At 13, Kaki reaches his breaking point. The years of rejection, pain, and hatred have shattered something inside him.
One evening, he sits alone in the kitchen, staring at a metal spoon. He heats it over the stove until it glows red, the heat radiating into his trembling hands. His mind is a storm of thoughts:
"She loves Kahi, not me. I'm nothing. I don't deserve anything. But… this isn't her fault. Is it?"
He walks into Kahi's room, kneeling beside her bed. She sleeps peacefully, her face a picture of innocence. His heart pounds as he holds the spoon just above her foot, the heat pulsing against her skin.
For a moment, he hesitates. His mind screams at him to stop, but his body feels disconnected, driven by a darker force. The spoon hovers for a second longer, then falls to the floor with a loud clang.
Kahi stirs, waking to see her brother trembling, tears streaming down his face. She doesn't understand what's happening, but she reaches out, placing her small hand on his cheek.
Kaki collapses to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably. In that moment, he realizes two things:
