Chereads / Fallen In Apocalypse / Chapter 2 - Upgrading the Camp

Chapter 2 - Upgrading the Camp

The Aftermath

The safehouse was silent except for the faint hum of the protective dome. Rade leaned back against the wall, staring at the shimmering barrier that separated them from the chaos outside. His body still ached from the battle with the rank-A monster, but the sense of urgency in his chest wouldn't let him rest.

Clare sat across from him, her knees drawn to her chest. She hadn't said much since the battle, her expression distant and thoughtful. Rade understood—he felt it too. They had survived, but the fight had exposed just how unprepared they were.

"We need to get stronger," Rade said finally, breaking the silence. His voice was firm, leaving no room for doubt. "That monster was just the beginning. If we don't level up, we won't last long."

Clare nodded, her eyes meeting his. "I know. But... how do we do that? We barely made it through last night."

"We start small," Rade replied, opening the System interface in his mind. A familiar grid of options appeared, each labeled with its Void Token cost. "There are weaker monsters out there—rank-F and rank-E. If we can take them out, we'll get more tokens. And with those, we can upgrade the camp and ourselves."

Clare hesitated, then nodded. "Okay. Just... promise me you'll be careful."

"I will," Rade said, though he wasn't sure if it was a promise he could keep.

The Goblin Horde

The first hint of trouble came as Rade scouted the area around the camp. The streets were eerily quiet, the silence broken only by the occasional distant screech of a monster. He had ventured a few blocks away, his rifle slung over his shoulder and a makeshift blade at his side. The System's interface glowed faintly in his mind, marking potential threats on the map.

Then he saw them.

A group of small, green-skinned creatures was looting a convenience store, their guttural voices filling the air. They were goblins—rank-F monsters, according to the System. They were short and wiry, their sharp teeth bared in malicious grins as they tore through shelves of food and supplies.

Rade crouched behind a burnt-out car, observing them closely. There were six of them, each armed with crude weapons—daggers, clubs, and one with a rusty spear. Individually, they didn't seem like much of a threat, but as a group, they could be dangerous.

The System chimed in his mind, displaying a new notification:

**[Quest Available: Goblin Slayer]**

**Objective:** Eliminate the goblins (6/6 remaining).

**Reward:** 12 Void Tokens, Minor Stat Boost.

**Accept? [Yes] [No]**

Rade didn't hesitate. He selected **Yes** and prepared to strike.

The First Kill

Rade's heart pounded as he crept closer, his blade held tightly in his hand. The goblins were distracted, bickering over a can of food they had ripped open. He used the opportunity to close the distance, keeping his footsteps silent.

The nearest goblin didn't even see him coming. Rade's blade plunged into its back, cutting through its frail body with ease. The creature let out a shriek before collapsing, its body disintegrating into a dark mist. A small, glowing Void Token appeared where it had fallen.

The other goblins froze, their yellow eyes snapping to Rade. For a moment, there was silence. Then, with a collective howl, they charged.

The Fight

Rade ducked as a club swung toward his head, the air whistling past him. He lashed out with his blade, slashing across the chest of the nearest goblin. The creature stumbled back, its blood splattering the pavement.

Another goblin lunged at him with a dagger. Rade sidestepped the attack, grabbing the creature by its arm and slamming it into the ground. Before it could recover, he drove his blade into its chest.

The remaining three goblins circled him warily, their earlier bravado replaced with caution. Rade took the opportunity to grab his rifle, leveling it at the nearest one. He fired, the bullet piercing the goblin's head and dropping it instantly.

The last two goblins hesitated, their confidence shattered. Rade didn't give them a chance to regroup. He charged forward, slashing at one and shooting the other. Within moments, the fight was over.

As the final goblin fell, a notification appeared in his mind:

**[Quest Complete: Goblin Slayer]**

**Reward: 12 Void Tokens, Minor Stat Boost Applied.**

Rade felt a surge of energy course through him as his stats increased. He opened the System interface to check the details:

- Strength: **20**

- Agility: **20**

- Endurance: **20**

- Intelligence: **20**

- Perception: **20**

He clenched his fists, feeling the newfound power in his body. "This is just the beginning," he muttered, collecting the Void Tokens from the fallen goblins.

