Chapter 5 - New companions

A Familiar Face

Rade moved through the broken streets, scanning for resources. Every step was calculated; he couldn't afford to be careless. Ignis soared overhead, its sharp eyes scanning the horizon for threats.

As he rounded a corner, he froze. A group of people stood in the ruins of an old school building. They looked ragged, weapons clutched tightly, but something about their leader was familiar.

"Krow?" Rade called, his voice echoing through the quiet.

The leader turned sharply, spear at the ready, but his tense stance melted into shock.

"Rade? Is it really you?"

The two friends approached each other cautiously, disbelief in their expressions.

"Krow, you're alive," Rade said, relief flooding his voice.

"Barely," Krow replied. "What about you? I thought you were dead."

"Not yet," Rade said with a faint smile. His eyes moved to the group behind Krow.

"These are my classmates," Krow explained, gesturing to the four others. "We've been sticking together to survive."

Rade's gaze lingered on each of them. Most looked weary but determined. One, a wiry boy named Victor, stood out. His eyes darted around nervously, his hands twitching near his weapon.

"Come with me," Rade said after a moment. "I have a safe place."

Arrival at the Camp

The camp buzzed with quiet activity when they arrived. Clare, Mina, and Elina were outside, tending to tasks. Ignis perched nearby, its golden scales glinting in the sunlight.

Clare was the first to greet them. "More survivors?" she asked, her kind eyes lighting up.

Rade nodded. "This is Krow, an old friend. He brought some people with him."

Mina approached next, her eyes locking onto Rade with her usual soft admiration. "Welcome," she said, though her attention lingered on Rade.

Elina stayed back, her sharp gaze fixed on Victor.

"This place is... incredible," Krow said, looking around in awe.

"It wasn't easy," Rade admitted.

As the group settled in, Victor's behavior only added to Rade's unease. The boy asked too many questions about the camp's defenses, the system, and even Ignis.

"He's trouble," Elina muttered later that evening as she sharpened her blade.

"I know," Rade replied. "We'll keep an eye on him."

Bonds Tested

The camp was quiet that night, the fire casting flickering shadows on the walls. Rade sat in his house, reviewing his stats.

Strength: 35

Agility: 35

Endurance: 35

Intelligence: 35

Vitality: 35

He'd grown significantly stronger, enough to face a pack of D-rank wolves with ease. But the Demon Cult's threat weighed heavily on him.

Suddenly, a faint creak broke the silence. Rade turned to see Victor standing in the doorway, a pistol aimed at him.

"Victor," Rade said evenly, his hand moving toward the knife on his belt. "What do you think you're doing?"

"You don't deserve this!" Victor spat, his voice trembling. "This camp, this power—it should be mine!"

Rade sighed, his expression unreadable. "Do you even know what you're doing?"

Victor's finger twitched on the trigger, but before he could pull it, Rade moved. In a blur of motion, he disarmed Victor and pinned him to the ground.

The commotion brought the others running. Clare gasped when she saw Victor beneath Rade, while Elina stood ready with her sword.

"He tried to kill me," Rade said, his voice calm but cold.

Victor glared up at him. "You think you're some kind of savior? You're just a kid playing hero!"

Elina stepped forward, her blade gleaming. "We should execute him. He's a threat to all of us."

"No," Rade said firmly. "We're not killers."

They decided to banish Victor, giving him enough supplies to survive but warning him never to return.

A Mysterious Warning

Tensions remained high in the camp after Victor's betrayal. While the others worked, Rade patrolled the outskirts, his mind churning.

Late one evening, his system pinged with a notification.

Incoming Message: Unidentified Sender

Rade frowned and opened it.

"The Demon Cult knows about your camp. They're watching. Be ready."

His jaw tightened. Whether the message was genuine or a ploy, he couldn't ignore it.

He returned to the camp and called a meeting.

"We might have a problem," he began. "This message says the cult knows where we are."

