Time pressed on, and for Kaki and his sister Kahi, nothing changed. Their lives were a cycle of quiet suffering, but one day, two unexpected presences entered their world: a stray dog and a revelation about a second sister.
Her name was Kashi. She wasn't just anyone--she was their real sister. But she believed it was the adoptive mother's fault that Kaki and
Kahi had been taken away.
What she didn't know-or refused to see-was that it wasn't true. The siblings overheard whispers in the household, piecing together the dark truth: it was their grandfather and their father who had orchestrated their separation from The mother and Kashi.
That night, as the clock struck 8:00 PM, Kaki took his newfound companion, the dog, for a run under the cold, starless sky.
"Why... why...why, God?" he muttered, his voice cracking with every word. His feet pounded against the pavement. the rhythm of his run matching the pounding in his chest. "Why is my life such a curse?"
The dog trotted beside him, silent yet faithful, the only presence in Kaki's lonely world. He stopped suddenly, catching his breath, and looked up at the heavens, his dark, tear-filled eyes searching for an answer that never came.
"I don't have anyone to talk to. I'm alone... all these feelings-they're like a dream I can't wake up from, but they also feel like a scream that never ends. This world we're living in is a sin, and I... I don't know what I want anymore. I don't want anything,
but at the same time, I want everything.
How does that make sense?"
His voice grew louder, trembling with the weight of his emotions.
"I try to be good, but l'm not the best. I want to be the best, but I keep crashing. At school, I'm good enough, but I'Il never be great. At home, I try to succeed, but it feels like I'm always being watched, judged. I make mistakes, and it's like there's a devil inside me-pulling me
twisting me into someone, don't want to be. I can't control my anger, my need for love, my hunger for something... but what is it? What do I evenwant?"
His words echoed into the emptiness around him, swallowed by the indifferent night.
A voice spoke in Kaki's mind- his own, but darker, colder. It whispered cruel truths he'd tried to ignore: You're not enough. You'll never be enough. It's not the world-it's you
You're broken, Kaki.
He sank to his knees, the dog circling back to nuzzle his side. Kaki reached out to stroke the animal's fur, finding a small comfort in its warmth, but it wasn't enough to silence the storm within him.
"Why am I so dumb? Why am I so stupid?" he choked out. "Why can't I be a good brother? Or a good son? Is it me? Is it... this person inside me? Is it my name? Why...why...why?"
Tears streamed down his face hot and relentless, as he clenched his fists against the ground.
"I want to die," he whispered, his voice barely audible, "but I can't. Not for her sake. For my sister's sake, I can't. I want to break, but I can't. Not for her sake.. "
He looked up again, his eyes dark like the night, filled with a rage and despair he couldn't contain. His breath came in short, painful gasps as he screamed into the void:
"WHY, WHY, WHY?"
His cry faded into the stillness, leaving only the sound of the dog's soft whines and the distant hum of the world carrying on without him.
In that moment, Kaki realized he wasn't just fighting the world or the people who had wronged him. He was fighting himself, and he wasn't sure who would win.
AND HE CURSE THE WORDS:
"WHY, WHY, WHY, ME??"
