Chapter 8 - Chapter 8- Captain Rendo

A brief summary from what he deciphered from his memories.

The Battle at Solack commenced six months ago, and their battalion of one thousand and five soldiers was sent in to help the Normal class citizens keep the slaves in check.

This was a situation that had never before occurred until the appearance of a player within the slave's ranks.

He freed the slaves and helped others become Players, and thus, an army of revenge-seeking humans was created.

They had nearly brought the Kingdom of Solack to its knees until the appearance of the Battalion, led by the Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Johnfry Rudge. Someone well-known in history.

For the first few months, they had quelled the rampaging slaves, killed some of their players and even the Glitches they had tamed.

Glitches were a form of creation from the Dark Web, a being similar to the Server, only it serves to cause chaos and destruction to human kinds. A group of them were named Hive.

There was a hierarchy in the Glitches ranking, something of a family of grotesque beings. They were named after the kind of destruction they were capable of unleashing on the world.

It started from Storm, Turbulent, Disaster, Catastrophe and Calamity Classes.

Under each of these classes were rankings, signalling their roles in their hives.

They were divided into Pawns, who served as lookouts and servants; Jacks, who were the knights of the hive, Queens and then the King.

There had been a total of fifteen species of Glitches spotted in the Battlefield, and one of them, a Cord Crab, was the reason for the severe damage to their Barricade.

All things started to go wrong three weeks ago, when the Slave King, as they called him, appeared on the battlefield.

His character speciality was a summoner, and his class was A Glitch Tamer. A rare class amongst many.

It was difficult that they had to deal with powerful players where the soldiers were simply soldiers but luckily, they were countable.

Out of the twenty that led the slaves, five had been killed and fifteen more had been stationed around the battlefield.

He had been tasked with two other squads to secure the western barricade and that was where he began his Test.

'What a mess…our plans aren't working and our defenders are being pulverized. Even without my memories, I would have figured out that there was a spy amongst us…someone that's willing to help even the slaves achieve their goal'.

He paused in his thoughts. 'Freedom'.

That was what the slaves wanted, and fought for. Freedom to choose who they become and how they live their lives. To walk up to the streets without being treated any less of a human.

'....Should I really be on the side of people who are trying to quench that Freedom?' He thought as he sighed.

'one thing the Server didn't mention was whether or not I needed to remain in the Battalion. I can choose to switch sides…But three days is too little to build trust within the Army of the Slaves'.

His brain cracked up a plan, or something at least to help him achieve his missions.

'....I don't want to achieve just one ..but all of them'.

He thought with a sigh as he stopped behind Nurse Abigail, who pulled open a Curtain to reveal Captain Rendo.

With a quick bow, Paxton greeted the old soldier.

The man chuckled lightly and dismissed the nurses who aided his recovery.

"Stand up, Sergeant Paxton". He ordered with a carefree tone.

Paxton obliged, his gaze fixed on the condition of the Captain. His right leg had been amputated and wrapped in a clean sheet of white.

A flash of memory of his chirpy nature crossed his mind, and a heavy burden grew in his heart.

Captain Rendo was one of the three hundred captains sent into the battlefield, but one of the few he stopped to notice.

Well, mostly because he had been assigned under his company.

"What is Paxton? Never seen a war injury before?" He asked with a burst of wild laughter.

His appearance was as carefree as his tone, with side beards and a rough goatee. He had black slick hair that had been worn out from the battlefield, and despite his attitude, he seemed tired.

"Captain…I have something to say". He said with a sigh.

The captain raised his brow. "Continue, boy. What is it?"

"This battle…we can't win it this way".

The Man laughed out loud with a Charing expression in response. "You think your commander isn't aware of this?"

'The battalion Commander, huh?'.

Paxton had a few memories of meeting him in person, and he seemed like someone who wouldn't bend the rules even if it meant victory.

That was someone he couldn't convince. Firstly, with his memories, he decided to find the Spies first, because he couldn't afford to make major decisions with them being around.

"There are spies in our ranks and if they keep being there, we won't be able to achieve anything".

Captain Rendo paused in his expression, his gaze fixed on him for a moment. His brow furrowed as he looked around. "That is not something you say out loud boy"

Paxton nodded. "And that is why I came to you".

Captain Rendo might appear carefree, but he was sharp, extremely, to the point that he was well aware that their plans were being leaked.

"Do you have a plan to catch them?" He asked. "Why else would you bring this to me?"

Paxton nodded in reply. "In fact, I do, sir, but the Battalion Commander would never let a Sergeant take control of his army".

Rendo raised his brow in surprise. "You want to take control of his army? Impressive thoughts for a sergeant, but that is near impossible. What do you wish to do to catch these Spies?

We have been searching for days now, and everyone has come off clean".

From what Paxton could recall, there were vivid army men in their battalion and veterans of war but there was no Advisor, a proper brain tactician to handle things.

'They must have believed in their Battalion commander'. He thought. 'and who wouldn't ... .when his feet are more accountable than all digits in the body'.

"I came up with a bit of a plan, sir; please trust me in this and assist me". He said.

Captain Rendo grunted slightly as he looked away. "I heard Sergeant Cho died"

Memories of the man who jumped in the way of the tentacle that nearly ended his life flashed before his mind, and he groaned slightly in pain.

Sergeant Cho was his closest confidant during the past six months. They had become so close that they were found together at all times, but now he was dead.

"....yes sir" he replied with a heavy sigh.

"The pain of loss sometimes makes us do unpredictable things….if you think you have a solid plan, then I am all ears, but you must let me know of it before I support you".

Paxton smiled and nodded in reply.

'one thing achieved…now if I want to accomplish the second. I would need to be on the battlefield'.

What better way of saving a hundred lives if not for the battlefield? Though, he would have never guessed the kind of plight that awaited him.

"I will go get the map of the battlefield and be back to explain the plan. Please wait here".

Captain Rendo laughed out loud in reply.

"What makes you think I can even leave here?!" he asked, signalling for his amputated right leg.

Paxton smiled awkwardly before walking away. As he did, the light in his eyes disappeared and a cold gaze emanated from his face.

'My first suspect of course, is you, Captain Rendo'.
