same time—which unsettled him. However, the moment the food arrived, all his thoughts faded, and he indulged himself completely.

"Vikram, you were the last Walker to wake up from the trial—unnaturally late. That suggests there's some mutation in your Inherent Ability. If you could share any details, I'll gladly leave you to your meal," Brunus said, running his fingers through his glossy black hair as he crossed his legs and glanced at Vikram with a yawn.

"I don't have one," Vikram replied, pausing as a shiver ran down his spine when he noticed Brunus staring at him, as if ready to beat him up.

"I really don't have time to play games, Vikram. Please cooperate," Brunus growled through gritted teeth, staring him down. He truly had no patience for this.

"I-I really don't have one," Vikram stammered, realizing just how powerful Brunus truly was. A sense of dread crept over him, as though something might swallow him whole.

Brunus snorted and grabbed Vikram's hand, and Vikram felt a strange energy probing through his body. He watched as Brunus's expression shifted—from anger, to surprise, to utter shock, and finally, to pity.

Vikram yanked his hand away and resumed eating, ignoring Brunus, who opened and closed his mouth several times before finally leaving the table.

After finishing the meal, which was thankfully free, Vikram wiped his face and rubbed his eyes. Eating so much food had been a real chore, so he was excessively sweating...

**************************

Vikram looked outside his new apartment window. The night was blanketing the sky, the moonlight was passing inside his house, and Vikram was feeling sleepy.

Vikram got inside his bed, covered himself with his sheet, and curled himself as he slept slowly, like a hurt puppy.

Here's a smoother and more coherent version of the passage:

Vikram slowly drifted into sleep, and the next time he opened his eyes, he found himself in a pitch-black lair. The darkness surrounded him like a gaping maw, filled with a sense of dread. But through the oppressive gloom, he noticed a faint light, a small mote that gradually gained momentum, growing brighter and brighter until it shone like a blazing sun.

The light felt as if it were burning through him. Vikram jolted awake, drenched in sweat. "What the hell?" he muttered, overwhelmed by a surge of emotions. As he took a few moments to calm himself, his exhaustion quickly took over, and he decided not to dwell on the strange vision. He pushed the thoughts to the back of his mind.

However, as he tried to fall back asleep, a shiver ran down his spine.

Lying beside him was a CD case, something he was certain hadn't been there before. The name on the case read "Athenia."

Curious, Vikram reached for the CD. The moment his fingers touched it, the case disintegrated into black smoke, which then swirled into his body.

Vikram collapsed back onto his bed, unconscious.
