BANG! BANG!

The shots boomed out like thunderclaps, coursing a river of adrenaline in my veins. Luke and I dropped instinctively, pressing ourselves against the marble floor of the hotel lobby. The opulent surroundings meant nothing now. Blood was about to be spilled.

I gritted my teeth. Ruth knew nothing of what she was into. Run, vanish within the city-she had no idea how deep this went. It wasn't about her anymore-it never was.

The woman at the reception desk was still frozen, eyes darting toward the glass entrance as if salvation might come waltzing through the doors.

"Get down, now!" I barked at her.

She took off, her eyes wide in surprise, but I wasn't inclined to repeat myself. If she wanted to catch a crossfire, that was her problem.

Luke swore softly. "Frank, what's the score here?"

"Enough," I growled. "It's an upscale hotel. Not exactly notorious for violence, but I hardly think that mattered to whoever let off those shots."
