Ruth Lee's POV

If there was a silver lining to what Frank Xia had just said to me, I was still trying to figure out what it was. The words cut, but I refused to let them sink too deep.

"Good thing you didn't, then," I muttered, my tone laced with as much defiance as I could muster.

Frank's eyes narrowed, and he relaxed back against the wall with a careless indifference that raised my hackles. "I'm not that desperate," he said flatly, his voice cold.

"Yeah, sure, I bet you've got them falling over themselves when you walk down the street, right?" I returned, crossing my arms over my chest as if to protect myself from the chill of his manner.

He didn't bat an eye. "Right," he said shortly.

The nerve of this guy.

I looked around the room for any other distraction from the tension. "Nice place you got here," I said, heavy with sarcasm. "Esther told me this place would get me what I needed. Whatever that means."
