Chapter 15 - Mission Assassination l

The base was alive with quiet activity. Andrei sat cross-legged on the floor, tinkering with a small mechanical device.

It clicked and whirred softly under his nimble fingers, the metallic sounds blending with the faint hum of Kahanna's music playing in the background.

She lounged on the couch nearby, flipping through a weapons catalog while absently munching on snacks.

Victor stood near the reinforced window, sparks flickering at his fingertips as he practiced controlling his power, frustration evident in his clenched jaw.

Jay leaned over the strategy table, his sharp eyes scanning maps and files, mentally piecing together solutions for missions yet to come.

Everything felt routine—calm, even. But the calm shattered like glass when Leno burst into the room.

"Mission briefing!" he barked, his breath coming in short, sharp gasps.

Everyone froze. Leno's composed demeanor was missing, replaced by a rare look of urgency. Jay immediately straightened, his analytical mind switching gears. Andrei's device clattered to the floor, forgotten, while Kahanna perked up, her sharp eyes narrowing in interest.

"What's wrong?" Victor asked, his sparks extinguishing as he turned toward Leno.

Leno took a moment to catch his breath, his usually stoic face shadowed with tension. "We've got a mission," he began, voice steady despite his obvious exertion. "An assassination."

The word hung in the air like a storm cloud.

"Assassination?" Jay echoed, his tone sharp. "Who's the target?"

Leno's eyes met his. "Not just anyone. The President of Veridonia."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Kahanna leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees. "Wait. A president? Are you serious?"

Victor crossed his arms, his brows furrowed. "Why are we targeting a head of state? That's… extreme, even for us."

Leno hesitated for a moment, then continued, his voice low. "The President isn't acting of their own will. Intelligence suggests they're under the control of vampires."

Andrei's head snapped up. "Vampires?" he repeated, his voice tinged with disbelief.

"Not just any vampires," Leno clarified. "A powerful coven. They've tapped into ancient magic to control the President's actions.

Their goal isn't just political—it's destabilization on a global scale. If we don't stop them, the consequences will be catastrophic."

Victor's fists clenched. "And how do we ensure the President survives? Assassination suggests otherwise."

Leno's jaw tightened. "The plan is to neutralize the vampires and break their control over the President. But if the President becomes a direct threat…" His voice trailed off, leaving the implications unsaid.

The team exchanged uneasy glances.

"We're not killing an innocent person," Jay said firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument.

"Agreed," Leno replied. "But this mission won't be easy. The vampires have surrounded the President with layers of defense—both magical and physical. Breaking through will take everything we've got."

Kahanna smirked, her eyes gleaming with excitement. "Sounds like fun."

The team moved under the cover of darkness, their figures blending seamlessly into the shadows of the Veridonian presidential palace.

The air was heavy, charged with an unnatural energy that made the hair on their arms stand on end. The vampires' influence was palpable, warping the very atmosphere.

Reign led the way, his mechanical expertise allowing him to disable the palace's high-tech security systems with ease.

Kahanna covered the rear, her sharp eyes scanning for any threats while her fingers rested lightly on the trigger of her customized pistol.

"Stay close," Victo whispered, his voice barely audible over the muffled sounds of their footsteps.

The team followed behind, Victor's palms crackling softly with restrained energy. The palace was eerily silent, the kind of silence that screamed danger.

As they approached the President's private quarters, the air grew colder, each breath forming faint puffs of mist. The door to the chamber loomed ahead, intricately carved with symbols that seemed to writhe and pulse in the dim light.

Victor raised a hand, signaling the team to stop. He crouched down, studying the symbols. "It's a magical barrier," he murmured. "We need to dispel it before we can enter."

"I'll try to dispel it," Victor said, stepping forward. Sparks danced across his fingertips as he placed his hands on the door. The symbols flared brightly, resisting his energy, but Victor gritted his teeth and pushed harder.

The air around him hummed with power, and finally, the barrier shattered with a deafening crack.

The door swung open, revealing the President's chamber. The sight inside made them freeze.

The President sat on a lavish throne, their eyes glowing an unnatural red. Around them stood a circle of vampires, their figures draped in shadowy cloaks.

They chanted in an ancient tongue, their voices weaving a sinister melody that seemed to reverberate in the very walls.

"Take them down!" Victor commanded, his voice cutting through the tension like a blade.

The room erupted into chaos. Victor unleashed a torrent of lightning, the brilliant arcs illuminating the chamber as they struck the vampires with deadly precision.

Kahanna's shots rang out, each one finding its mark as she moved with practiced efficiency.

Andrei transformed debris into weapons, sending them hurtling toward their enemies with devastating force.

Jay engaged two vampires at once, his movements fluid and calculated. He dodged their attacks with ease, his fists connecting with brutal precision. Leon, ever the silent force, moved like a shadow, his strikes efficient and deadly.

But the vampires were relentless, their magic weaving through the air like living shadows. One of them directed a spell at Victor, a dark tendril of energy that snaked toward him with alarming speed.

Victor raised his hands, summoning a barrier of lightning that shattered the spell mid-air.

The President, still seated on the throne, let out a guttural scream that sent a shockwave through the room. The team staggered, momentarily disoriented.

"We need to break the spell controlling them!" Andrei shouted.

Jay nodded, his mind racing. "Focus on the leader. The others will fall if we take them out!"

Victor channeled his energy, his hands crackling with power as he directed a massive lightning strike toward the lead vampire.

The room shook with the impact, and the vampire let out a piercing shriek before collapsing into ash.

The chanting stopped, and the remaining vampires faltered. The President slumped forward, unconscious but alive.

As the team prepared to leave, Kahanna's sharp voice cut through the relative quiet. "Guys, over here!"

They followed her to a hidden chamber concealed behind the throne. Inside, they found rows of magic users chained to the walls, their energy drained to fuel the vampires' dark rituals. The sight was haunting—their faces pale and gaunt, their eyes hollow.

Victor moved to free a young woman near the front. She looked up at him, her gaze piercing despite her weakened state.

"You…" she whispered, her voice barely audible. "The storm inside you… it's only the beginning. Find the relic."

Victor froze, her cryptic words sending a chill down his spine. "What relic? What do you mean?"

Before she could answer, alarms blared, and the chamber was bathed in a crimson light.

"Move!" Leno shouted.

The team began herding the magic users toward the exit, but as they reached the outer courtyard, the sky above them lit up. A massive beam of energy descended from the heavens, striking the ground with devastating force.

The explosion was blinding. When the light faded, the team found themselves alone. The magic users were gone—obliterated.

Victor stared at the scorched ground, his fists trembling. "No…"

But something else caught their attention. Jay stood a few steps away, his hand clutching the glowing necklace around his neck. Dark energy swirled around him, seeping into his body.

"Jay?" Kahanna called out, her voice tinged with worry.

Jay didn't respond. His eyes were distant, unfocused, as if he were in a trance. The energy pulsed around him before fading, leaving him standing there, visibly shaken.

"What just happened?" Victor demanded, his voice sharp.

Jay looked down at the necklace, his expression one of confusion and unease. "I didn't mean to… It just… happened."

The weight of the moment settled over the team like a suffocating fog. Elena's cryptic warning echoed in Victor's mind, and the storm brewing within him felt more intense than ever.
