GETTING RUTH OUT
The faces were familiar, sure. But it was what was in their hands that stopped my heart cold.
Frank Xia and Luke lurched forward as one, weapons down at their sides, taut and watchful as silenced predators. I stumbled backward, falling into my room, as my shaking hand reached for the door. The door was roughly pushed open before I could shut it.
Frank stepped forward, his face impassive, but his actions spoke volumes. He had pushed the door, and the look in his eyes told me he wasn't here to chat.
"Leave me alone!" I yelled, my voice cracking under the weight of my fear. "What the hell do you want from me?
Frank didn't answer. Instead, he glanced at Luke, who seemed to understand the unspoken command. It was clear Frank wasn't in the mood to handle me gently, not after the mess I'd apparently dragged them into.
