Chapter 46 - 46

Groundskeeping is good for—what is the polite way to say this?—creepy loners with few ties to friends or family. Even a Garou consumed by his Rage won't draw too much notice, but it's also physically demanding. You'd have to be strong and quick to do those jobs well, and it's not all mindless untrained labor: snow removal and general maintenance around sensitive equipment requires finesse.

The best way to hunt for this sort of work is online, so you walk to the nearest library. Forbes Library is a sprawling Romanesque building, a 19th century castle located on a hill across from Smith College. Cast iron railings flank a manicured walkway, now dusted with snow, that takes you inside. The interior is spacious, quiet, and cool but not cold. Once you have a library card, a brief self-tour familiarizes you with the circulation desk, the freely available computers, and the media library. You boot up the first open computer.

Most places require a driver's license, but there's an assisted care facility on the bus line in the suburbs that responds to your email right away.

It's just before lunchtime by the time your bus reaches Gorsky Manor, the facility in question. It's an ugly and decrepit place, once a stately Victorian estate, now a crumbling heap that serves as both an elderly care facility and a halfway home for recovering addicts. The decaying mansion has bad vibes, but the haunted-looking assistant director you meet says that all you need to do is pass a drug test and never be alone with a client. You won't have regular hours, either: as long as you get the work done (snow blowing and defrosting in winter, weedwhacking and landscaping in summer), you'll get paid. You won't get paid well—the rate is almost insulting—but it's enough for you to live on for now. Demanding physical work, and probably not honest work—there's something wrong about this place, something crooked—but it's a job. You take the assistant director's card and promise to call him.

I want to interact with normal people: what about barista or restaurant work?

This town is full of academics, and that library was impressive. I look for library or bookstore jobs.

I want a job where I can use my brains and my hands: maybe a garage or some kind of repair shop.

I am a living weapon, and I need to keep my skills honed. I look for security work.

I want something physical that also keeps me away from people: I take the groundskeeper position at Gorsky Manor.
