The alternate world behaves like a game world. Anyone who can enter this world is called the Awakener, and they will receive a system that gives them Innate Skills and lets them choose a class where they can choose their path.

Me? I am just a normal awakener who tries to survive the world. Sadly, the world is going to end.

"Oh, I wish I could go back and try harder. Maybe I can make a difference."

"Your wish is granted."

"What?"

I look around and see who is talking to me. I stop when I see a massive woman appear next to me. She has green skin, eyes, and hair.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Gaia. I am the avatar of the planet. As you can see, humanity is gone, and that means I will soon be dead. I don't want that. However, we can change that. You, Lucas, shall be the one preventing that from happening."

"What do you mean?"

"I shall send you into the past."

I look at her in shock and say.

"Are you serious?"

"Yes."

"Why me? I am an average Joe and someone who does not have anything under my name that is worth noting."

"That might be true. However, you have one thing the other doesn't have. You never break a promise, Lucas."

"What? I break my promise all the time! I broke a promise to kill someone. I broke my promise to rescue someone. I broke my promise to get something I want!"

"But you never break the promise that you create for yourself."

"What?"

"Once you make a promise to yourself, you will not break that promise. How long will it take for you to heal that child, Lucas?"

A flash of memory appeared in my mind. A memory of a child crying because her mother was suffering from poison. A memory of me going through a dungeon searching for that potion ingredient. A memory of me killing all the people who steal the potions.

And a memory of the bright smile that child gives me when I heal her mother.

"How long, Lucas?"

"Three months."

"For three months, you suffer because you want to help the child and her mother. You know and are close to them, but any other person will not suffer that great length for someone, not their blood relatives."

"They might not be my blood relatives, but they are more family than my blood relatives."

"Then what about the man you help get out of the dungeon when the others run away? You give him a promise you will get the two of you out, and you go to such lengths to achieve that. You are someone who will always fulfill the promise you made yourself, and you promise to save the world if you can go back."

I stay silent for a few seconds before saying.

"Why help me now? Why can't you help us before the alternate world invades us?"

"Who says I don't help you? You know the Sky Tower, Lucas?"

"Yeah. They are towers that appear around the world. They are like the Alternate World. However, unlike the alternate world, the tower has floors instead of a portal to a dungeon, a pocket dimension full of monsters. The monsters in the tower are more powerful but do not drop any mana core that we use as energy sources. The tower also does not give you a big reward like the dungeon in the alternate world after you conquer it."

"That is my creation."

"Why do you make that?"

"Because I want to help. The tower serves as a test for me to see if someone is worthy to wield the weapons inside the tower. Sadly, no one wants to fight past the tenth floor. When I want to offer more help, the Gods from the Alternate World have already wormed their way through Earth and prevented me from doing anything. The only reason why I can appear here is because they already left this place and picked a new world to devour."

"I see."

"You are my only hope. Will you help me, Lucas?"

I rub the back of my head and say.

"Why are you asking me that? You know the answer. I already made a promise and don't intend to break it. If you can send me back, I will do my best to make sure those bastards cannot enter our world."

"Thank you. However, beware that I cannot help you in your journey. My past self would fall asleep and could not hold the invasion when they managed to connect to the earth. I need you to enter my tower as high as possible while also cleaning the dungeon in the alternate world."

"So I need to be even more proactive than before, huh?"

Yup. However, don't worry. I shall give you my blessing to help you in your journey."

She opens her arms, and I shield my eyes from the bright light coming from her.

"Good luck, Lucas. Please save all of us."

The next thing I knew, a bright light covered my entire vision, and I was lying on my bed. The bed that I have since forgotten. This is my old bedroom—the bedroom where I am still a normal person, not an awakener.

I blink for a second when I see a familiar blue screen appear in front of me.

Ah, the system from the Alternate Worlds. The reason why an awakener appears in this world. That is one of the weaknesses the Gods from the Alternate Worlds cannot prevent. To invade this world, the rule of their worlds will leak, and that leak grants us this system.

This is the thing that makes them so powerful and the key to humanity's ascension to become something that can defeat the Gods from Alternate Worlds.

Sadly, because of greed, they fight each other to monopolize the dungeon in the Alternate Worlds to get the sweet loot. I need to conquer the dungeons and even visit the worlds of those Gods before they can reach Earth. I need to sneak past the guard who ensures no one conquers their dungeons. It will be hard but doable.

I shake my head and say.

I am among the people who don't have any innate ability. Without it, I have a hard time leveling up. However, it has changed, huh?

I press it and read the new panel.
