Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Descent into Madness

The van screeched around another corner, tires smoking as it slid on the wet asphalt. Li An's breath came in sharp, shallow gasps, her heart pounding in her chest. They were no longer just running from the shadows of the past—now, they were running for their lives. The streetlights streaked by like ghosts, their yellow glow barely cutting through the thick darkness of the night. Every passing second felt like an eternity, each heartbeat echoing in her ears.

"How much farther?" Li An asked, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to stay calm. She gripped the seat tightly, the vibrations from the engine running through her body.

Zhang Xian's eyes remained fixed on the road ahead, his expression tight, jaw clenched. "Not far," he replied, his voice tense but controlled. "We just need to get to the safe house. Once we're there, we can figure out what to do next."

Li An nodded, though a deep unease gnawed at her. Safe house? Was there really a safe place? Or were they only delaying the inevitable?

She glanced over at him, her eyes narrowing. "What exactly is this 'safe house,' Zhang Xian? What makes it any safer than where we are now?"

Zhang Xian shot her a quick, sideways glance, his lips pressing into a thin line. "It's a place I've used before, a place that's off the grid. It's temporary, but it'll buy us some time."

"Time for what?" Li An shot back, her frustration bubbling over. "Time to do what, exactly? Run forever? Hide from whatever this is?"

His hands tightened on the steering wheel, but he said nothing. His silence was almost more suffocating than the danger pressing in from all sides. The truth was, Li An wasn't sure how much longer she could keep running, how much longer she could keep pretending that everything would be okay as long as they kept moving.

The van jolted as it hit a pothole, and Li An's body lurched forward, her hands instinctively reaching out for something to steady herself. When she looked up, she saw the headlights of another car in the rearview mirror. The distance between them was shrinking.

Her breath caught in her throat.

"Zhang Xian, they're gaining on us!"

His expression didn't change. "I know."

The van swerved left, narrowly avoiding a traffic light that was about to turn red. Li An's stomach lurched as they raced through the intersection. The car behind them followed without hesitation.

She could hear the faint, distinct sound of tires squealing, the faint sound of their pursuers closing in.

"What do we do?" she whispered urgently, her voice edged with panic.

Zhang Xian's eyes darted to the rearview mirror, then to the side streets ahead. His mind was calculating, assessing their options in an instant.

"Hold on," he muttered, and with that, he slammed his foot down on the accelerator, pushing the van to its limits.

Li An gripped the seat harder, her heart in her throat as the van lurched forward. They veered off the main road and into a narrower alleyway. The tires screeched against the pavement as they took the turn, the alley's walls closing in on them. The van bounced over a curb, sending a shockwave of jarring movement through their bodies.

She barely had time to register the fact that they had entered a dead-end alley before Zhang Xian jerked the wheel again, bringing the van to a stop just inches from the brick wall.

"Get out," he said, his voice low and commanding. "Now."

Li An's pulse raced. "What are you doing?"

Zhang Xian didn't answer. Instead, he flung open the door and jumped out, slamming it shut behind him. Li An hesitated for only a moment before following suit, her feet hitting the cold pavement.

They were trapped, but Zhang Xian wasn't panicking. His eyes darted around the alley, scanning the surroundings with the alertness of a man who had been in this situation too many times to count.

"Where are we going?" Li An asked, her voice tight with urgency.

"Follow me," he said, and without waiting for her to respond, he took off, leading her through the narrow passageways between buildings.

The alleyways seemed to stretch on forever, twisting and turning as they ran deeper into the heart of the city. Li An's breath came in ragged gasps, her legs burning with the effort, but she didn't dare stop. Every step was a reminder of the danger behind them, the threat that was closing in with every passing second.

At one point, Zhang Xian pulled her into a shadowed doorway, pushing her against the wall as they crouched low. They both held their breath as the sound of approaching footsteps grew louder. Li An's pulse hammered in her ears as the footsteps passed by, and she felt her whole body tense, ready to bolt at the slightest sound.

After what felt like an eternity, the footsteps faded. Zhang Xian slowly straightened, his eyes scanning the area around them.

"We lost them for now," he said, his voice low but steady. "But we're not safe yet."

Li An wiped the sweat from her brow, feeling the adrenaline still coursing through her veins. "I don't understand. Why are they after you? What do they want?"

Zhang Xian didn't respond immediately, his eyes darkening as though the question itself was something he had hoped she would never ask. Finally, he spoke, his voice barely above a whisper.

"They want me dead. And anyone who gets in their way."

Li An's heart sank. She had known that Zhang Xian's past was dangerous, but this—this was something else entirely. There was no way to outrun this kind of threat. No way to hide.

"So what do we do now?" she asked, her voice barely audible.

Zhang Xian exhaled slowly, his gaze softening for a brief moment. "We fight. And we find the answers."

The alley around them seemed darker now, the shadows longer. The world felt like it was closing in, and yet, Li An knew that there was no turning back. They had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.
