Chapter 7 - The Arrival of House Eltz

From The Imperial Gazetteer of Novgorod

Novgorod, established a mere century ago, stands as a testament to the Empire's focused but relentless expansion. Though young by the standards of the Imperial Core, it has swiftly grown into a significant asset within the colonial hierarchy. Spanning twice the size of Earth, its surface is marked by a delicate balance between burgeoning human industry and the untamed wilderness that still claims much of its vast territories.

The planet's metropolises, rising like islands amidst an ocean of primal landscapes, serve as centers of administration, commerce, and military oversight. These cities, though few in number compared to the heavily populated worlds of the Core, are ambitious in design, with their towering spires reaching skyward as symbols of mankind's resolve to impose order on the cosmos.

Beyond the urban centers lie vast stretches of wilderness, a land neither untouched frontier nor fully tamed dominion. Here, the estates and holdings of Ritters and Barons dot the landscape, their isolated villas and manors embodying the Empire's feudal traditions. These nobles, entrusted with stewardship over Novgorod's burgeoning towns and population, represent the bridge between civilization and the untamed expanse that still resists absolute control.

Some time had passed since the funeral, and the estate of House Vasilier buzzed with activity.

The villa was in a state of chaos. Servants scurried about, dusting off tapestries and marble statues depicting the glory of House Vasilier's lineage.

As Lucius walked through the grand hall, he encountered the house butler, Henrick, who was coordinating the staff. Henrick, a man who had served the Vasilier family since meeting Lucius's grandfather during the war, was the last surviving friend of that generation. Lucius remembered how his grandfather had sponsored Henrick's son to attend the officer academy, a gesture for his friend's years of service

"Henrick," Lucius called out, his voice resonating in the hall, "House Eltz is expected by anytime now. What can you tell me about them?"

Henrick paused, turning to face Lucius, his expression thoughtful. "House Eltz, my lord," he began, his voice calm yet carrying the weight of years of service, "originates from the core sector. Once a powerful and respected noble house, they were led by a baron until a mysterious demotion to Ritter. The reasons behind it remain unclear. Now, all they possess is their genecode and their bloodline. Your father and grandfather saw the potential in them, my lord. It is a wise alliance."

He hesitated for a moment, a flicker of something behind his eyes before continuing, "But I must admit, I thought you'd have known this by now, my lord." His gaze softened. "Then again, with all that's happened, it's understandable."

Henrick shook himself, then gave a small smile. "But, ho! Here they are, my lord," he said, nodding toward the sky.

The conversation was interrupted by the sound of hover-crafts descending, their engines humming with a futuristic sound. Through the window, Lucius saw the emblem of House Eltz, on the craft a Red griffon on the field of white.

His betrothed, Lady Adelheid Von Eltz, was among the last to disembark, her delicate steps and demure gaze reflecting the grace expected of a noble lady. Her presence was quiet and composed. Lucius did find her attractive. She had beautiful long red hair, and a voluptuous body even in her dress.

It was her father, Lord Adalard Von Eltz, who commanded the attention of their group as he emerged first. An older man with greying hair, a broad smile, and a hearty laugh, he appeared like the jovial type. Yet beneath the charm Lucius did notice his eyes gleamed with the pride of a man deeply aware of his station and the significance of the union being forged.

As Lord Adalard descended, his gaze sweeping across the assembled family. "Lord Viktor, Lord Konstantin, it is an honor to stand before the House Vasilier," he said, inclining his head respectfully to Lucius's grandfather and then to Lucius. "And young Lucius. I have heard a lot about you. You will do my daughter Adelheid right won't you hoho"?

Viktor, standing tall, accepted the compliment and returned the greeting with a gracious nod. "Lord Eltz, the honor is ours. House Vasilier welcomes you and your family. Come let us show you inside"

Adalard continued. "And it is good to see a new house like Vasilier with such steadfast traditions. Too often these days, fools get rewarded with some land."

While they walked Konstantin, added, "Speaking of alliances, the Vasilier name, though new, holds promise in the right circles. We've been working to expand our influence here on Novgard, leveraging what we can."

He continued, "It's an interesting world, Novgard. The semi-colonised planets like these are where fortunes can be made or lost in a heartbeat. No doubt, with our alliance, House Eltz will rise up again."

Lord Adalard Eltz nodded, his gaze shifting to the expansive windows that offered a view of both the town lights and the wilderness beyond. He then turned back to Viktor and Konstantin, his expression direct and unyieldingly clear. "Let's be clear. I know this alliance is largely about our genecode. As long as the marriage proceeds, and you help me tap into some of the wealth of these planets, all will be well. Our houses can both benefit from this union."

"We have an understanding," Lord Viktor replied with a big smile.

The formalities continued as Viktor led them through the villa, Adelheid followed silently, while Viktor and Konstantin engaged Lord Adalard in measured conversation, the words of seasoned nobles balancing respect and calculation.

As they moved to the dining hall, the conversation and so did the wine increased.

"Lucius, my boy!" Adalard, somewhat drunk, called out, his tone warm and inviting. "You've been awfully quiet. Come here, come here. I've been talking your grandfather ear off with my tales, but now it's time for you to meet someone far more interesting."

The room grew slightly quieter as Lucius rose and approached. Adalard turned to his daughter, who had been sitting demurely by his side, her hands neatly folded in her lap. "Adelheid, my dear," he said, his voice softening with affection, "allow me to present your future husband."

Adelheid stood gracefully, her movements precise and elegant, as though rehearsed a thousand times. She lowered her gaze respectfully before lifting her ocean blue eyes to meet Lucius's. Her ruby red dress hugged her silhouette, with an understated erotic elegance. Her smile was both nervous and determined.

Lucius bowed slightly, his gaze lingering on her with quiet intensity.

Lady Adelheid was undeniably beautiful. Her long red hair fell smoothly down her back, soft and vibrant. Her blue eyes were striking. Her body was plump and full in all the right places, with curves that filled out her dress perfectly. The gown clung to her, accentuating her shapely hips and she had sizeable breasts. Her long legs were slender and well-proportioned, completing the graceful and undeniable allure she exuded.

"Lady Adelheid, it is an honor to finally meet you," he said, his voice steady despite the weight of the moment.

Adelheid blushed because of the stare and inclined her head, her voice soft but clear. "And I am honored to meet you, Lord Lucius"

Adalard clapped his hands together, momentarily breaking the tension with his usual joviality. However, his expression quickly shifted to one of gravity as he locked eyes with Lucius. "Now, none of this stiff formal talk. You two will have plenty of time to be proper later. But, Lucius," his tone turned stern, "I trust you'll keep my daughter entertained with your charm. Treat her right," he warned with a serious edge before his face lit up again with a laugh, filling the room. The gathered nobles chuckled in response.

The room echoed with agreement as glasses clinked together. Lucius stole a glance at Adelheid, who returned it with a shy but genuine smile.

Adalard leaned in toward Viktor with a conspiratorial grin. "Your grandson seems like a fine young man, Viktor. I dare say Adelheid may have her hands full keeping up with him."

Viktor chuckled, his deep voice resonating. "The young have much to learn from us, but they'll find their way. Let's give them the chance to do so."
