Chereads / Bearer of the Abyss / Chapter 13 - The Shattered Expanse

Chapter 13 - The Shattered Expanse

The morning light broke through the thin curtains of the apartment, casting long shadows across the scattered maps and notes on the table. Jisoo stood by the window, his gaze distant as he tightened the straps on his gear. The faint hum of the Abyssal Nexus Fragment resonated from his bag, its presence a constant reminder of the path ahead.

Hana approached, her sword strapped securely to her back. "Ready?" she asked, her voice steady but tinged with concern.

Jisoo nodded. "The Shattered Expanse is next. If it's anything like the Rifts we've stabilized before, it'll push us to the edge."

Kalix fluttered onto the windowsill, his grin sharp. "Pushed to the edge? That's where all the fun happens, master. Let's get going before someone else decides to poke around the Expanse and ruins our party."

The Shattered Expanse was a desolate wasteland stretching as far as the eye could see, dotted with jagged, floating fragments of land that hung suspended in mid-air. The sky above was fractured, cracks of radiant light spilling through a twilight canvas that seemed to pulse with unnatural energy.

The group stood at the edge of the first landmass, a glowing rift swirling ominously in the distance. The ground beneath their feet was brittle, crumbling slightly with each step. Bridges of pure light connected the floating islands, their surfaces shifting and flickering as though they could vanish at any moment.

System Notification: "Dungeon Detected: Shattered Expanse." "Level: 14-18. Objective: Retrieve the Fragment of Balance." "Additional Challenge: Traverse the Fractured Pathways Safely."

Kalix let out a low whistle. "Now this is dramatic. Floating land? Unstable bridges? What's next? Flying monsters?"

Hana unsheathed her sword, her eyes scanning the horizon. "Stay focused. The instability here could pull us apart if we're not careful."

Jisoo adjusted his grip on the Warden's Eclipse Staff, his gaze fixed on the rift in the distance. "The Fragment's energy is strong. It's drawing everything here toward chaos."

The first challenge was crossing the light bridges. The group stepped cautiously onto the shimmering paths, their surfaces rippling beneath their feet. As they advanced, the bridges began to shift, their angles tilting sharply and forcing them to adjust their balance.

Hana leapt onto a nearby fragment as the bridge beneath her feet disintegrated. "Move quickly! These things don't hold for long."

Jisoo cast Shadow Bind, creating a network of smoky chains to stabilize the collapsing bridges. Kalix darted ahead, his small form zipping between fragments and calling back instructions. "This way, master! The next platform's bigger—but it's got company."

As they landed on the larger platform, the ground trembled. Shadowy creatures emerged from the cracks, their forms writhing and shifting as if struggling to maintain their shape. Their glowing red eyes locked onto the group, and they charged.

System Notification: "Trial of Form: Defeat the Fragmented Shades."

Hana met the first Shade head-on, her sword flashing in a blur of movement as she parried its attacks. The creature's claws scraped against her blade, sparks flying with each clash.

Jisoo raised his staff, channeling the Abyssal Nexus Fragment's energy. Black flames erupted around him as he cast Channel Pact, the shadowy tendrils lashing out at the Shades and forcing them back.

Kalix hurled fireballs at the remaining creatures, his grin wide. "Not so tough now, are you?"

Despite their efforts, the Shades continued to reform, their fragmented bodies stitching themselves back together as the ambient energy of the Expanse fed them.

"We need to disrupt their connection to the Expanse," Jisoo shouted. "They're drawing power from the Fragment."

Hana nodded, dodging another attack. "Then let's take the fight to the source."

The group pushed forward, fighting their way through waves of Shades until they reached the rift's core. The Fragment of Balance floated at the center of a swirling vortex, its surface radiating a chaotic mix of light and shadow. Tendrils of energy extended from the Fragment, anchoring it to the fractured sky above.

Jisoo raised his staff, his voice steady despite the chaos. "The Fragment is destabilizing everything around it. If we can sever those tendrils, we might be able to stabilize the Expanse."

Kalix flitted closer, his grin sharp. "Sounds easy enough. Just watch out for the vortex trying to eat us alive."

Hana leapt onto a nearby platform, her sword slicing through one of the tendrils. The Fragment pulsed violently, sending a shockwave that nearly knocked her off balance.

Jisoo cast Fear Aura, the oppressive energy creating a buffer against the Fragment's chaotic power. He focused the shard's energy into a concentrated blast, aiming it at the Fragment. The light and shadow around the core twisted and screamed as the energy struck, severing another tendril.

"Almost there," Hana called out, cutting through the final tendril. The Fragment shuddered, its chaotic energy receding as the vortex began to stabilize.

System Notification: "Trial of Form Complete." "Objective Complete: Retrieve the Fragment of Balance." "Rewards: 2,500 Experience Points, Abyssal Balance Fragment, Title: Stabilizer of the Shattered Expanse."

The group stood in silence as the chaos around them subsided. The fractured sky above began to mend, and the floating islands settled into a new, stable configuration. Jisoo retrieved the Abyssal Balance Fragment, its energy calm and steady in his hands.

"Another Rift stabilized," Hana said, sheathing her sword. "But the Abyss's pull is only getting stronger."

