Chapter 16 - Meeting About the Truth

The silence in the meeting room was deafening. The team had gathered around the central table, their eyes locked on each other. The intensity of their recent mission still clung to them, an invisible weight hanging over their heads. There was no sound except for the occasional rustle of fabric as someone shifted uncomfortably in their seat.

Victor sat at the edge of the table, his fingers tracing absentmindedly over the smooth surface of his hands, a storm of thoughts raging in his mind. The image of Elena's final words before they had lost everything—before the laser had torn through the room, killing every magic user they had just freed—kept playing on a loop. The cryptic warning, the unsettling calm in her eyes... "The storm inside you... it's only the beginning. Find the relic." He couldn't shake the feeling that those words held a key—perhaps the key to everything.

Jay sat across from him, his eyes glazed over, the burden of their mission weighing heavily on him. He had never expected the aftermath to be like this. The energy he had absorbed from the fallen magic users was still swirling inside him, and he could feel it every moment, like a constant buzz just beneath his skin. He didn't understand what had happened, or why the necklace had reacted the way it did. All he knew was that something inside him had shifted, and he wasn't sure if he could control it.

Leno stood near the window, his usual calm demeanor absent, replaced by a tension in his stance. His eyes, cold and calculating, swept over the room, assessing each member of the team. He had seen many battles, many losses, but something about this—about the unnatural destruction of the magic users—disturbed him deeply. They were dealing with an enemy far more dangerous than anyone had anticipated.

Andrei, leaning back in his chair, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the table, broke the silence. "So, we're just supposed to accept that this mission went wrong? That we can't even save the people we were sent to rescue?"

Jay looked up at him, his expression apologetic. "We did everything we could, Andrei. But we weren't prepared for what happened." His voice faltered slightly as he continued, "And I still don't know why my necklace reacted the way it did. It was like... I didn't even have control over it."

"And that's another thing," Andrei shot back. "That necklace... What the hell is it,? Once that necklace were given to you and every time something strange happens, you get that look in your eyes—like you're not even fully present."

Jay flinched, looking down at the necklace that hung around his neck. He didn't have an answer. He hadn't even wanted to question it before. It had always felt like a part of him. But now, after the mission, it seemed like the very thing that might be controlling him—without him even realizing it.

"Enough," Leno's voice cut through the tension like a blade. He turned from the window, his eyes narrowing at the group. "We're all on edge, and we're not getting anywhere like this. We need to talk about what's happening—not just what happened."

Victor's gaze shifted toward him, his eyes hardening as he spoke. "You're right. But before we do that, I need to ask something. What did Elena mean? The storm inside me... What was she talking about?"

The room fell into a heavy silence once more, everyone unsure how to answer. Andrei shifted in his seat, his face hardening into a frown. "And what about the relic? What is that supposed to mean?"

Victor clenched his fists, sparks of lightning dancing at the tips of his fingers for a moment before he quickly suppressed them. "She said I had to find it. That it's connected to... everything. My past. My abilities. What I am."

Leno crossed his arms, his face betraying no emotion as he processed the information. "The relic," he muttered, more to himself than to anyone in particular. "It could be something ancient. Powerful. Something that links your father's bloodline with whatever else is out there. But we don't have time to investigate that right now."

Jay leaned forward, his voice shaky but determined. "The vampires. Why are they controlling the president? What do they want with him? We don't know enough about them. Are they working with someone else?"

Leno sighed, running a hand through his hair. "The vampires have always had their own agendas. But this? This is different.

This president... he's being controlled by them for a reason. A vampire influence that powerful can manipulate more than just the mind. They can twist a person's very will." His voice lowered, the weight of the words settling in. "This is just the beginning. If we don't stop them now, we may lose more than just one leader. We'll lose control of everything."

"And what happens if we don't stop them?" Andrei's voice was filled with a biting edge. "What's at stake? What else are they planning?"

"They're not just after the president," Leno said gravely. "They're after magic—specifically, the magic that's tied to the bloodline of certain individuals. You... all of you... your powers aren't just random. They're a part of something much larger."

Jay recoiled at the implication. "So this... this necklace of mine is part of something... bigger? Something I wasn't even aware of?" He felt the weight of the words settle in, the implications of what they meant sending a chill through his spine.

Leno nodded, his eyes locking with each of theirs. "Yes. You don't understand it now, but the answers are out there. Somewhere."

"And what about Elena?" Victor asked suddenly. "Before she... died... she told me that I had to find this relic. Do you know where it is? What it is?"

Leno shook his head. "I don't. But we'll find it. Together."

"How?" Andrei's frustration was palpable. "How do we even begin to search for something like that? A relic? A piece of something that could unlock... whatever this storm is inside Victor?"

"We start by getting some answers," Leno replied firmly. "We need to infiltrate their ranks, learn who's pulling the strings. If the vampires are involved, someone's behind all of this. We can't just sit around here and wait for them to come to us."

Kahanna, who had been quiet throughout the conversation, spoke up. "And what happens when we do get answers? What are we supposed to do with them? If the president is just the beginning, what's the endgame?"

Leno looked at her, his expression softening for the first time. "We do what we do best. We fight. We stop them. We find the truth, and we end it."

A tense silence fell over the room. The team knew the stakes were higher than they had ever been. The questions were mounting, but so were the dangers. Victor's mind raced as he thought about Elena's warning. What storm? What relic? And why did he feel like he was caught in the middle of something far bigger than himself?

Suddenly, the stillness of the room was broken by the soft ping of a notification on Leno's phone. His hand shot out and snatched it up, eyes scanning the message quickly. His face tightened, and the room grew heavier with the weight of his silence.

"What is it?" Andrei asked, the tension in his voice evident.

Leno didn't answer immediately. His eyes met Jay's, then Victor's, and then the others in turn. He was trying to make sense of the information, but it was clear that whatever he had just read was unexpected, something he hadn't anticipated.

"Something's happening," Leno said finally, his voice grave. "There's movement at one of our safehouses. They've found us."

The air in the room went still, like the calm before a storm.

Jay felt a cold chill run down his spine, his heart pounding. Probable enemies were coming, and they were closer than anyone had thought.

Before anyone could react, the loud, sharp sound of a blast echoed through the compound. The lights flickered, then went out completely, plunging the room into darkness.

A voice echoed through the intercoms, cold and menacing. "You've made a mistake... It's too late to run now."

And with that, everything went silent.