Upgrading the Camp

Back at the safehouse, Clare greeted him with a mixture of relief and concern. "You're okay," she said, her eyes scanning him for injuries.

"I'm fine," Rade assured her, setting the Void Tokens on the table. "And I brought these back."

He opened the System interface and navigated to the camp upgrades. The first level had given them a 50-meter-square safe zone, but the next upgrade promised to expand the area and strengthen the barrier.

**[Upgrade Camp to Level 2? Cost: 10 Void Tokens]**

**Effect:** Increases camp area to 100 meters square. Enhances barrier strength.

**Confirm? [Yes] [No]**

Rade selected **Yes**, and the Void Tokens disappeared from his inventory. The camp shimmered briefly, the invisible barrier expanding outward. Clare gasped as the space around them grew, giving them more room to move and store supplies.

"This will help," Rade said, inspecting the new perimeter. "We can bring more into the camp now. And the barrier should hold against stronger monsters."

Clare nodded, a small smile breaking through her worry. "You're doing amazing, Rade. I don't know how you're keeping it all together."

"I have to," Rade replied, his expression softening. "For both of us."

Preparing for the Next Battle

With the camp upgraded and his stats increased, Rade felt a renewed sense of purpose. But he knew they couldn't afford to rest for long. The System had already warned him that stronger monsters were coming, and the rank-A beast from the previous night was still out there.

He spent the next few hours organizing their supplies and crafting new weapons. Clare practiced using her healing ability, her hands glowing faintly as she focused on controlling the energy.

"We're getting stronger," she said as she healed a small cut on her hand. "But do you think it'll be enough?"

"It has to be," Rade replied. "And if it's not, we'll find a way to get stronger. We don't have a choice."

Outside the camp, the world was growing darker. The monsters were evolving, their ranks swelling with new threats. But inside the dome, Rade and Clare stood together, ready to face whatever came next.

The apocalypse was far from over, but so were they.

Here's the continuation, expanding Chapter 2 and incorporating the dragon egg discovery, the grind for Void Tokens, and the subsequent challenges.

The Unusual Discovery

Rade's blade slid smoothly through the final goblin, the creature dissolving into a cloud of black mist. As he reached down to pick up the Void Token left behind, something caught his eye in the corner of the room—a faint, glowing light pulsing softly in the shadows.

"What's that?" he muttered, his rifle raised as he cautiously approached.

In the center of the wreckage, nestled among shattered wood and metal, was a smooth, obsidian-black egg. Faint cracks of crimson light coursed across its surface, pulsing rhythmically like a heartbeat. The System's interface activated, displaying a new notification:

[Item Acquired: Dragon Egg]

Description: A dormant dragon embryo. To hatch, provide 100 Void Tokens. Once hatched, the dragon will bond with its owner and grow stronger alongside them.

Warning: Dragon eggs attract high-level monsters. Protect it at all costs.

Rade froze. A dragon? Even in his wildest dreams, he hadn't imagined something like this would fall into his hands. The potential was staggering—a dragon as an ally could turn the tide of the apocalypse in his favor.

But the warning lingered in his mind. The egg would attract monsters, and they were already struggling to survive as it was. Could he risk it?

His thoughts were interrupted by a low growl. Turning, he saw a pack of wolves—rank-E monsters—emerging from the shadows, their eyes fixed on the egg. The System chimed again:

[Quest Available: Protect the Dragon Egg]

Objective: Eliminate the attacking wolves.

Reward: 10 Void Tokens.

Accept? [Yes] [No]

Rade didn't hesitate. He selected Yes and prepared for the fight.

Protecting the Egg

The wolves moved as one, their lean bodies darting forward with terrifying speed. Rade fired his rifle, taking down the lead wolf with a well-placed shot to the head. The others scattered, circling him and searching for an opening.

"Not today," Rade muttered, swinging his blade in a wide arc as one wolf lunged at him. The blade connected, cutting deep into the creature's side. It whimpered before collapsing, its body dissolving into mist.

Another wolf attacked from behind, its teeth snapping inches from his arm. Rade pivoted, driving the butt of his rifle into its skull. The wolf staggered, and a quick follow-up slash finished it off.

