Chapter 6 - The Inside of the Rift

The trees shook at the creature's scream, the sound coming from inside the forest.

Because the ground did not allow the production of sound, the young man did not know if the nightmare was fighting or had been killed. The possibility of trying to attract attention was almost zero, since from what Safwane had seen the creatures were very silent.

'Let's see what happens in there...' thought Safwane as he entered the forest.

The constant bubbles exploding in the swamp stopped being heard, silence took over the young man's surroundings again.

But this time the forest was different, the smell of the nightmares' blood was much more intense, Safwane quickened his pace following the smell.

After a few seconds, the young man could notice the presence of a huge nightmare but the blood did not flow, it was dead.

When Safwane reached the nightmare's position, he was puzzled, there was a huge vertical cut on the creature's chest, it had killed it with one blow.

'It's strange...' Safwane thought analyzing the nightmare.

The creature was more than three meters long and the cut started from the collarbone, it could have been by a great jump but the cut was too deep, in addition, the nightmare's arm had been cut off in the process.

The young man after seeing the state of the nightmare left him with three options: it was a fairly tall enlightened one with a powerful physique, the singularity of some enlightened one or the worst scenario, another nightmare.

In addition, the small creatures were not present around to devour the nightmare.

Lost in his thoughts, in a quick movement he placed the katana covering his back.

The metallic sound of the clash resonated through the forest, Safwane had blocked the attack out of pure survival instinct.

'I haven't noticed...' he thought as he tried to look for the nightmare that had attacked him.

Safwane couldn't feel the nightmare's energy, as he searched for another attack that had hit him, which he managed to dodge slightly avoiding being killed, even so the attack had hit him, scraping his arm.

Surprisingly, the young man's clothes that had been torn had absorbed the blood to regenerate.

But Safwane had no time to be impressed.

The creature attacked again, this time aiming for the head, the young man was able to block the attack causing the nightmare to retreat. After being scraped, he could feel how the creature had long blades that acted as arms.

Safwane noticed that just before the attack hit the energy was focused on the creature's blades, making him have to defend himself in a matter of blinking.

The creature's attacks were becoming more constant and faster, it only attacked the vital points seeking to end the life of its opponent in a single attack.

The young man was constantly being overwhelmed, but he learned more and more about the creature and after a few attacks he began to predict the place it was going to attack.

The creature attacked Safwane from behind again, who turned around and grabbed the blade with his hand.

Safwane grimaced in pain.

The young man felt the blade penetrate his skin and before the nightmare could withdraw his arm, it cut it off.

The nightmare surprisingly did not scream for the loss of his arm, it only escaped, but even so the loss was decisive for the battle.

The reason why Safwane could not notice the energy of the nightmare was not because he did not have one, but because it harmonized perfectly with the trees of the forest, making it imperceptible. But now he was missing an arm and the energy had become unbalanced.

This time the young man was the one who attacked, he threw the sheath of his katana towards the nightmare with great force, Safwane used two things to his advantage in this attack: the recent loss of the nightmare forced him to escape from the attack and due to that loss, it would use its left blade to propel itself.

Just as the young man thought, the creature launched itself towards a tree to his left, which Safwane had reached in the time that the nightmare was propelling itself.

The creature could not change direction in the air and before it could use its blade, Safwane had cut off its head.

Both the nightmare and the young man fell to the ground, although of course, the impact did not cause any disturbance in the forest, as if nothing had happened.

Safwane sighed tiredly.

'No wonder that creature died in one blow...' he thought exhausted.

The young man saw the deep wound on his hand, after a few glances he pressed his hand to his chest, hoping that the strange clothing would absorb the blood. Surprisingly, it did work, allowing the skin to regenerate more effectively.

Now that he was done with the disturbing nightmare and his hand had partially recovered, he reluctantly looked at the sheath of his katana, it was stuck in the trunk of a tree high up.

Safwane watched for a few seconds and raised the palm of his hand.

"Come back"

Seconds passed and the only thing that could be heard was the breeze, Safwane somewhat embarrassed began to climb the tree.

'I couldn't at least be able to do this...' he thought disappointedly as he grabbed the trunk.

Finally when he got to where the sheath was, he couldn't help but think that there might be more nightmares that adapted to the environment.

A chill ran down his spine as he pulled out the sheath.

After pulling out the sheath he fell down stepping on the head of the nightmare he had just killed.

'You could get out of the way you know.' he thought as he kicked the head.

Safwane walked back towards the exit of the forest, behind him, the little nightmares appeared again to devour the two huge creatures.

'Am I really doing well by letting them eat?' the young man thought as he walked away.

Safwane again let the little nightmares eat, despite knowing that some could evolve enough to be a threat to his life, laziness won him over again.

The young man walked through the forest again looking for the exit, he could notice how hundreds of nightmares were watching him, but they were not strong enough to dare to attack.

After all, nightmares, like humans, are selfish, they are not going to risk their lives so that others can eat.

Safwane had a quiet but uncomfortable walk through the forest.

'Why is this forest so big?' he asked himself annoyed.

While Safwane was thinking, it finally dawned, the sun's rays weakly penetrated through the branches of the trees, and without any kind of wait, the entire forest began to move.

Hundreds of nightmares moved to hide from the sun's rays, at the same time the ground took on a whitish color. Safwane prepared for a possible attack.

After minutes of constant movement, the forest returned to calm.

"What's wrong with them?" the young man murmured, surprised.

But that doubt would be resolved after taking a step, the ground now creaked, this made it so that the nightmares could not use their stealth to hunt.

'Seriously, what's wrong with this place?' Safwane thought with a nervous smile.

Now that there were no nightmares that could threaten to attack him, the journey was faster.

After a few hours of walking, the sun's rays penetrated further in front of the young man.

Safwane felt relieved after seeing how he was about to leave the forest, but each time he got closer the heat was more powerful.

But the young man did not give importance to leaving here, and when he finally left, the young man took off the blindfold, hoping to see something better.

'Seriously, what's wrong with this place?' he thought disappointed after seeing what he was going to face.

The orange sky which was illuminated by a giant star that seemed to be too close. Safwane found himself on the edge of a cliff again, this time smaller.

The place seemed to be a desert, where there were once again remains of destroyed cities.

Safwane put the blindfold back on, hoping to never see the desert again, and after constantly debating in his mind whether to stay in the forest or move forward, he finally decided to go down the cliff.

The cliff was not only smaller, but it was also curved, allowing the young man to slide through it.

'What do the nightmares specialize in here?' he wondered curiously.

The nightmares of the forest were specialized in the stealth that the forest provided them at night, but the desert was a completely open place, how could they attack?

After touching the ground while thinking about his next challenge, the ground beneath him began to shake.

"Of course..."
