Chapter 23 - CHAPTER 21

Both of them stepped onto the gangway, clad to the nines in black suits, the type that would dissolve invisibly into any corporate cocktail reception. Yet beneath the fancy veneer, they were armed to the teeth.

I trudged along, a black traveling bag slung over my shoulder filled with guns and spare magazines. It was weighty, and my shoulder warned me of the reality we were stepping into. I wasn't about to take any chances, not with Ruth alone out there.

"Where do we start looking, boss?" Luke asked, his hand resting on the gun at his hip. Years as a cop had inculcated the habit. Always prepared. Always on edge.

"I have no idea," I admitted. I had been waiting for the question, but no answers had come to me. "What do you suggest?"

Luke's eyes continued to scan the streets ahead as he walked beside me. "If she's smart-and we know she is-she wouldn't go somewhere isolated. She'd head for a crowded place where she thinks no one will make a move on her."
