Things were going pretty well at school as Kate did not disturb me for good two weeks. I thought maybe it was for the best until she came handling over to me, a birthday invitation card. That was definitely the first time someone would invite me to a party. Judging by my character, I declined immediately. Sure, I would. I would not want to attend a party filled with teenagers and forced to do something I would not like.
"Oh. Come on, it is going to be fun. You are going to meet pretty girls, guys like you and other people. I think it is going to be a very good day for you if you really came. "She said. Well, maybe she did not really know me. Even if I wanted to go to a party, why would I attend my worst enemy's own? Am I crazy? But maybe I was, I really attended, of course it was not voluntary. She came to my house which I still don't know how she figured it out, and gave my sister the invite card. I guess she was lucky enough to have met my sister because she would find all ways to make me attend.
There were several things I detested about parties. Loud noises, body contacts, music, acting like kids and many more did not sound fun to me. Entering a party filled with people was overwhelming. I could not breathe. I believed there was blockage of oxygen as the population had filled the whole space area. I sat down in one empty seat listening to the DJ saying, "so, are you ready?" He said that multiple times. I had to visit the rest room, of course, to puke.
"Excuse me, you have an idea of where the restroom is located?" I asked a stranger.
"Not sure, probably in one of the rooms there." He said. As advised, I began looking for an empty room meant for emergency issues like puking. Well, I did found one but it was not empty. There was a girl standing.
"Not here either." I said. Turning to leave, I heard my name.
"Ewan." I moved closer to see the person. Turns out it was Diane. What would Diane be doing there? Why was she there? Was she invited to the party also? I could not answer those questions all by myself.
"Diane? What..." I said. She pulled me closer.
"Shh. Anyone can hear you. "She replied. Her eyes were soggy like she had cried. But I did not think about it for long, what if she did not cry?
"What are you doing here?" I whispered.
"Let us go to a quiet place first." She replied as she tried to drag me.
"Wait, I need to puke." I ran to the sink and did all I had to do. It was gross but she did not seem to be worried about it. I followed her to a room with nothing in it. That concluded everything.
"Uh oh!" I said.
"Sit." She replied as she sat dragging me also to sit. "You must have heard the news, haven't you?" She asked. Well, I had not heard the news that Kate was her sister and that she lived there.
"No. What news?" I asked.
"Mother is dead. Father seems less concerned. Kate doesn't care. And here I am grounded by my stupid father. "She said. It took me a while to process what she had said. And when I did, it was not good.
"You mean your father killed your mum?" I asked.
"I am not sure, but he is my prime suspect. I tried to report the case to the police, my father stopped me. He also stopped them from performing autopsy on my mother. "She replied. Neither of that surprised me that was something a perpetrator would do.
"But Kate?" I asked.
"She is my step sister. Same father, different mother. But my mother literally raised her. I can't imagine her acting like that despite how much my mother loved her. "I expected tears but none came out of her eyes.
"I expected you to cry." I said.
"I have cried nonstop for two weeks. There is clearly no water in my eyes any more. "She replied.
"Diane, how old is your mother?" I asked out of curiosity.
"Forty two? She will be forty three next Saturday. "She replied. "Why?"
"Was her death painful? Did she die in an excruciating way?" I asked.
"Yes. I was returning from one of my friend's party and I found her body in my room upside down. One of her hands were cut off. She was breathing fervently. "She explained. "I can't explain much because I was a little bit drunk. "She continued.
"I don't think an autopsy is needed, the fact that she was killed is given." I replied.
"Are you trying to cheer me up? Or just saying what you need to say?" She asked. Well, it was the both. In fact, I felt for her. Seeing her mother die in such an excruciating way must had traumatized her. Then, I was sure that Kate was not just bad to me, she was a monster who expected things to go in her way. Nothing annoyed me the most than the fact that she was throwing a birthday party.
Honestly, I knew not what to do. Either I had to console her more or to sneak her out of the party.
"So, what are you going to do now?" I asked praying that her plan would not involve me.
"I don't know. But I would make sure whosoever killed my mother would suffer for it. "She said it like it was nothing. She must have watched a lot of movies, getting revenge is hard. Only the rich gets revenge. Maybe, she did not know that. She sounded pretty confident.
"Okay. Then, how are you going to do that?" Maybe I was wrong. The girl I talked to the most in my entire life was not my sister, it was her, Diane. Strangely enough, I seemed brave enough to talk to her like I would not in the presence of others. Maybe, that was why she told me things.
"I don't know. Do you have any idea?" She asked. The whole matter really did involve me. I was being asked for a plan for revenge. I did not know if I was good at crime related issues.
"No. "I replied frankly. Realistically, some people would say ' not for now ', ' maybe ' or to worsen it all, ' yes'. Those are people that life has really messed them up and they lived their lives planning so hard how to get back on their enemies.
"Oh! Okay. I guess I would not leave here till I die. "She said. I did not know whether she wanted me to sympathize with her or help her. So, I decided to take my leave. Heartless right? Then, what do you expect me to do?
"You are leaving, just like that?" She asked with tears in her eyes. I remembered vividly her telling me she cried for two weeks nonstop, so no tears would come out. I guessed she was wrong.
"Yes." I replied trying to leave again. "You know everything will be fine. I can assure you. "I turned to her to say.
"Fine? My mother did not get to have her own funeral. And you are saying fine?" Alright, maybe I added fuel to water. She burst into tears. I moved closer to her and patted her as well as I could.
"Okay. I know it is bad right now, but I will make sure you get revenge for her. "I finally said. Maybe I should not have said that, but at least, she stopped crying. I was glad that I had said that for that moment.
"So, how am I going to get out of here?" That was it. I had to present a plan. I heard other kids at fifteen had normal lives and get to do what they wanted to do, just like the kids in the party were playing and having fun. But I was a... Well, maybe it was for the best.