The last two wolves hesitated, their snarls quieter now that their pack was reduced. Rade took the opportunity to grab a grenade from his belt, hurling it into their midst. The explosion rocked the room, leaving behind only mist and two glowing Void Tokens.

[Quest Complete: Protect the Dragon Egg]

Reward: 10 Void Tokens

Rade exhaled deeply, the adrenaline leaving him shaky. He picked up the tokens and the egg, cradling the latter carefully.

"This better be worth it," he muttered, making his way back to the camp.

The Grind for Tokens

Over the next two days, Rade threw himself into the hunt. The dragon egg sat safely inside the camp, protected by Clare's watchful eye and the strengthened barrier. Meanwhile, Rade ventured further into the city, targeting rank-E and rank-D monsters for their Void Tokens.

The wolves and goblins were easy enough to handle, their predictable movements allowing him to dispatch them with minimal effort. The bears, however, were a different story.

Rank-D bears were massive creatures, their hulking frames covered in thick, matted fur that was nearly impervious to bullets. Rade quickly learned that aiming for their eyes was the only way to bring them down efficiently.

The fights were brutal. More than once, Rade returned to the camp covered in cuts and bruises, his supplies of medical kits dwindling. But each successful hunt brought him closer to his goal.

Clare's Healing and Progress

While Rade was out fighting, Clare spent her time honing her healing abilities. She had discovered that her powers could extend beyond simple wounds—she could now replenish his stamina and even mend his fractured equipment.

"Try this," Clare said one evening, her hands glowing as she touched Rade's rifle. The cracks in the weapon's frame fused together, leaving it as good as new.

"That's amazing," Rade said, inspecting the rifle. "You're getting stronger too."

Clare smiled, but her expression was tinged with worry. "Just... be careful out there, okay? We're almost at 100 tokens. Don't push yourself too hard."

"I won't," Rade promised, though he knew it was a lie.

The Final Push

By the second evening, Rade had accumulated 98 Void Tokens. He was exhausted, his muscles screaming for rest, but he forced himself to press on. The System marked a rank-D bear nearby, and he decided to make it his last hunt of the day.

The bear was as massive and menacing as the others, its deep growls reverberating through the air. Rade circled it cautiously, waiting for an opening.

The fight was intense, the bear's claws narrowly missing Rade as he dodged and weaved. He fired shot after shot, aiming for its eyes, but the creature's relentless aggression made it hard to land a clean hit.

Finally, with one last desperate swing of his blade, Rade struck the bear's eye. It let out a deafening roar before collapsing, its body dissolving into mist.

Two Void Tokens appeared where it had fallen, bringing Rade's total to 100.

Hatching the Egg

Back at the camp, Rade placed the dragon egg on the table. Clare watched with wide eyes as he accessed the System.

[Hatch Dragon Egg? Cost: 100 Void Tokens]

Warning: Once hatched, the dragon will require regular care and protection. Proceed? [Yes] [No]

Rade selected Yes without hesitation. The Void Tokens vanished, and the egg began to glow brightly. Cracks spread across its surface, the crimson light intensifying until it was almost blinding.

Then, with a soft chirp, the egg shattered.

A small, black-scaled dragon emerged, its eyes glowing a fiery orange. It let out a curious squeak, looking up at Rade with an almost childlike curiosity.

"It's... adorable," Clare said, her voice filled with awe.

The System chimed again:

[Dragon Hatched: Bond Established]

Name Your Dragon.

Rade thought for a moment before replying, "Ignis."

The System accepted the name, displaying new information:

[Ignis (Juvenile Dragon)]

Abilities: Flame Breath (Minor), Enhanced Senses.

Growth Rate: Dependent on care and battle experience.

Ignis climbed onto Rade's shoulder, nuzzling against his neck. Rade couldn't help but smile. For the first time since the apocalypse began, he felt a flicker of hope.

"We've got a long road ahead," he said, stroking Ignis's head. "But with you on our side, I think we can do this."

Clare nodded, her confidence renewed. Together, they would face whatever the apocalypse threw at them—monsters, challenges, and all.
