Chapter 23 - Run

City Entry Order?

Jamie looked at Sawyer and Leo to find clues from their expressions. Sawyer was stoic and expressionless as usual. Jamie felt that something truly extraordinary should happen to make him show emotions.

That's why Leo was the best. His big eyes betrayed his feelings. That meant the City Entry Order was something extraordinary. And something that was really vied for by everyone.

But she looked at the girl.

"You can give us those CEOs if you go back to meet your dad. Something tells me you won't go back home."

Jamie asked her. Again, she didn't want these two guys to take a wrong step because of greed.

The girl's expression changed. She looked like she was going to cry.

"Oooo, no, get me out of this place. Please. I'll give you all my pocket money. Please."

Jamie felt bad for this girl. A momentary impulse got her into such big trouble.

"You can come with us. We don't need anything from you."

Sawyer had the final decision out.

Jamie was not surprised by his decision. He was smart enough to choose long-term benefits rather than short-term ones. Leo gave her food.

She made a face but ate it quietly. Well, not a rich brat who didn't know when to stop.

The boy looked at this new girl with curious eyes.

They moved forward after eating. Jamie was sure there would be more people who would like to cheat them. Sawyer estimated this too.

He stopped in a somewhat secluded place.

"Now, we change!"

He handed some bottles to Leo. And Leo first put on makeup for Sawyer. Sawyer looked haggard, bleeding, and injured. Then he put makeup on Leo.

"Come here, Jamie. I'll put on makeup for ya."

Leo smirked.

"You put theirs first. I'll do it."

Sawyer motioned for Jamie to come forward. Well, she accepted her fate.

"Make sure my eyes have a tired look."

Jamie kept telling him pointers. She had seen many tutorials before.

"Your makeup looks good. You can play a guy who was attacked by a succubus!"

"Hm?"

Yeah, did he know about such beings? Wait, what exactly do the novels now talk about?

"Yeah, if you have a haunted look in your eyes, you will look like you just met a grim reaper!"

Sawyer didn't focus on her chattering. He slowly painted blood and a gash on her face.

"My friend loved makeup. She was really awesome at it. She used to do it as a career."

Sawyer focused on her words. He swallowed his questions. Career?

"She couldn't do it later but she used to talk about it. How nice would the world be if there was no apocalypse, right?"

.

Jamie didn't know that she was blabbering at this point. She looked at Sawyer's face close to her and felt like talking also because she was sure that he wasn't listening to her.

But Sawyer carefully listened to her. He even followed her facial expressions and discovered her loneliness and yearning.

"Your life was pretty good in the inner city then!"

Ha, she almost blew her cover. She covered up her gaffe but that didn't mean Sawyer didn't notice. He just chalked it to the fact that her family didn't treat her well. Not in his dreams, not in his reality, he would never think she time-traveled from the past to the current future.

It was a really comical and movie-worthy plot. That's why no one believed it.

And she wasn't going to tell anyone, even if they didn't believe.

"There, it's done!"

Jamie didn't have a mirror now. She did, in her space, but she couldn't take it out in front of all these strangers. She trusted Leo and Sawyer but these new people, she didn't. Even if she did, she wasn't going to tell everyone she knew that she was special.

"You took so much time for one person. I finished everyone else."

Leo looked smug.

"Yeah, you are great."

Sawyer then looked at everyone.

"Now, we all are people who ran away from an obvious attempt of killing. So, act like that. And we have no vines. Because we are going to run without our packages. If you have anything important, keep it close to you."

The people here knew that there was nothing permanent in the competition so they were always ready to lose all their belongings. The girl looked reluctant but she removed her bracelet and tied it as a pendant.

"Ready?"

They all nodded.

They crawled. They limped and they acted so well. Jamie was the one who half-crawled. She knew how to put it on. She had crawled once before when she was attacked. She had crawled her way to the base because she was the one who stayed the last to help everyone else to safety.

Those were some times.

"Where do these beggars come from?"

There was laughter.

But here, Jamie and others, they were so gone in their role that they looked eagerly at the team standing there. The people felt bad after being looked at as if they were some food among starving wolves.

"Oh no no no. Go away. If you don't, I'll kill you."

"Please, please, help us."

Leo cried. Jamie saw his teary face and almost vomited. What was that expression?

"Get out."

They slowly moved forward. Yes, one was gone. More to follow.

They met six teams and they crawled forward in their disgust and taunts. Gotta say Sawyer was a pro at dealing with emotions. This way was somewhat underhanded but hey, it worked.

"Almost done."

The time was ticking.

One hour and two more teams to cross.

Jamie felt invigorated at the thought of sleeping in a bed soon. She never thought she would miss a bed but here she was.

Crossed one more team.

The last one.

"Huh, how did they come here alive?"

They almost froze but Jamie recovered.

"Please help us, master!"

"Get away from me!"

Jamie crawled again. Sawyer picked her up. He was doing this almost all the way. It was like he was carrying her weight and it looked like she was crawling. She had to thank him.

"Wait, why do they look suspicious?"

Run!
