Luca Vitale was outside the prison where he was for 13 years, the day he had waited arrived..... felt the wind hit his face, you could say that he is finally breathing fresh air.
Vitale looked up and remembered those bad moments when the judge lifted the hammer and sentenced him to 15 years in prison. He remembered his anguish and despair.
At 33 years old, Vitale had matured quite a bit, he became a colder and more calculating guy. His father came to mind at times, remembering him fondly. But The Mafioso Don Bellini also came to mind. I felt a little resentment....—You'll pay me damn Bellini —I whispered in a moment of crisis.
After 13 long years everything had changed, he did not have his friends from before, much less family members, the only family member he had had been murdered.
Vitale was forced to make a decision, he had to find a way to improve himself. I had to start from scratch, but I didn't know where to go..... I was disoriented and lost. In his eyes you could see the look of a man who lost everything.
The streets felt full of life, listening to the cars again and seeing the sky made him feel pleasure. A smile reflected on his face.
Vitale remembered an old friend "Domenico".
When he remembered it he felt a feeling of sadness. He still remembered the old house where Domenico lived, not having anyone Vitale imagined that it would be a good idea to visit his old friend, the only thing he hoped was that he wouldn't move there.
Vitale decided to move forward and headed towards the house where Domenico previously lived. Every step he took was very strange, normally he would be walking down the prison hallway. While walking he stopped to read several newspapers, he wanted to analyze what had happened to the Bellini family. But unfortunately for him he didn't talk about it anywhere.
After a good walk he had arrived at his friend's old house, he remembered when they met there, although it was already a little deteriorated. He sighed and knocked on the door, hoping that the one who will be at the door will be his friend Domenico.
However, no one would have the door. Despite that, he insisted once again, played again, the sound echoed in the silence of the neighborhood. After a few moments that seemed eternal, the door slowly opened. An older woman appeared, her hair gray and tied up in a discarded bun and a look that expressed surprise and confusion
—Can I help you? —She asked, frowning.
—Sorry to bother you, does Domenico live here?— dared to ask. His hope was intact, the only one who could help him at that moment was his old friend.
The woman shook her head, letting her hair fall.
—Domenico you say? Yes, he lives here, who are you? —I look at it from bottom to top.
—Really? It's good to hear that, could I tell you that someone wants to see it? —Vitale felt saved.
The woman turned —Domenico! They are looking for you! —Scream.
Vitale just waited for Domenico to appear and so it was, Domenico slowly peeked out until he came out completely.
—How are you, who are you? —analyzed him and something about him seemed familiar.
—Domenico! It's me —Vitale responded with a smile on his face.
Silence invaded Domenico, who after that managed to recognize him, a great nostalgia was present.
—I can't believe it, Luca is you! —I let out a smile.
—Yes Domenico, it's me Luca Vitale. —He answered him.
Domenico and Vitale shook hands like old times.
—I thought you were still in prison —You are surprised to see him standing there —I remember that you were sentenced to 15 years and it was only 13.
—That's right, but for good behavior they released me before..... I just left and I have nothing, it's a start from 0 and I need your help. —expressed himself in a sincere way.
Domenico still didn't believe that Vitale was there with him.
—I can't believe you came out —Domenico said, his voice shaking slightly —.How do you feel?
—I'm....." —Forcibly said —What happened to you Domenico? What happened to Bellini?.
Domenico lowered his head, it didn't do him any good to remember his criminal past.
—I left that world a long time ago, I think about ten years ago. —He seemed more serious and regretful —Seeing that Bellini only used his men for his benefit and when we made a mistake he was able to kill us.
—I see you..thed a good decision —He put his hand on Domenico's shoulder —I realized that too..it's a shame I did it late.
Silence took over the place..., remembering that gangster that Vitale held a grudge against him.
Domenico looked up, a sea of emotions were present in his eyes.
—Sometimes he asked me if I really managed to get out.....—he confessed, his voice barely a whisper.
—That man ruined many lives..... And what makes me most angry is that my father paid for something he never did —Vitale's voice broke —Bellini is one of the worst bigwigs in town.
Domenico remembered that Vitale's father was no longer with them..., this made him feel bad, although they were already grown up, they were persecuted for their past.
—And now what will you do? —I ask with a mixture of concern and curiosity —You have a lot to recover.
Vitale looked at his friend —I have to start over, I don't know what I will work on, but what I am very clear about is that Bellini will pay me for it.
Domenico felt a knot in his stomach upon hearing Vitale's words.
—I can't imagine how difficult —had to be for you Domenico said, his voice soft —But you can't let that rage consume you.
—And what do you want me to do? —Responded intensely —Let Bellini continue getting his way? I can't just forget it.
Domenico observed his resentment and tried to lead him down a good and legal path.
—I understand that at this moment you don't have any family, if you like you could stay here for a while until you can find a good place —He said empathetically —And if you want you can work in the place where I am currently.
—Really? Sometimes I don't like depending on others. —Letting out your pride —What are you currently working on?
—I am a pizza delivery man —I answer with complete confidence —Of course I don't have such a high salary..... but it's enough for me.
Vitale looked at him curiously.
—Pizza delivery man? It doesn't sound that interesting.
Domenico shrugged with a smile.
—Yes, it may not be, but it allows me to meet people and enjoy the fresh air. Plus, there's always something new in every delivery.
—How what? Vitale asked, intrigued in spite of himself.
—I once delivered a pizza to a guy who was dressed like a superhero in the middle of a party. I couldn't stop laughing! —Domenico— laughed. Those little things make it worth it.
Vitale felt a slight smile appear on his face. He found the image of the superhero absurd and funny.
—I can't believe that really happens —He said, trying to hide his amusement.
—Life is hard. But it is also full of fun moments.
Vitale thought a little, he remembered Domenico's parents. It seemed strange not to see them.
—By the way Domenico. And your parents? —Curiosity took over him.
—My parents moved to another city a few years ago. Since then I stayed with this house...But I'm not alone, the lady who helped you at the beginning is my grandmother, she came to live with me after having some financial problems. It's my company if you could say so.
Vitale was surprised by that. Everything had changed, talking to his friend from years ago was making him feel better, even though Domenico apparently overcame his criminal life from the past. Will Vitale follow the same path?
