Chapter 3 - Outer people

Jamie gulped. Why did they look so threatening suddenly?

"I won't," She gave her best innocent smile and Leo became the friendly Leo she knew. Jamie followed them and they walked for a long while. She was hungry. If she could, she would have eaten the bread in her space but how?

She would be suspicious if she did that. She felt that Sawyer was remotely observing her. Why? Weirdo!

"Wait!" He suddenly exclaimed.

Leo took a sudden break and he tilted forward at a crazy angle. Sawyer caught him by his satchel and pulled back.

"Huh, so it's the weird Sawyer Miles. You have a little posse with you."

A stupid voice sounded. Jamie turned and found three guys looking and sneering at them.

"Huh, who is this beauty?"

"Beauty, what's the use of following this waste? Come with me, brother will take you to heaven."

They all laughed. Jokes on them, she could make them go to hell.

"Shut up, Krane!"

"Ooh, the stupid guy can talk."

Another round of laughter.

Sawyer turned away and started to leave.

"Oh no, you can't go. If you die here, your brother will give us twenty thousand gems. Boys, attack."

Sawyer turned back, just in time to kick the incoming guy. He then turned to the other one and hit him in the stomach. Wow, he could fight.

"You are not going to help him?"

She asked Leo.

"No need, no one can win him in a fight. When he came to the Slums, he could barely punch. But in a year, he became the most powerful fighter. He is so awesome."

Leo was Sawyer's fanboy. The fight was proceeding in a good way. As in good for Sawyer. The two guys were bleeding though.

The head of these two guys, Krane probably felt that she was the weak link bere and attacked her.

Sawyer and Leo turned and Jamie was happy to see that they wanted to save her. They were good. She wouldn't mind if they're left her. They didn't need to save her but they did. They were worth making friends, she decided.

But Krane, Jamie hit him with her elbow, turned around, and gave him a kick that sent him flying away.

No guy could be okay after getting a hit from her. She was many things. But she was the easy fighter. The zombie apocalypse makes you pick up skills. And she picked up fighting really well.

"You-"

Jamie rolled her eyes at him. He wasn't her enemy. She wanted to see what Sawyer would do. Would he eliminate the weed?

Sawyer walked towards Krane and said, "Tell my bother, I have no interest in what he assumes is an inheritance. I will never go back. I left the Reilly name. I'm now Sawyer Turner. He knows what that means, right?"

Krane took his two friends and left with abusive words.

"You didn't kill them?"

"I didn't need to. Killing is not that good anyway when they can live to atone for their sins. Only a few deserve instant death."

Sawyer looked away from her after he said this.

Jamie didn't know how someone determined that. Her enemies killed anyone they felt could leak their secret. She knew about this later. She should have been alarmed then. Maybe then her friends wouldn't have died so horribly.

"Besides, killing is forbidden in the Evergreens."

Leo added as an afterthought.

"That doesn't mean it doesn't happen though."

The trio walked forward. Where they were heading, Jamie didn't know but she followed them to see.

"So, Jamie, you don't know anything about the Outer, right?"

What was the Outer?

She nodded.

"You see, the elite and the powerful live in the cities and they have erected the wall to keep us poor out. We live in the Outer area. And we fight to survive. I was born an Outer."

He said with pride.

"Wow! Then how do you get food and all?"

"We exchange. The exchange rate is low, mind you. You see, the cities have management of leaders and they need the zombie crystals and monster animals and plants to function. But they can't go fight, can they?"

Jamie understood that they couldn't.

"So they give us normal food and we give them these things. If they had no use of these products, they would have starved us."

Jamie nodded. He was right. The people at the top would crush those at the bottom.

"Yes, and the Evergreens is a place with guilds. The guild with the most kills is the leader. Now, we are in the competition stage. That's why, we were worried when we saw you. We thought you were some distraction set up by a rival guild."

Okay, so there were so many new rules here.

"How many members are there in your guild?"

Leo put up three fingers.

"Thirty?"

He shook his head.

"Three hundred?"

Now, that was impressive.

"Oh no, we have three members."

Wait, three? Jamie felt bad. Was the idea of following them worth it? She took one look at the tall back of the guy- Sawyer.

Worth it.

"Can I join you then? We will be four."

"That," He looked at Sawyer," We have some strict procedures."

Jamie nodded.

"Yes, yes, what should I do?"

"Boss, how about her? Can we take her in?"

Sawyer was finally willing to talk to her.

"Miss, you are here randomly. If by some chance, I believe you, what will be the guarantee that you won't harm us or out guild? And what about your skills? I cant accept someone who is a waste."

Sawyer talked fast not giving her a chance.

"I hit that guy, didn't you see?"

"Krane is a well known idiot. That doesn't prove anything."

"I can help you. I don't freeze in fights. I saved you from the vine, remember?"

"Even if you didn't, Leo would have awakened his power and saved me."

Jamie didn't think so. She felt that her space had helped Leo some way. She couldn't tell Sawyer that.

"Let's fight, I win, you accept me. You win, I don't join your guild."