Elina's eyes narrowed. "If it's true, we need to fortify the defenses."

Rade nodded. "I agree. But I also need to find out more about their plans."

Seeking Answers

The next morning, Rade set out with Ignis, leaving the camp under Elina's watchful eye. He carried a map marked with potential cult locations, his destination a nearby factory.

The building loomed in the distance, its windows shattered and walls streaked with grime. Rade moved cautiously through the ruins, every sense on high alert.

Voices echoed down a corridor, drawing him to a group of cultists gathered around a fire.

"We need more subjects," one of them said, his voice gravelly.

"The boss won't be happy if we don't deliver," another replied.

Rade's stomach churned. Their experiments were becoming more frequent.

Ambush

As Rade prepared to strike, Ignis growled softly, alerting him to a cultist creeping up behind him.

"Gotcha," the man sneered, raising a gun.

Rade spun, disarming him with a swift motion and knocking him out. The noise alerted the others, and chaos erupted.

The cultists were armed, but Rade and Ignis were a deadly team. Bullets flew, but Rade dodged and retaliated with precision, his rifle spitting fire.

Ignis unleashed torrents of flame, scattering the cultists. One woman, scarred and wielding twin daggers, proved a challenging foe.

"You're strong," she said, dodging his strikes.

"Not strong enough," Rade replied, landing a decisive blow that sent her sprawling.

Discovery

After the battle, Rade searched the bodies and found a map marked with several locations. One, circled in red, was labeled "Main Laboratory."

"This must be their base of operations," he thought.

He also found a small vial of glowing blue liquid, its eerie light unsettling.

"What are they doing with this?"

Return to the Camp

When Rade returned, he called another meeting.

"They have a main lab," he explained, showing the map. "We need to figure out what they're doing there."

Elina studied the map. "It won't be easy to infiltrate, but it's our best chance."

"We'll prepare," Rade said. "But we need to stay vigilant."

Reflection

That night, Rade sat by the fire, staring at the vial of blue liquid.

"What are they trying to achieve?" he muttered.

Ignis let out a soft rumble, its golden eyes reflecting the flames.

Rade checked his system interface.

Void Tokens: 600

He was still short of the 750 he needed for invisibility, but the ability felt more essential than ever.

"I'll get there," he thought. "And when I do, they won't see me coming."

For now, his focus remained on the battles ahead and the truth buried in the cult's secrets.

The Burden of Leadership

Rade sat in the dim glow of the campfire, reviewing the latest updates from his system. The events of the past few days weighed heavily on him: Victor's betrayal, the growing threat of the Demon Cult, and the new discoveries about their experiments.

His stats had improved significantly, but he knew raw strength wasn't enough to face the challenges ahead.

Strength: 40

Agility: 40

Endurance: 40

Intelligence: 40

Vitality: 40

Ignis sat nearby, its golden scales gleaming in the firelight, and Clare gently stroked its head. Mina was busy tending to the small garden with a quiet hum, while Elina sharpened her blade, her ever-watchful eyes scanning the camp.

Rade's thoughts turned to the vial of glowing blue liquid he had found. It was clear the cult was attempting something unnatural. "What if they're closer to unlocking human evolution than we realize?" The thought made his stomach churn.

A sharp knock on the wooden gate snapped him out of his reverie.

A Stranger at the Gates

Rade approached the gate cautiously, Ignis beside him.

"Who's there?" Rade called.

"It's Krow!" a familiar voice replied.

Rade's eyes widened, and he unlatched the gate. Sure enough, Krow stood there, flanked by a group of survivors—four in total. They looked worn but determined, clutching improvised weapons.

"Rade!" Krow exclaimed, relief flooding his voice. "Thank God you're alive."

"I could say the same about you," Rade said, clasping his hand. "What happened?"

Krow sighed, his expression grim. "We've been on the run for weeks. The cult is everywhere. We barely made it here."

