As Sophia and I were walking around campus, we ran into Sophia's mother. She was a famous actress, and I had always admired her work.
But as we talked, I realized that Sophia's mother was not what I expected. She was cold, distant, and dismissive.
"Mom, this is Emily," Sophia said, trying to sound casual. "We're... together."
Sophia's mother raised an eyebrow. "Together?" she repeated. "What do you mean?"
Sophia took a deep breath. "We're in a relationship, Mom. We're dating."
Sophia's mother looked at me with disdain. "You're... a girl," she said, her voice dripping with disgust.
I felt a surge of anger, but Sophia grabbed my hand and squeezed it. "Mom, please," she said. "Just listen."
But Sophia's mother wouldn't listen. She launched into a tirade about how Sophia was throwing away her life, how she was making a mistake, and how she would regret it.
I felt a lump form in my throat as I listened to Sophia's mother. I knew that she didn't understand, that she didn't see how much Sophia and I loved each other.
As we walked away from Sophia's mother, I felt a sense of sadness. I knew that Sophia was hurting, that she was torn between her love for me and her love for her mother.
"I'm sorry," Sophia said, tears streaming down her face. "I didn't expect her to react like that."
I pulled Sophia into a hug. "It's not your fault," I said. "We'll get through this together."
But as we hugged, I couldn't help but wonder what the future held. Would Sophia's mother ever accept us? Or would we have to face her disapproval forever?
