-¡Mmmmmghhh mm mmmgh!(I'm late, I'm late!) -
I mumbled with a toothbrush in my mouth.
The sound of the alarm clock kept drilling in my ears as I ran around the apartment looking for my other shoe. All the while, of course, trying to brush my teeth without choking. That was me, Mendel, 18 years old, a random guy, somewhat overweight from my sedentary lifestyle, though considered somewhat intelligent, I was pretty average in everything else. Second semester college student, recently moved into an apartment all to myself.
-Get in the damn pants! Ow!
I stumbled and fell face first to the ground with my pants halfway down leaving me dazed for a moment, better fast forward this part.
Shortly after at school, which by the way I arrived on time, I was sitting listening to the class, as tedious as always, inviting me to get lost in my imagination, since I was a child I had always dreamed of being a hero, having fantastic adventures and an exciting life, but that could not be, those things did not exist in this world, I had to accept it, and settle for my dreams.
My days were spent between home and school. In the free time between classes, I spent time with some friends, while at home I was divided between homework and video games or some program. Occasionally I was invited to outings with my classmates, which I mostly declined with some vague excuse.
But that occasion was different, I had been thinking about getting some job, something part time to support me a little, and who knows, maybe start living on my own, after all it was my parents who paid for everything.
"Okay, let's get to work!"
Excited, but perhaps overly so, as I hadn't thought things through too much, my only plan was to walk around town to see if I had any luck finding something, either way, worst case scenario this would turn out to be just a relaxing stroll.
So I spent the whole afternoon, strolling through a good part of Puerto Marina, as its name says, a fairly populated port city, where the sea breeze blew between the buildings both colonial and modern and tourists here and there were a constant, a good place to live.
It was already starting to get dark and I didn't find what I was looking for (which to tell the truth I didn't try that hard), I was still on the street eating an ice cream cone, my only prize of the day, when suddenly I noticed something on a nearby pole.
-Mmm, what's that? -I said without taking my tongue off my ice cream.
On it was an ad that read 'Devil's Warehouse seeks shopkeeper with or without experience, Tiburcio III Street #13, interested parties please attend alone and at night'. I couldn't help but stop. Something about that ad was... odd. But it seemed very creative to me, surely a gothic store or something, and the end note, written in a twisted way with the last line extending out of the paper was perfect for not losing the theme. What kind of place was hiring at night and alone? Part of me already wanted to know. Being almost dark and with nothing to lose I decided to go to the place out of curiosity, so I took the nearest truck to get to my destination.
