Shuan peered down from the window to observe the situation in the alley.
Only a few zombies were wandering about. He refrained from shooting them to avoid attracting the nearby horde with the sound of gunfire.
"Major, should we still head to the mansion after the horde near it disperses on its own?" Shuan asked.
"If the horde behind us doesn't come after us, we won't go there. Staying here for a while will suffice. After some time, we'll check the situation outside and decide if we should return to the clinic. After all, our cars and medical supplies are there," Major Kyle replied.
It was already noon when Major Kyle ordered the team members to take out the compressed biscuits they carried in their small backpacks and eat them.
After finishing the biscuits, Sylas took a mouthful of water from his bottle and walked toward the window, where Shuan was already standing.
"It seems the zombies didn't chase us all the way here," Sylas said.
"Yes, but the concentration of zombies on Maple Street has already exceeded our expectations. We don't even know if we can make it back there. If we can't, we'll have no choice but to abandon the cars and medical supplies and leave this area through another road," Shuan said, munching on the compressed biscuits slowly.
Sylas frowned after hearing Shuan. He didn't mind abandoning the cars, as there were plenty of abandoned vehicles on the road they could use to drive back. The real issue was the medical supplies.
Inside the room, the team members leaned against the walls or lay on the floor, resting for a while.
An hour passed when one of the soldiers asked, "If the horde of zombies near the mansion doesn't clear, what should we do? Are we going to spend the night here? We can't go back to the clinic either."
Major Kyle pinched the bridge of his nose and replied firmly, "Then we'll clear the zombies near the mansion as quickly as possible. Before the horde behind us can catch up, we'll leave through that road. As for the medical supplies—so long as we're alive and well, we'll find a way to retrieve them."
Everyone agreed with Major Kyle. It was their only option.
"Major, since we can't see the situation near the mansion from here, let me go down and take a look," Shuan said, picking up his gun.
"Let me go too," the other soldiers aslo volunteered.
"Two people are enough. Shuan and Sylas will go," Major Kyle said in a tone that left no room for argument.
"Yes, Major," the soldiers replied in unison.
Turning to Sylas, Major Kyle said, "I see that you have good combat experience, which is why I'm choosing you and Shuan. Both of you are skilled fighters with sharp reflexes. I want you to head down and assess the situation. If you encounter any zombies, avoid using your guns to prevent attracting others nearby. Take them down silently."
"Can you do that?" Major Kyle asked, his tone serious.
"Don't worry, Major. Leave it to me," Shuan responded immediately.
"I'll follow your orders, Major," Sylas said calmly.
Major Kyle smiled at them and said, "Alright, I'll leave the rest to both of you."
Shuan and Sylas didn't waste any time and immediately left the room, their teammates watching them with worried gazes.
"I saw a few zombies wandering past the alley earlier, so be careful," Shuan said to Sylas as they cautiously descended the stairs.
Sylas tightened his grip on the sharp knife in his hand and replied, "Don't worry, I'll be careful."
Once they stepped into the alley, they scanned their surroundings vigilantly before moving forward.
Shuan, who was leading the way, raised his
left hand, signaling Sylas to slow down.
A few seconds later, Shuan shot forward and plunged his sharp military knife into a zombie's head. With a 'thud' the zombie collapsed. Shuan pulled the knife out of its skull and turned to look ahead.
Just then, Sylas spotted another zombie emerging from the building nearby. Without hesitation, he rushed toward it, brandishing his knife. The zombie, sensing the human's presence, turned and bared its teeth, but Sylas didn't give it a chance to attack. He thrust his knife straight into the zombie's temple, killing it instantly. Sylas pulled out the knife just as another zombie stumbled out of the building. Without missing a beat, he kicked it down
and swiftly finished it off with his blade.
"Nice move," Shuan whispered, signaling Sylas to move forward with a gesture of his hand.
After walking a few meters, Shuan, with agile movements, quickly climbed onto one of the houses to get a better view ahead.
"There seem to be only a few zombies wandering near the mansion now, but we can't see the situation in the alley because the low roofs block the view. We'll need to go further to check," Shuan said to Sylas after climbing back down.
Sylas nodded in agreement.
They cautiously moved forward another twenty meters or so, then took a turn. There, they spotted four zombies standing near a partially damaged door in the alley, making guttural sounds.
Sylas and Shuan exchanged a glance,
nodded and tightened their grips on their knives before charging at the zombies.
Sylas lunged forward and drove his knife deep into the skull of the first zombie, sending it collapsing to the ground with a low groan. Without hesitation, he spun around and kicked another zombie off balance, following up with a swift stab to its head to finish it off.
Shuan moved with equal precision, piercing the head of one zombie before plunging it into the temple of another. Both collapsed without much resistance.
After taking care of the zombies, they turned their attention toward the building. Sylas stepped forward cautiously toward the partially damaged door to see what was inside.
It was dark inside, and the dim light made it difficult for them to see clearly. However, they could hear low whimpering sounds coming from the building.
