Chereads / Awakened Slayer / Chapter 2 - 1

Chapter 2 - 1

At the age of fourteen, Leonardo had known nothing but hardship. Life in his small, poor village was unforgiving. His father had long passed away in a farming accident, and his mother, bedridden with a mysterious illness, depended on him for every little thing. He was the one who carried wood from the forest, fetched water from the river, and did everything he could to survive. No one in the village cared for him except for his ailing mother.

The village elders often spoke of the dangers of the forest—its dark and untamed nature. They warned the children not to venture too far, especially when the sun began to set. Yet, for Leonardo, the forest had always been his only escape. It was his refuge, where he could be alone, away from the pitying stares of the villagers. Today, as with many days before, he wandered deeper into the woods, seeking to gather enough firewood for the night. His stomach growled from hunger, and the cold bite of winter was starting to creep through the air.

The sun was beginning its descent as Leonardo ventured further than usual. He knew the village would soon be bathed in darkness, and he had to return home before his mother woke up, needing him. But the allure of the forest, the way it seemed to beckon him deeper into its heart, was too strong to resist. With his arms heavy from the bundle of firewood and his thoughts consumed with worry, he trudged onward, unaware of what awaited him.

As the last light of the day began to fade, Leonardo's foot caught on something in the underbrush. He stumbled, but before he could regain his balance, the ground beneath him gave way.

"Ahhh!" he cried out as his body fell through the air. His vision blurred as he fell, and he felt as if the entire world had tilted on its axis. He crashed through layers of moss, vines, and dirt, his body twisting as he plummeted into an abyss below.

A bone-jarring thud echoed as Leonardo hit something solid, knocking the air from his lungs. He groaned in pain, his body aching as he tried to push himself upright. But before he could gather his bearings, a low growl reverberated through the air. It was a guttural, menacing sound, deep and terrifying. His heart skipped a beat.

He looked around, his eyes wide with panic, adjusting to the dim light of bioluminescent moss that lined the cavern walls. He saw something enormous looming before him, its form partly hidden in the shadows. A massive creature, covered in thick, leathery scales, lay sleeping in the center of the cavern. But it wasn't just any beast—it had two heads, each as large as Leonardo's torso, with sharp, jagged fangs gleaming in the faint glow.

Before he could even think of an escape, one of the creature's heads snapped awake, its glowing eyes locking onto Leonardo with a menacing stare. The other head followed, and a low, rumbling growl escaped the beast's throat. Leonardo's pulse raced in fear, and instinctively, he scrambled back, trying to make himself as small as possible. The cavern's walls seemed to close in on him, trapping him in this nightmare.

"No… no… no…" he whispered to himself in panic. He had no weapons, no way of defending himself. He was just a poor, hungry boy who had fallen into a monster's lair.

The creature's jaws opened, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth as the first head lunged toward him. Its breath reeked of decay and death. Leonardo's mind raced. He couldn't die here, not like this. His mother needed him. He needed to survive.

His eyes darted around, desperate for anything that could help. The ground was littered with debris, twigs, and broken branches. In a blur of panic, his hand shot out to grab a large wooden stick, its end jagged and sharp. As the first head lunged toward him, its fangs inches away from his face, he swung the stick with every ounce of strength he had left.

The stick struck the creature's head with a sickening crunch. The impact sent a shock through his arms, and his legs wobbled from the force. But, shockingly, the creature's head slumped. It fell lifeless to the ground, its body twitching in a final, convulsing spasm.

Leonardo stood frozen, his heart thumping in his chest. He couldn't comprehend what had just happened. The creature was dead—or at least incapacitated. The second head reared back, a shriek of pain and fury echoing through the cavern.

Before Leonardo could even react, something strange happened. A heat surged through his body, starting from his chest and flowing outwards, down his arms and into his fingers. His muscles seemed to tighten, and a strange sense of focus overcame him. It was as if he could feel the energy of the forest itself coursing through him.

The second head lunged at him with terrifying speed. But this time, Leonardo's reflexes were different. In a split second, his body moved on its own, sidestepping the beast's attack with inhuman speed. He raised the stick again, and with a precision he had never known, he drove the jagged end straight into the monster's throat.

The creature let out a final, guttural roar as it crumpled to the ground, its body convulsing in death throes. The cavern fell silent except for the faint dripping of water from the stalactites above.

Leonardo stood over the corpse, his breath coming in shallow gasps. His heart still pounded in his chest, but now, there was something else—a strange warmth that pulsed through his veins. His hands trembled, not from fear, but from the power that surged within him. His mind swirled with confusion. What had just happened? How had he done that?

He looked down at the lifeless creature at his feet. His body felt different—stronger, faster, more attuned to the world around him. He felt like something had awakened inside him. Something… primal.
