Chapter 9 - Stupid? Yes!

Listening to Jemma's question, Vernon felt his throat choke up.

She was right. No one really forced him into this marriage. In fact, if he had not seen how his future would turn out to be, he never had any reason to stop this marriage at all.

But how could he explain his situation to his family members? He can't say that he came from the future, right?

Everyone would look at him like he had gone crazy.

There is no way he would let his image turn into one of a crazy man just like that.

"It wasn't my intention, sister-in-law. I was drunk at that time. I didn't know what I had done at all," Vernon refused to speak the truth.

"You!" Vincent was angered and he pointed his finger at his younger brother once again.

Jemma placed a hand over his arm to calm him down.

Vincent took a deep breath and looked at his parents, "Father, Mother, I think you should go to Helena's parents and talk to them."

"But, what should I say, son? I can't face them right now at all," Father Ford felt ashamed of his son's actions.

Vincent sighed. He turned to look at his younger brother, hoping he would speak up. But he did not. He just lowered his head in guilt.

Vincent couldn't believe his brother at all. When had his obedient and good brother changed so much? Even if he wanted to be rebellious, the time he had selected to do that was a bit too…

He looked at his father and said, "Tell them that the woman and Vernon had nothing to do with each other. She was just lying."

Vernon's head shot up in shock as he looked at his older brother.

So did their father, "What? She was lying? How dare she? But how do you know? Did Vernon tell you something about it before?"

"Let's talk about that later. Anyway, Vernon really had nothing to do with her. So, relax and go speak with the Fords without any guilt," Vincent let his father get rid of guilt first.

When their elder son said those words, both the Jeffery parents trusted him immediately and visibly relaxed.

If he said nothing happened between Vernon and that woman, it meant that nothing really happened between them. They trusted Vincent to such an extent.

With the newfound relief and confidence, the parent walked out of the suite towards the Fords' room.

As soon as the elders were out of the room, Vincent's eyes darkened instantly, and he glared at his younger brother.

"Brother," Vernon lowered his head and mumbled softly in guilt.

"Why did you do that?" Vincent asked.

"What?" Vernon did not understand what his brother meant. He wasn't clear if he was asking about the woman's pregnancy or about his act with the woman. He did not know how much his brother had found out about his plan.

"You are still trying to act?" Vincent was both angry and speechless at the same time.

Jemma pulled Vincent away and faced Vernon, "Vernon, you definitely don't know that woman. Everything was your plan from the start, right? Do you really think we couldn't see that? Do you think we did not see the light exchange between you and Tristan?"

Unlike Vincent, Jemma went straight to the point without any word games. She laid the cards out so they could talk directly instead of playing any sorts of guessing games with each other.

She had always been like that. Direct.

Vernon sighed as he accepted defeat.

He sat down on a chair and used his palms to rub his face in frustration.

Jemma frowned looking at him like that. She knelt in front of him in concern and asked him softly, "Vernon, what exactly is going on? If you have any problems, you could have talked to us, right?"

Her voice was soft, laced with concern for her brother-in-law, whom she had always treated as her own brother.

Vernon looked at her and shook his head, "I am sorry, sister-in-law. I know I worried you and brother a lot. But I am really sorry. I can't tell you anything right now."

Jemma and Vincent frowned. Vincent has been a man of few words since young. Today was the first time he talked so much in front of Vernon.

Now, he did not speak anymore.

It was Jemma who talked to Vernon, "Vernon. What are you…"

"Sister-in-law," Vernon stopped her before she could finish her question, "I really can't tell you anything right now. But one thing is for sure. I don't trust Helena by my side anymore. Even if we are already married, I will divorce her as soon as possible. You, too, please keep your distance away from her for now."

Jemma frowned more listening to his words.

She knew Helena. She was a good woman. She couldn't understand why Vernon was talking about Helena like that.

Since he doesn't want to talk about what had happened, Jemma did not ask about that anymore. Instead, she asked, "So, you planned to stop the wedding using that woman?"

Vernon nodded.

"You are stupid." The voice belonged to Vincent.

Vernon raised his head and blinked his eyes innocently. What had he done now? Why did he become stupid again?

But Vincent did not defend his statement and remained silent.

"..." Vernon was speechless and turned to look at his sister-in-law for help in clarification.

Jemma chuckled looked at the brothers and said, "You really are stupid."

"..." That wasn't what Vernon was asking her, right?

Seeing Vernon's confusion, Jemma stated again, "You are already married."

"..." Vernon was speechless. He had really forgotten about that.

Helena and he had already gotten their marriage certificate a day before their wedding. So, just stopping the wedding wouldn't actually do much. Even if the wedding was stopped, they would still be a legally married couple.

Vernon couldn't help but slap his forehead in defeat. What had he planned so much nonsense for?
