Chapter 24 - Trust me, my theory is true

"Run!"

They were not far from the doorway. They had to go out without getting caught. It was a nice coincidence that this group of people realized the obvious difference later. Even one second can change so much.

There was no one acting now. They all ran, at full speed towards their destination.

"Catch them, they cheated us!"

Jamie turned back and found the guys running after them. Now, they had to run even more fast. Can't get caught. Can't allow anyone of them to get caught.

She looked and found who was lagging. The newcomers weren't as fast as them. It was expected but she had to do something to stop their pursuers.

"Sawyer, throw something!"

He turned back and then threw something. He only twisted himself and then ran. In slow motion, it was damn awesome.

Jamie was going to practice that move. She could impress her team later using this move.

But wait, what did he throw?

She tried to turn back like him and almost fell. Running and turning back at the same time was not easy.

He threw a vine. And the team stopped pursuing them, they were all grabbing for the vine.

Great!

"We are here!"

He halted and then waited till everyone else stepped in the doorway. Jamie was the last one of them.

She thought it was a doorway but it was something out of a game show. Very disturbing actually. Consider this, you run out with your life in your hands, and then enter this death trap, thrilling ride, won't you get a heart attack or at least vomit out everything making yourself sick?

It was that bad.

The ones before her, they yelled. Jamie smirked. She was actually quite familiar with such rides.

After the zombie apocalypse, everything else changed. But the rides, they became more and more attractive to super powers. Maybe because they were thrill seekers or they wanted to just forget about their lives, the rides were really famous.

Moreover, the zombies around the places were also a bonus when you want to let the steam off.

The normal people, like the ones who didn't develop superpowers, were forbidden to go out of the safe zones. She knew that the unawakened were at the bottom of the ladder. The super powers controlled everything about the bases. She could see how the world now was formed little by little.

The slide ride made her reminisce about her past life. It was filled with horrors, she actually didn't miss it. She liked her current life. There were zombies but there was no urgency.

Before, she was living to survive. Now, she could just live, for herself, just after one thing. She had to make sure, some people got their retribution.

The twists and turns didn't affect her much but the others, they were just hoping it would all end soon. Sawyer was clutching his vine, almost suffocating the vine.

"Master, it's okay. I sense the end."

The vine comforted him, all the while looking at the crumpled leaves tearfully.

They all fell down unceremoniously.

"It's done!"

Three of them fainted. Leo was vomiting. Sawyer lookec pale. Jamie was the only one who was in good condition.

She gave them calming medicine. It was something they developed then. Good to see that it was working even now.

Sawyer recovered in a minute.

They all carried one person and walked out.

Jamie found people waiting on the other end.

There was a table with five people.

"You are out. Do you have the vine?"

Sawyer took out one. It was bloody. The people present could see how much trouble they were in before they could get out.

"Good! You passed."

Another one said.

"Keep it here. And take your competition entry pass from here. You pass the trial. The Outer City Inter Guild Competition is next month. Hope you win that too!"

He seemed robotic as if he wasn't interested or as if he had spoken such words more than twice.

"How many teams are out?"

The man looked surprised that someone asked this question.

"Five!"

Oh! They weren't calculated by the Guild One or there was some other reason?

No matter what, Sawyer took them back to the treehouse.

It was empty. The other members weren't out.

"Let's take them to rest. You guys also rest for a while. We will have a team meeting then."

Jamie just cleaned herself. She wanted to change into clean clothes and use some fragrant soap. And then water something delicious.

After a long business trip, haha!

She found some food in the house. Mostly flour. She cooked it the way her mother used to cook. She remembered how she and her brother fought for the next role. Good days.

"You cooked?"

Sawyer came out following the aroma.

"Yeah, this is yours."

Sawyer threw his towel in his office and sat on the table, ready to eat.

"It's good."

"Yeah, I know."

They ate in silence.

"You know, you should not give your gadgets easily to anyone."

Jamie was surprised.

"Why?"

Seeing her way of tilting her head, Sawyer coughed.

"I'm not sure but you haven't noticed some coincidences yet, have you?"

What kind of coincidences?

"What?"

Sawyer was still on the fence. But he finally decided to tell her.

"You gave a battery to Leo, and he got lightning powers. Lighter to me," He took out the lighter, and then a small nail of fire appeared in his other palm," Water gun to that guy, he got water powers!"

"So?"

"Don't you think you are responsible for this?"

"I'm not. You all just awakened your powers. If you want to look at it with a microscope, maybe I just gave a push."

Sawyer shook his head.

"You don't get it, do you?"

Sawyer sighed. He ran his fingers in her still not dry hair and thought of a way to explain.

"Superpowers don't exist here. But your presence gave us three. It's incredible. I can bet, if you give me something now, I can get another power!"
