Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Familiar Face

The training grounds hummed with activity as students prepared for their next challenge. Instructors moved between groups, pairing individuals based on their potential compatibility. Dante stood on the sidelines, watching as names were called, a flicker of anticipation tightening his chest.

"Instructor Kai is being thorough," Ethan muttered beside him, crossing his arms. "Wonder who you'll get this time."

"Ista Valen," Instructor Hanes announced, his voice cutting through the chatter.

Dante's head snapped up at the name. A young woman with flowing dark hair and piercing green eyes stepped forward. She carried herself with a quiet confidence, her movements deliberate yet graceful. It wasn't the first time he had seen her.

As she approached, Dante recognized her immediately. They had crossed paths before, in the library and once during a sparring demonstration. Her sharp wit and inquisitive nature had left an impression.

"So, we meet again, Dante," Ista said, a small smirk playing on her lips.

"Ista Valen," Dante replied, his tone curious. "I didn't know you were still in the beginner ranks."

"I'm not," she said, tilting her head. "But I heard Instructor Hanes was putting together a promising team, and I asked to join. Looks like I'll be working with you."

Ethan raised an eyebrow but didn't comment, simply giving Dante a knowing look before stepping away to let them talk.

"Why me?" Dante asked, genuinely curious.

Ista shrugged. "Call it curiosity. You're interesting, and I think we could both benefit from working together. Plus, I've seen how you fight. You're good. Just need some refinement."

Her words were straightforward, but Dante could sense there was more beneath her calm exterior.

Instructor Hanes clapped his hands, calling for the groups to gather. "Now that everyone has a partner, let's see how well you can handle the first challenge!"

The students moved to an open training ring. The task was simple: retrieve a glowing orb from the center while evading a barrage of attacks from automated constructs. The constructs, a blend of ancient designs powered by modern technology, hummed to life as the first pair stepped forward.

"Looks easy enough," Ista said, watching the display.

Dante frowned. "Looks deceptive. Those constructs are faster than they appear."

When their turn came, Ista took the lead, her movements fluid and precise. Dante followed closely, covering her as the constructs unleashed a volley of energy bolts.

"On your left!" Ista called, ducking under a beam while deflecting another with a small shield.

Dante leaped forward, his blade flashing as he disabled one of the constructs. The orb was just within reach when a construct aimed directly at Ista's blind spot.

Without hesitation, Dante lunged, pulling her out of the way just as the bolt struck the ground where she had been standing.

Ista looked up at him, surprise flickering in her eyes. "Thanks."

"Don't mention it," Dante said, extending his hand. Together, they reached for the orb and completed the task.

As they exited the ring, Instructor Kai gave an approving nod. "Good teamwork. Keep it up."

Ista smirked. "Not bad, Dante. Maybe this partnership will work out after all."

Dante couldn't help but smile. For the first time since joining the academy, he felt like he was beginning to find his place—and maybe, just maybe, his team.
