Chapter One

Running from Fate

Nora's POV

The night was dark, so dark that I felt my breath giving out. As I ran barefoot through the woods, my heart hammering against my ribs. Twigs snapped beneath my feet, and the cold wind bit at my exposed skin, but I didn't stop. I couldn't.

Behind me, a deep, commanding voice cut through the darkness.

"Nora! Stop running! You can't escape us!"

Beta Grey.

Panic surged through me at the sound of his voice—rough, edged with authority. He wasn't alone. Heavy footfalls pounded the forest floor, closing in. My lungs burned as I pushed myself harder, dodging low-hanging branches and leaping over exposed roots. I had only one goal—getting as far away from them as possible.

I would not be taken back.

Not to them.

I veered off the path and pressed my back against a thick tree, forcing myself to stay silent despite my ragged breaths. Peeking around the trunk, I saw Grey step into view, his sharp eyes scanning the darkness.

"She couldn't have gone far," he muttered. "Fan out and find her. The Alphas want her to be brought Back."

The Alphas.

A shudder ran through me. Keal and Killian. The twin Alphas. My mates.

Fate had to be playing some kind of cruel joke.

I'd heard the stories—the whispers of their brutality, the way they treated their mates as possessions rather than equals. No wolf in their right mind would want to be bound to them. Yet the bond that tethered me to them was unbreakable. No matter how much I wanted to deny it, my wolf, Lara, felt the connection.

But I didn't trust them.

And I sure as hell wasn't going to let them claim me.

I sucked in a breath, willing my shaking hands to steady. I needed to get out of here. I counted the seconds until Grey and his men moved deeper into the woods. Once I was sure the path was clear, I crept forward, my steps careful and silent.

We should shift, Lara whispered in the back of my mind. We'd be faster.

No. I shoved her down, forcing her back. The last time I let her take control, everything had gone to hell. I couldn't afford that mistake again.

I had almost reached the clearing when the air around me changed. A sudden chill crawled up my spine, and the hair on my arms rose.

Instinct screamed at me to turn back.

But before I could, a figure emerged from the shadows.

A white wolf.

I froze.

My pulse roared in my ears as my gaze locked onto the massive creature standing just ahead, its piercing silver eyes gleaming—like it had been expecting me all along.

Killian.

Before I could react, another wolf stepped from the darkness behind me, his midnight-black fur blending seamlessly into the night.

Keal.

I clenched my fists. I was surrounded.

Slowly, I stepped back, my mind racing for an escape. But before I could move, both wolves shifted. Their transformation was effortless—bones realigning, muscles shifting—until two towering figures stood before me.

Killian, the older of the two, exuded quiet dominance. His silver eyes studied me with an unreadable expression, his dark hair tousled from the shift. Beside him, Keal was the opposite—sharp-edged and intense, his black eyes burning with something I couldn't name.

I hated how perfect they looked. How inhumanly beautiful they were.

"Nora." Killian's voice was smooth, almost calm. But I wasn't fooled.

I took another step back, my body coiled and ready to run. "Stay away from me."

Keal's lips curled into a smirk. "Why do you keep running, little mate? You know we'll always catch you. You know you will always belong to us"

His voice sent a shiver through me, and I hated that my body reacted at all.

"Go to hell," I spat.

Killian sighed, as if I were nothing more than an inconvenience. "Beta Grey."

The moment he spoke, Grey stepped out from behind me. I hadn't even heard him approach.

"Take her."

No!

I spun to flee, but I wasn't fast enough. Grey lunged, his arms closing around me like an iron vice. I thrashed wildly, kicking and clawing, but he was stronger.

A low growl rumbled inside me, deep and primal. Lara pushed forward, furious, demanding to be freed.

I had fought her for too long.

This time, I let her take over.

A sharp pain tore through me as the shift began—bones snapping and reshaping. My vision blurred, my senses sharpening as fur spread across my skin. In seconds, I was on all fours, my breathing ragged as Lara took full control.

Grey barely had time to react before lara struck.

Lara lunged, our teeth sinking into his shoulder. He cried out, stumbling back, but Lara didn't stop. Lara knocked him to the ground, claws raking across his chest.

Enough! I tried to regain control, but Lara was wild, relentless.

She turned her attention to the twins.

Keal and Killian stood still, watching us. Not afraid. Not even surprised.

That only made Lara angrier.

With a vicious snarl, she lunged.

But she never reached them.

Killian moved faster than I could comprehend. In the blink of an eye, he struck, shifting mid-air. His massive white wolf slammed into us, the impact sending us crashing to the ground.

Pain exploded through me. The air ripped from my lungs. Lara whimpered, her strength fading under Killian's weight.

I felt the shift pulling me back, my body losing its hold on my wolf form. Within seconds, I was human again—weak and vulnerable beneath him.

I tried to move, but Killian didn't budge. He was now in his Human form. His foot pressed against my chest, pinning me to the ground with effortless strength.

"Are you done fighting, little mate?" His voice was dangerously soft.

I glared up at him, my breathing labored. "I hate you. I whisper"

His lips twitched, as if amused. "You'll learn to hate us less."

My vision swam. Darkness crept in.

And then everything faded.