Kalix perched on Jisoo's shoulder, his grin wide. "You've got a knack for this, master. But don't get too comfortable. The Abyss isn't done with you yet."

Jisoo slipped the Fragment into his bag, his gaze fixed on the horizon. "Whatever comes next, we'll face it. The Abyss wants us to understand its truth—and I won't stop until we do."

As they left the Shattered Expanse, the faint glow of the Fragment of Balance lit their path, a beacon guiding them toward the next chapter of their journey.

The return journey from the Shattered Expanse was marked by a heavy silence. The Abyssal Balance Fragment pulsed faintly in Jisoo's bag, its energy far calmer than the chaotic fragments they had collected before. Yet the quiet only deepened the tension between the group as they approached the adventurer district.

Kalix, perched on Jisoo's shoulder, finally broke the silence. "So, master, what's next? Another Rift? Another piece of this lovely puzzle? Or maybe a nap?"

Hana, walking ahead, glanced back, her expression sharp. "We need to figure out what's happening with these fragments. If we keep collecting them without understanding their purpose, we're just playing into the Abyss's hands."

Jisoo nodded. "She's right. The Abyss's influence is growing stronger with each Rift we stabilize. We need answers—and fast."

The Iron Fang Guild Hall was alive with activity as usual, but the buzz in the air seemed different this time. The adventurer community was abuzz with rumors of new Rift activity and tales of Jisoo's exploits in the Twilight Chasm and the Shattered Expanse. Heads turned as the trio entered, and hushed whispers filled the room.

Jeong was the first to approach, his silver armor catching the light as he strode over. His smirk was faint but calculating. "Another Rift conquered, I see. You're making a name for yourself, Jisoo."

Hana stepped between them, her hand on the hilt of her sword. "If you've got something to say, Jeong, say it."

He raised his hands in mock surrender. "Relax. I'm just here to observe. But word travels fast. The guilds are paying attention, and not all of them are happy about the Abyss gaining a foothold in someone's hands."

Jisoo's voice was calm but firm. "The Abyss isn't just destruction. It's balance. If the guilds want to stop me, they'll need to understand that first."

Jeong's smirk widened. "Balance, huh? Let's hope you can keep it."

In a private room at the back of the guild hall, Yuna leaned over a table covered in maps and reports. She looked up as Jisoo and Hana entered, her expression unusually serious.

"The Shattered Expanse," she began, tapping a spot on the map. "You stabilized it, but the energy readings didn't fade like they did with the other Rifts. Something's different this time."

Jisoo's brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"

Yuna pushed a report toward him. "The Abyssal Balance Fragment you retrieved is stable, but the Expanse itself is still radiating Abyssal energy. It's as if the Rift wasn't completely sealed."

Kalix tilted his head. "Maybe it's cracked open just a little? Enough to let the Abyss peek through?"

Hana frowned. "If the Rift isn't fully sealed, it could destabilize again. And if it does…"

"The entire region could be at risk," Yuna finished. "We need to find out why the Fragment didn't completely close it."

Jisoo studied the report, his mind racing. "There's more to this than just stabilizing the Rifts. The Abyss is using them for something. We need to understand what before it's too late."

As they exited the meeting room, a figure waited for them in the hallway. It was Minho, the enigmatic adventurer with a knack for gathering information. He leaned casually against the wall, his sharp eyes glinting with amusement.

"You've been busy," Minho said, pushing off the wall and approaching. "Three Rifts stabilized, and the guilds are buzzing about it. But you've caught someone else's attention, too."

Hana's hand hovered near her sword. "What are you talking about?"

Minho's smirk faded slightly. "A group calling themselves the Order of Severance has been sniffing around. They're not fans of the Abyss, and they don't like anyone wielding its power. They see you as a threat, Jisoo."

Jisoo's expression hardened. "What do they want?"

"To stop you," Minho replied. "Permanently. You need to watch your back."

Kalix snorted. "Let them try. Master's survived worse."

Minho raised an eyebrow. "Maybe. But these people are organized, and they're relentless. If you're not careful, they'll come for you when you least expect it."

Jisoo nodded, his voice steady. "Thanks for the warning. But I won't stop. The Abyss isn't just destruction. It's a truth that needs to be understood."

Minho smirked faintly. "Just make sure that truth doesn't destroy you first."

Back at their apartment, the trio poured over the maps and reports Yuna had provided. The next Rift—marked simply as the Obsidian Depths—was showing signs of instability, its energy levels rising at an alarming rate.

"This one's different," Hana said, tracing the map with her finger. "The energy readings are off the charts. If it destabilizes completely, it could create a chain reaction."

Jisoo adjusted the Abyssal fragments in his bag, their combined energy resonating faintly. "Then we'll stabilize it. If the Abyss has more to show us, we'll find out what it is."

Kalix perched on the edge of the table, his grin returning. "And if we run into this Order of Severance? What's the plan then, master?"

Jisoo's expression hardened. "We handle them. The Abyss isn't theirs to control or fear. It's our responsibility now."

Hana placed a hand on his shoulder, her voice firm. "Then let's make sure we're ready. The Obsidian Depths won't wait for us to catch up."

As they prepared for their next journey, the faint hum of the Abyssal fragments echoed through the room, a reminder of the power they carried—and the challenges still waiting ahead.