Rade's gaze shifted to the newcomers. Among them were two girls and two boys, each looking more tired than the last. But one, a wiry boy with shifty eyes, immediately put Rade on edge.

"This is Victor, Lena, Miko, and Erin," Krow introduced.

Rade nodded, though his instincts screamed to keep an eye on Victor.

New Arrivals

The newcomers were introduced to the camp, and Clare welcomed them warmly. Mina was slightly more reserved, sticking close to Rade as they settled in. Elina, ever the skeptic, sized them up with a cold, calculating gaze.

"This place is incredible," Lena said, looking around in awe.

"It's taken a lot of work," Rade admitted.

Victor, however, seemed unimpressed. He lingered near Ignis, his eyes narrowing as he examined the dragon.

"That's a dangerous pet you've got," Victor remarked.

Rade didn't respond, his suspicions deepening.

Bonds Tested

That night, as the camp slept, Rade sat in his quarters, reviewing his next moves. He still needed more Void Tokens to afford the invisibility ability, but something about Victor gnawed at him.

A faint creak outside his door drew his attention. He moved silently, opening the door to find Victor standing there, a knife glinting in his hand.

"Victor," Rade said, his voice cold. "What do you think you're doing?"

Victor lunged, but Rade was faster. With a swift motion, he disarmed the boy and pinned him to the wall.

"What's your game?" Rade demanded.

"You don't deserve this!" Victor spat. "This camp, this power—it should be mine!"

The commotion brought the others running. Clare gasped when she saw the scene, while Elina stepped forward, her blade glinting.

"He tried to kill me," Rade explained.

"He's a danger to all of us," Elina said. "We can't let him stay."

Victor glared at her. "You're all fools, following this kid like he's some kind of savior."

"We're not killers," Rade said firmly. "But he can't stay here."

Victor was banished the next morning, given just enough supplies to survive.

A Cryptic Message

Later that day, Rade received a system notification.

Incoming Message: Unidentified Sender

Frowning, he opened it.

"Beware the shadows. The cult knows about your camp and is watching."

Rade's jaw tightened. "It was only a matter of time," he muttered.

He called a meeting with Elina, Krow, and Mina to discuss their next steps.

"If this message is true, we need to strengthen our defenses," Elina said.

"I'll take Ignis and scout the surrounding area," Rade said. "If they're nearby, we'll find them."

Scouting the Enemy

Rade and Ignis left at dawn, moving quickly through the ruins. They followed tracks and signs of recent activity, eventually finding a small cult outpost hidden in a collapsed factory.

From their vantage point, Rade observed the cultists. They were heavily armed, but something else caught his attention—a strange machine surrounded by glowing blue vials, identical to the one he had found earlier.

"What are they doing?" Rade whispered.

Ignis growled softly, sensing danger.

An Unexpected Encounter

As Rade prepared to retreat, a familiar voice stopped him.

"Well, if it isn't the little hero."

Rade spun around to see a scarred woman stepping out of the shadows, flanked by two cultists.

"Who are you?" Rade demanded.

"Call me Seraph," she said with a smirk. "And you've been quite the thorn in our side."

Rade drew his weapon, but Seraph raised a hand.

"Easy now," she said. "I'm not here to fight. Not yet, anyway."

"What do you want?"

"To deliver a message," Seraph said, her smile fading. "The cult is stronger than you think. If you want to survive, stay out of our way."

With that, she disappeared into the shadows, leaving Rade more determined than ever.

Return to the Camp

Back at the camp, Rade shared what he had learned.

"They're experimenting with something," he said. "And they're confident enough to warn me off."

Elina frowned. "They wouldn't warn you unless they were close to a breakthrough."

"Then we need to stop them," Rade said.

His system pinged, and a new notification appeared.

Level Up! Camp Area Expanded to 300m²

It was a small victory, but Rade knew the real battle was yet to come.
