Chereads / Bearer of the Abyss / Chapter 10 - Echoes of the Spire

Chapter 10 - Echoes of the Spire

The descent from the Crimson Spire was eerily quiet. Jisoo and Hana walked side by side, their footsteps echoing in the empty corridors. The oppressive energy of the Spire had diminished, but the Abyss's lingering presence clung to them like a shadow.

Kalix hovered above, his wings flitting nervously. "Master, you've done it. Survived the Spire, faced the Abyssal Heart, and came out breathing. But let's not pretend the world's going to throw you a parade."

Hana glanced at Jisoo, her expression thoughtful. "Kalix is right. Whatever power the Spire gave you, it'll make you a target. The guilds, other adventurers... they'll all want to know what you've become."

Jisoo tightened his grip on the Warden's Eclipse Staff, the faint hum of the Abyssal Heart Fragment in his bag grounding him. "Then we'll deal with them. The Spire was just the first step. If the Abyss chose me, it must be for a reason."

As they exited the Spire, the sight of adventurers and guild members waiting at the base greeted them. The air was thick with curiosity and tension, and hushed whispers rippled through the crowd as they spotted Jisoo's Abyssal Mantle and the title faintly visible above his head.

Scene: Confrontation at the Base

Yuna, the stern-faced leader of a smaller guild, stepped forward, her eyes narrowing as she studied Jisoo. "Han Jisoo, isn't it? The one who walked into the Crimson Spire and actually came back?"

Jisoo nodded. "That's right."

Yuna's gaze flicked to the faint glow of his mantle. "You've gained something in there—something powerful. Care to explain?"

Before Jisoo could respond, a familiar voice cut through the crowd.

"Power like that doesn't belong to just anyone."

Jeong emerged, his silver armor gleaming in the fading sunlight. His expression was a mixture of disdain and curiosity. "The Abyss… it's dangerous. And so is anyone who carries its mark."

Hana stepped in front of Jisoo, her hand on the hilt of her sword. "He's not a threat. If you have a problem, you can take it up with both of us."

Jeong smirked. "I'm not here to fight. Not yet. But know this, Demonologist: the guilds won't ignore what you've become. You'll need to prove you can control that power. Or we'll make sure it's contained."

Jisoo's voice was calm but firm. "The Abyss isn't just destruction. It's balance. If the guilds want to understand it, they can start by not treating it like a threat."

Jeong's smile faded slightly, replaced by a calculating expression. Without another word, he turned and disappeared into the crowd.

The journey back to the adventurer district was uneventful but tense. The streets were quieter than usual, the weight of the Spire's events hanging over the city. Jisoo and Hana stopped by a small tavern, its warm light and soft chatter providing a brief reprieve.

Sitting at a corner table, Hana leaned back in her chair, her eyes scanning the room. "Word's already spreading. You're not just another adventurer anymore, Jisoo. You're someone people will watch, fear, and maybe even follow."

Jisoo nodded, his gaze distant. "The Abyss didn't choose me just for power. It's about something bigger—something the world's forgotten."

Kalix landed on the table, his grin faint. "Big words, master. Let's hope you've got the strength to back them up."

Later that night, back in their apartment, Jisoo placed the Abyssal Heart Fragment on the table. Its faint glow pulsed steadily, resonating with the shard and the mantle.

"The Abyssal Heart… it's a piece of something bigger," Jisoo murmured. "We need to find out what it's leading us toward."

Hana leaned against the wall, her arms crossed. "The Spire was just one dungeon. If the Abyss has left fragments like this in other places, we'll need to track them down."

Kalix's wings twitched. "More dungeons, more danger, more fun. Let's hope the next one's not as temperamental as the Spire."

Jisoo's expression hardened. "Whatever's waiting, we'll face it. The Abyss's truth isn't just power—it's balance. And I'm not stopping until I understand it all."

Hana smiled faintly, her voice steady. "Then let's get ready. The world won't wait for us to catch up."

The following days were a whirlwind of preparation. Jisoo and Hana spent hours honing their skills, upgrading their gear, and gathering intel on the growing number of rifts appearing across the region. The guild boards were plastered with notices of unstable dungeons and breaches, each one more dangerous than the last.

One name kept appearing on the notices: The Rift of Shadows, a newly discovered dungeon that had already claimed several adventuring parties. Its unstable nature made it unpredictable, and the reports described bizarre phenomena—time distortion, gravity shifts, and illusions that left even seasoned adventurers disoriented.

"The Rift of Shadows…" Hana read aloud, her finger tracing the notice. "If the Abyss has a foothold anywhere, it's here."

Jisoo nodded, his gaze fixed on the board. "Then that's where we're going."

Kalix perched on the edge of the board, his grin wide. "You're not wasting any time, master. I like it. Let's dive headfirst into the chaos."

As they left the guild hall, a voice called out to them.

"Heading to the Rift of Shadows, are you?"

Turning, they saw Minho, the enigmatic guild insider, leaning casually against a lamppost. His sharp eyes glinted with amusement as he approached.

