Chapter 1 - CH001

"What do you mean the child isn't mine Kara? I've raised the boy for more than five years. You can't be serious with what you just said" His eyelids dropped and his eyes glowed with anger.

"I don't look like someone that's joking, Adolph. I'm damn serious. Kennedy isn't your son and I would appreciate it if you could stop referring to him as that from now on" The lady by his side replied with a stern look on her face.

Adolph took a gaze at the woman he had called his wife for five years. What was she aiming to get with the information she had just shared with him? Darting his eyes from staring at her to the little boy she held by her left hand and the luggage by her right, he couldn't come to terms with what he was being told to believe.

His eyes widened as he struggled to comprehend the situation, the little boy by her side playing with the toy in his hand, oblivious to the tension building up with his parents and he didn't want to raise his voice at his mother, for him to still not be able to.

He sighed out of frustration. Kara and he had been married for five years. Five solid years. He wasn't rich and neither was he poor. He was moderate and had been able to provide all she and their son needed for the five years they had been together, was she announcing her betrayal to him now after all these while?

"One question" Adolph's fists fastened by his side, with him clenching them to avoid hitting her on impulse from the confused state her revelation had thrown him in.

Kara hissed. The questions again. "How many more questions are you going to ask me?" She snapped, her skin frowning with disdain creeping over her face.

" Are you leaving me?" Adolph managed to mutter, his voice barely above a whisper. But he felt relieved after he had asked the impossible question that had seemed to bother him for the past minutes he stood before Kara, obstructing her and their son from leaving.

"Isn't it obvious that I am?" Kara chuckled while motioning to the luggage by her side.

She couldn't understand why he still did not want to believe her. Trying to gaslight himself not to as if that would solve the fact that she was about to leave him.

She had explained to him how tired she was of him. Of his low paying job and the embarrassing lifestyle they lived.

A week ago, her baby daddy had contacted her and wanting to return to her and their son. Might be true that he abandoned her during her pregnancy but that wasn't for George to judge.

He had accepted her and the pregnancy five years ago when she told him it was his, why bother her with questions now about who truly owned her child when he didn't confirm that from the start.

"Why Kara? Why? Were you unfaithful to me during the course of our courtship or marriage. When did it all go wrong? When did I wrong you?" The uncertainty in his voice was palpable and he couldn't hide his worry and paleness that rocked his voice either.

He could understand her reasons for wanting to return to her ex boyfriend who had returned to the country, richer and looking more responsible than he was before. But being told that Kennedy wasn't his son was where he drew the line on what he was to believe.

She could leave him. He wouldn't mind. He had been left countlessly before, abandoned and discarded, but she shouldn't do so with the boy he had considered his own. She shouldn't do so with the child that made him a father.

Being used as a stand-in for five years didn't ring a bell in his head like the way the news of Kennedy's paternity did, and he hoped against hope for what she had said to be just a joke she was trying to use to get him to sign the divorce papers she dropped on the table for him.

"These are Kennedy's DNA results. And if you read through it, you'll discover that you didn't father him, but my ex boyfriend, whom you know quite well did. There's nothing you can dispute here, Adolph. Kennedy isn't your son. The faster you accept the reality, the better it would be for us all"

Adolph hesitated before he reached out his hand to collect the new documents she was handing over to him. Tears pricked at the corner of his eyes and he found them uncontrollable and unrelenting.

His hands shaked as he tore the covering to shreds, inpatient to go through what it had as a content.

His jaw dropped and his face paled as he read on. One question hit him constantly as he watched the files in his hand with tear drenched eyes and shaky hands from disbelief.

Had she known a day like this would come and stayed with him all these while, pretending to be in symphony with his belief of a perfect lifestyle they lived.

" Daddyyy, why are you crying?" Kennedy asked as he looked up and noticed the tear soaked face of his father's. But no reply came to his question.

"Mommy, why is daddy crying?" He shot the question at his mother, seeing the silence that came from his father to his question.

Curiosity sparked at his innocent eyes and he couldn't tell what was the reason behind his father's tears.

"Let's go,Kennedy. Your daddy is waiting for us" Kara replied the little boy, dragging him along with her as she pulled on the luggage with her second.

" No, you honestly can't be serious. You can't be leaving me, even if you are leaving me, you can't go with Kennedy" Adolph resisted, grabbing at Kara's ankles as his knees buckled beneath him.

Kara tried jerking her leg away from him but his hold on them were too strong. She resorted to hitting his back severally but still,it was nothing and didn't even seem to make Adolph move an inch.

"Please don't leave me, Kara. I'll be miserable without you and our son" Adolph said, his voice softer than it were before as he pleaded with her.

"I don't care what your life becomes! I really don't!! Leave me alone!! You're wasting my time and that of my driver!!!" Kara snapped at him, still struggling to break free from his grip.

"Please don't leave me, Kara" Adolph's voice cracked as he kept on pleading.

By now Kara was getting more impatient with him. Her son stood by her side watching, confused from what was unfolding before him.

"What don't you understand, Adolph? Kennedy isn't your son!" She said with her voice dripping with malice.

" He is my son with my ex boyfriend, and I'm leaving you to go back to him. I'm leaving you to pick the pieces of your shattered life! I'm leaving you to end the deception!! Adolphhh!!!! Just let me go!!!" She screamed at the top of her lungs.

Adolph loosened his grip on her ankles and he watched from the floor he was on as they walked away from him, from hos reach, from his life. And he could do nothing to stop them from leaving.
