Chapter 8 - A blast from the past

Lucinda woke up to the warm sunlight streaming through the windows of Des's bedroom. She stretched her arms and yawned, feeling the softness of the bed and the comfort of the cozy room. She looked over at Des, who was still fast asleep, and smiled.

She gently got out of bed and began her morning routine. She walked over to the window and pulled back the curtains, letting the sunlight flood the room. She took a deep breath, feeling the fresh air fill her lungs.

Next, she headed to the bathroom to wash her face and brush her teeth. She looked at herself in the mirror and smiled, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. She tied her hair back in a ponytail and applied a light layer of makeup.

After getting ready, Lucinda walked downstairs to the kitchen to start her day with a cup of coffee. She poured herself a cup and sat down at the table, feeling grateful for the peaceful morning and the comfort of Des's home. As she sipped her coffee, she checked her phone for any messages and planned out her day while Des slept all through ....

Chris popped again into her mind and she thought of how the familiarity came about..

Lucinda's mind wandered back to the previous year's anniversary celebration with Des. They had decided to spend a romantic weekend at a bed and breakfast in the countryside. The sun was shining, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers.

As they strolled hand in hand through the rolling hills, Lucinda couldn't help but feel grateful for their relationship. They had been together for five years, and every day with Des felt like a gift.

The evening of their anniversary, they sat down to a candlelit dinner at a quaint little restaurant in the town. Over a delicious meal, they reminisced about their time together, sharing laughter and stories.

After dinner, they decided to take a walk around the town, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. As they strolled, Lucinda suddenly stopped in front of an old antique shop.

"Des, look!" she exclaimed, pointing to an old photograph in the window.

Des followed her gaze, and his eyes widened in surprise. "Wow, that's an old picture of me!" he said, chuckling.

Lucinda's eyes scanned the photograph, taking in the details. It was an old black and white picture, showing Des standing next to a guy with a mischievous grin. They were both holding beers and wearing silly hats.

"Who's that with you?" Lucinda asked, pointing to the other guy in the picture.

Des's expression turned nostalgic. "That's my old college buddy, Chris. We had some wild times together."

Lucinda's eyes narrowed, studying the picture more closely. There was something familiar about Chris's face, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it.

As they continued their walk, Lucinda couldn't shake off the feeling that she had seen Chris before. But where?

It wasn't until they returned to their room at the bed and breakfast, and Lucinda was browsing through her phone, that the penny finally dropped. She stumbled upon a recent photo of Chris, taken when he and Des had met up for the first time in years.

Lucinda's eyes widened as she realized why Chris's face had looked so familiar. It was the same guy from the old photograph! The same mischievous grin, the same sparkling eyes.

She felt a surge of excitement, realizing that she had finally pieced together the mystery. Chris was the guy from Des's past, the one he had been friends with in college.

As she looked at the photo, Lucinda couldn't help but wonder what had happened between Des and Chris all those years ago. What had caused them to drift apart, and what had brought them back together again?

She decided to ask Des about it, but as she turned to him, she saw that he was fast asleep, a peaceful smile on his face.

Lucinda smiled, feeling grateful for the little glimpse into Des's past. She knew that she would have to wait until morning to ask him about Chris, but for now, she was content to simply watch him sleep, feeling happy and at peace.

As she drifted off to sleep herself, Lucinda's mind wandered back to the old photograph, and the story it told of Des's past. She knew that there was more to the story, and she couldn't wait to hear it.

The next morning, Lucinda woke up early, feeling refreshed and eager to start the day. She turned to Des, who was still fast asleep, and gently shook him awake.

"Hey, sleepyhead," she said, smiling. "I want to ask you something."

Des rubbed his eyes, yawning. "What is it?" he asked, his voice groggy.

Lucinda propped herself up on her elbow, looking at him intently. "I want to know more about Chris," she said. "What happened between you two?"

Des's expression turned thoughtful, and he sat up in bed, rubbing his chin. "Ah, Chris," he said, a faraway look in his eyes. "We were inseparable in college. We shared a room, studied together, and even started a band together."

Lucinda's eyes widened in surprise. "A band? What kind of music did you play?"

Des chuckled. "We were a terrible rock band. But we had a blast doing it. We even played a few gigs around campus."

Lucinda laughed. "I can imagine," she said. "But what happened? Why did you two drift apart?"

Des's expression turned serious, and he looked down at his hands. "We had a falling out," he said. "It was a stupid argument, but it escalated into something bigger. We stopped talking, and eventually, we lost touch."

Lucinda's eyes filled with empathy. "I'm sorry," she said. "That must have been tough for you."

Des nodded. "It was. But I'm glad we're back in touch now. Chris is a good guy, and I'm happy to have him back in my life
