Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: Revelations

The air in the abandoned building was stale, thick with dust and the scent of decaying wood. Li An leaned against the cracked wall, her mind racing, trying to process the fragments of truth that Zhang Xian had just revealed. She wanted to ask more questions, but the answers felt too elusive, like shadows slipping through her fingers. She wasn't sure whether she was scared or angry—maybe both—but what she did know was that this was only the beginning.

Zhang Xian had pulled out a few more files from the compartment in the crate, his fingers flipping through the pages quickly, his brow furrowed in concentration. The photographs were still on the floor, but Li An didn't want to look at them anymore. The people in those images were part of a world she didn't want to be part of.

"We can't stay here long," Zhang Xian said suddenly, his voice low but urgent. "We need to move, now."

Li An looked up, startled by the force of his tone. "What's happening?"

Zhang Xian's gaze flickered to the window, where the faint glow of streetlights from a nearby alley could be seen. "They're closing in. I don't know how, but they've found us. We need to leave, before it's too late."

A cold shiver ran down Li An's spine. "Who are they, Zhang Xian? Who's chasing us?"

Zhang Xian didn't respond immediately. He grabbed the files and stuffed them into a black backpack, securing it with practiced hands. His movements were fast, almost mechanical, as if he'd done this a thousand times before. When he finally turned to face her, his eyes were hard, the exhaustion that had been weighing on him still visible but now replaced with something more urgent—determination.

"It doesn't matter who they are," he said, his voice sharp. "What matters is that they will stop at nothing to find us. And if they do, they'll make sure we don't live to tell anyone about what we know."

Li An swallowed hard, her throat suddenly dry. The weight of his words hung in the air like a cloud, suffocating her. She knew it was bad, but this… this was worse than she had imagined. The danger was no longer a shadow; it was real. They were being hunted.

"What do we do?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She wasn't sure if she wanted an answer or if she was just hoping he would tell her what to do.

Zhang Xian paused for a moment, his eyes scanning the room before he spoke. "We go to the backup location." He didn't elaborate further, but his tone left no room for argument. "It's the only place left where we might be able to regroup. After that, we'll figure out how to stop this."

Li An nodded, though she didn't feel any more certain. The plan sounded simple enough—too simple, almost. But what other choice did they have? The world outside was a maze of danger, and each step they took was one closer to the edge.

"Lead the way," she said quietly.

Zhang Xian picked up the backpack and led her through the building, his movements quick but cautious. He had a sense of urgency that Li An hadn't seen in him before, and it was both comforting and terrifying. It meant he was finally acknowledging the stakes, that they were running out of time.

They exited the warehouse through a side door, stepping into the cold night air. The city was eerily quiet, the streets empty except for the distant hum of traffic. Zhang Xian moved swiftly, guiding Li An through the darkened streets, always looking over his shoulder, always alert.

As they turned onto another alley, Li An felt a sudden sense of unease. Something wasn't right. The silence was too deep, too complete. She could feel her heartbeat pounding in her chest, and for a moment, she thought she heard footsteps behind them—slow, deliberate steps, like someone was following them.

She glanced at Zhang Xian, but he didn't seem to notice. He was focused, eyes fixed ahead, his expression hard as steel. "Keep moving," he said without looking at her. "We don't have time."

They reached an intersection, and Zhang Xian paused. He checked the alley to his left, then turned sharply right, pulling Li An with him.

Li An's stomach twisted. Something was wrong. She could feel it in her gut. She didn't know what it was, but she knew they were being watched.

"Zhang Xian—"

But before she could finish her sentence, a loud crash echoed from behind them. They both spun around in unison, but it was too late. Figures emerged from the shadows—three men, all wearing dark clothing and carrying weapons. Li An's breath caught in her throat as she realized they were surrounded.

Zhang Xian's eyes narrowed, and for the first time since this whole nightmare began, he didn't look afraid. He looked ready.

"Run," he hissed, pushing Li An toward a nearby building. "Get to the roof. I'll hold them off."

Li An froze, staring at him, wide-eyed. "No. We can't—"

"There's no time to argue." His voice was cold, almost harsh. "Do it."

With no other choice, Li An turned and ran. She didn't look back, but she could hear the sound of gunshots ringing in the air, followed by the harsh scrape of metal on concrete as Zhang Xian drew a weapon from his coat. The sound made her heart race even faster. She ran harder, pushing her legs to move faster, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

When she reached the building, she climbed up the fire escape, praying that she wasn't too late. She reached the roof just as another shot rang out from below. She ducked behind the edge of the building, breathing heavily as she waited for Zhang Xian to catch up.

The seconds stretched into eternity. The world felt like it was closing in around her, and all she could think about was whether Zhang Xian was okay.

Suddenly, there was a loud crash as the door to the roof burst open. Li An whipped around, her heart stopping for a moment. But it wasn't Zhang Xian—someone else had made it to the roof.

Li An's pulse quickened. She was trapped.

And the worst part? She had no idea who to trust anymore.