"What's it to you?" Hana asked, her tone cautious.

Minho smirked. "Just thought you'd want to know what you're walking into. The Rift of Shadows isn't just dangerous—it's alive. The guilds think it's feeding on the adventurers who enter."

Jisoo's eyes narrowed. "And why are you telling us this?"

Minho shrugged. "Call it professional curiosity. You've survived the Spire, which makes you interesting. If you survive the Rift, you'll be something more."

Hana's hand rested on her sword. "We don't need your help."

Minho chuckled. "Fair enough. Just don't say I didn't warn you."

As Minho disappeared into the crowd, Jisoo exchanged a glance with Hana. "The Rift of Shadows is waiting. Let's make sure we're ready."

The entrance to the Rift of Shadows was a jagged tear in the earth, surrounded by swirling tendrils of black mist. The ground was scorched, the surrounding trees bent unnaturally toward the rift as though drawn to its sinister pull. A faint hum resonated through the air, prickling Jisoo's skin as he approached.

Hana adjusted her grip on her sword, her sharp gaze scanning the area. "The reports didn't exaggerate. This place feels... alive."

Kalix darted forward, his wings buzzing nervously. "Alive and hungry. Master, you'd better be ready. This Rift is going to test everything the Spire taught you—and then some."

Jisoo nodded, his hand steady on the Warden's Eclipse Staff. The faint glow of the Abyssal Heart Fragment in his bag pulsed in rhythm with the Rift's energy, as though responding to its presence. "We're not turning back now. Whatever's in there, it's tied to the Abyss. We need to understand it."

System Notification: "Dungeon Detected: Rift of Shadows." "Level: 10-15. Objective: Stabilize the Rift Core." "Additional Challenge: Resist the Rift's Influence."

The air grew heavier as they stepped through the rift's threshold. The world shifted, and they were plunged into a realm of swirling shadows and fragmented landscapes. The ground beneath their feet was solid one moment, only to ripple like liquid the next. The horizon was a kaleidoscope of twisting colors, and faint whispers echoed from every direction.

"Stay close," Hana said, her voice steady despite the oppressive atmosphere. "This place feels like it's watching us."

Jisoo cast Fear Aura, the oppressive energy creating a faint barrier around them. The whispers dimmed slightly, though they remained a constant presence.

Kalix perched on Jisoo's shoulder, his usually mischievous grin subdued. "Good call, master. This Rift isn't just trying to hurt you. It's trying to get inside your head."

The first challenge appeared as they ventured deeper into the Rift. The path ahead splintered into multiple routes, each one seemingly identical but radiating a different aura. One glowed faintly with a golden light, another with a deep crimson, and the third with a shadowy black mist.

System Notification: "Trial of Choice: Choose the True Path." "Hint: Trust the Abyss."

"Trust the Abyss?" Hana muttered, her brow furrowing. "That's not exactly comforting."

Jisoo knelt, focusing on the fragment in his bag. Its energy pulsed faintly, resonating with the shadowy path. "The Abyss hasn't led us astray so far. I think it's the black path."

Hana hesitated before nodding. "Alright. But stay alert. If it's wrong, we'll need to act fast."

They stepped onto the shadowy path, and the other two routes dissolved into mist. The whispers grew louder, forming incomprehensible words that seemed to brush against their minds. Jisoo tightened his grip on his staff, channeling the shard's energy to steady himself.

System Notification: "Trial of Choice Complete." "Rewards: 500 Experience Points, Rift Stabilizer Fragment (Shadow)."

Hana picked up the fragment, its surface glowing faintly with dark energy. "Another piece of the puzzle. The Rift's core must be protected by more trials like this."

Jisoo nodded, slipping the fragment into his bag. "Then we keep moving. The Rift isn't going to stabilize itself."

As they ventured further, the whispers coalesced into voices—familiar voices. Jisoo froze as he heard his mother's voice, soft and soothing yet tinged with sorrow.

"Jisoo..." the voice called. "Why did you leave me?"

Hana grabbed his arm, her grip firm. "It's the Rift. It's using your memories against you."

Kalix snarled, his golden eyes darting around the chamber. "Don't listen to it, master. It's not real."

Jisoo closed his eyes, centering himself. The shard's energy pulsed, drowning out the voices as he cast Channel Pact. The burst of shadow energy disrupted the illusion, and the whispers faded into silence.

"Thanks," Jisoo said, his voice steady. "The Rift's testing more than just our strength. It wants to break us."

Hana nodded, her expression hard. "Then we don't give it the chance."

System Notification: "Trial of Will: Resist the Phantom Chorus." "Rewards: 700 Experience Points, Rift Stabilizer Fragment (Will)."

The second fragment glowed faintly in Jisoo's hand, its energy merging with the first. The path ahead brightened slightly, the oppressive atmosphere lifting just enough to let them breathe easier.

"Two fragments down," Kalix said. "How many more until we find this Rift Core?"

Jisoo glanced ahead, his resolve firm. "We'll keep going until we find it."
